The sheer power shown by America to Ireland

Three Galaxy aircraft (Ireland can't afford one of these giants) landed and took off from Dublin today and yesterday. We were also treated to the sight of Chinooks & Blackhawks yesterday....

Do you think that America is to forcefull with it's image? Or that the only Superpower is right to flaunt it's stuff?

    Well, lets just be honest.
America is a super-power. Ireland is not and likely never to be.

And even if its a case of showcasing its military might. Heck everyone likes to show case the goods no matter what it is. How many people like the show off the expensive car.

Perhaps people are too impressed with military hardware which comes from disproportionate military spending.

That's it.....America send this stuff over just to let us little Irish people know that they are the real power and don't think of invading.

    What a load of rubbish.

This is the normal stuff that goes with the President no matter where he goes. Don't think it's done to show off, just their security procedures.

Always amazed how people perceive things and turn them into something it's not.

We dont need it because they have it. If we were under actual threat from neighbours we would hide behind the American skirts.

A few utility helicopters and some transport planes hardly counts as a show of force. America certainly don't do things by half though!

To be fair, Ireland has the power of the United States to the west, and the likes of Germany, France, and Britain to the east. Who would be regarded as a direct threat, or who would actively seek to battle their way through the considerable combined might of the nations mentioned in order to get to Ireland?

Unless you would like Ireland to drastically change its foreign policy and play key roles in Libya, Afghanistan and the likes? It would bring a whole host of security problems to Irish soil that couldn't be negated by a military!

It brings a sense of pride to the people, what ****ing pride is there having a few propeller driven Irish Air Corps aircraft flying over foreign dignataries... the British Queens visit is a perfect example! They should be F16's or something!

It's estimated that the newest American supercarrier will cost 12 billion dollars.

Ten of these would equate to the cost to Ireland of the bank bailout.

Not with the price of fuel what it is. They had to syphon the kero from the central heating at Baldonnel to get those 4 birdies up for the hour.

Sorry but I'd rather have a job than impress the queen with fancy aeroplanes!

Whats the big deal? They need the plane to carry the limos and little chopper (for Moneygall visit that will be cancelled due to the storm on Monday) and back up vehicles. You can't carry them in a Boeing 757. The gunships are just for fun, a day out for some of lads at Mildenhal RAF air base.

I saw a Chinook flying fairly low over Dublin the other day. We get to see all this impressive military hardware without having to spend unfathomable millions on it, which is pretty cool.

F16's, Eh that stuffs nearly 40 years old, I vote we should go for something. This something should be really new and expensive, preferably untried and untested, sit around for most of the time and really be of no actual use to us other than top show off to foreign dignitaries, they could have a chuckle as we borrow money off them to buy planes off them that we have no use for/no intention of using/dont understand how to use. How about we just build a load of really accurate looking mock-ups out of plywood line em up and have a drive past by dignitaries .

Ireland would make a handy staging point for getting into Europe. That's if Italy, Spain or Turkey were decided against for some reason. It would admittedly only really be of use to somewhere like Brazil though, or China if they got really lost on the way.

As has already been pointed out by Rossie1977, you're wrong.

Your post shows that you've probably never heard of economics, because you're ignoring the "elephant in the room" of U.S. government securities in the hands of the Chinese.

People feel pride by watching a few aircraft doing a flyover? Pretty weird if you ask me. I'd much rather have free speech, live in a democracy and watch banged up old planes, than live somewhere like China and watch newfandangled military hardware which the government would have little hesitation in using against civilians should they demand free elections.
During the eighties Pig smuggling along the border with NI was at an all time high costing us billions. If it wasn't for the gardai and the Army putting a stop to it we never would have had the celtic tiger.

Hahahahahahaha, billion dollar pig smuggling! That's hilarious! Not true though (it can't be, can it?)

Do you understand the price of F-16's and the like, this country could not afford them or even come up with a good reason for having them, and national pride does not count. 1 F-16 costs close to 45 million US Dollars, now for a small unit of say 12 that would cost 540 million, then you got to add in the cost of fuel which is massive and also the infrastructure needed for those aircraft

Would they though? It's a nice thought I s'pose, and I think there is an onus on EU countries for common defence, but if the UK decided in the morn that they had enough of reconciliation and wanted the entire 32 counties again, would France or the US or anyone else really intervene militarily against a power as strong as the UK?

wouldn't happen we would be to huge of a cost for the UK there are not enough resources here or a big enough economy for them to make it a positive, plus they would end up dealing with guerrilla warfare all over again and we know what happen in that situation. The EU then might intervene a peace keeping force and next thing is you have something similar to Kosovo where there are to many sides all fighting. Britain knows it would be a mess they couldn't afford, sure at the moment Northern Ireland is costing them more then the territory is making.
