They always join the longer queues (Baaaaa!), they don't signal properly on roundabouts, they take ages at ATMs, they block the aisles in supermarkets with their trolleys & wait until they're told the amount due before fondling for their money at the till, they drive in the wrong side of petrol stations, they believe in nonsense such as religion, homeopathy, feng shui, tarot cards, astrology, they cycle with no helmet or visibility aids, they walk their dogs with no leash & don't pick up the sh*t, but they're the people that do the jobs I would never do - so it makes them necessary cogs in the machine, they'll always have a boss to answer to, they make all the obvious & tired jokes & double entendre sex puns, they never have anything interesting to say, the like bad slapstick comedy like Lee Evans & Time Gentlemen Please, etc, etc, etc.

I ponder this quite a bit and I usually conclude that the problem isn't as bad as it would first appear.

The problem arises in that the kind of people you "hate" have a habit of making more themselves more apparent in a general setting (either visually, by their actions or generally aurally). Before long you've got the impression that most people are like this when (I'd like to believe at least) it's not the case.

Just wondering, what qualifications are required in order to transcend the status of "general public"? Do you need to be a celebrity of some sort? If so, surely you aren't holding them up as paragons of virtue?

I sometimes wish I could go about my day in some sort of post-apocalyptic Ireland - Streets eerily empty, the only sound being the squeak of my trolley as I trawl the aisles for freebies. Perhaps, befriend a stray dog for company.

But I think I thrive on the annoyance the public cause me. The inexplicable lack of peripheral vision in many who wander the airport, women reversing a nissan micra out of a space like they're manoeuvering the QEll out of harbour, shop staff who put my change on the counter, not into my outstretched hand etc.

To sum up, I'd miss you all and may I just say, you're all looking wonderful this evening.

Forest Master's post is a reasonably good outline of idiocy in the general public, but what it shows more is that the general public are not necessarily stupid, but unwittingly selfish to their own needs and ignorant to the fact that there are other people around them (often right next to them).

If there's a longish cue where everyone just has a handful of items and there are a number of servers, and a queue with only, say, three people but each of those people has a loaded trolley and just one server, which one would you join?

From working in a shop, it's amazing how people constantly walk by when there are no customers at the counter, but once one or two people walk up, then there's an influx. It's not coincidence either.

Dealing with "the general public" in any sort of capacity will foster an attitude of hatred towards "the general public". Anytime I am in public nowadays, I don't see people. I see immutable objects blocking my path. Get out of my way. Tourists especially.

Another being to compete with for resources(mostly the road). I do not partake in the frivolities of these animals. "Celeb" culture disgusts me to the core of my very being. Why care about these people? "Hi, my <item> isn't working" - Really, how interesting. There are some exceptions, but you won't find these people in typical locations too often.
