    Great to hear.

I only recently got Saorview up and running on my TV, and have not seen any HD on it yet, so looking forward to how well RTE do it.

You're the first one to mention Champions league, You sure on that? Other thread says the Magners League Final between Munster and Leinster in Thomond Park on the Saturday and the Munster Hurling Championship Quarter Final between Cork and Tipperary on Sunday

Yes, saw the ad as well. Said the rugby and the GAA would be in HD, CL Final not mentioned.

Champions League Final and Magners League Final will both be in HD this Saturday.

Confirmed in an article on the launch of Saorview in next weeks RTÉ Guide (out today).

No mention of the GAA games in HD. Also no indication of HD in the programme listings or the sports review page.

    Email from Saorview

"TWO high definition live sporting events on RTE Two will be broadcast in HD on SAORVIEW:

To mark the launch, on Saturday and Sunday (28th- 29th May), RTÉ Two HD will broadcast the Magners League Final between Munster and Leinster in Thomond Park on the Saturday and the Munster Hurling Championship Quarter Final between Cork and Tipperary on Sunday. "

Email posted by Mickeyboymel on Saturday afternoon. Digital Satellite TV posted similar regarding the Thursday Saorview launch.

I know I'm late to the party but posted that for clarification with mentions earlier of champions league. Good modding skills there Cush :D

I would hazard a guess that rte dont have HD rights to the champions league final yet negotiated...they do have them for magners league and the gaa and are the host broadcaster.

The CL Final is in HD, confirmed in the RTÉ Guide. See my post #7 above.

Most likely the RTE Guide went to print earlier than the email, Tonys information seems correct. Magners League and cork v Tipp, not champions league.

    That's possible of course.

Aren't the matches provided to the broadcasters in HD and then downscaled for transmission?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

That's what I would have thought too. We will see on Saturday I suppose.

Indeed they are . Lets remember this is RTE so anything is possible :D

It might even be the case that they are supplied with a HD feed, but still only have rights to transmit the downscaled SD version.

No, SD feeds are provided to people with SD rights. Which is still a good proportion of rights holders.

I think RTÉ are professional enough not to have left it to the last minute to negotiate HD rights or publish the fact with one week to go if the deal had not been done before going to press. We'll know Saturday evening.

EPG info for Saturday just got added.

It doesn't seem to say if something will be in HD or not (as they do on UK channels).

Anyone know if they'll be doing that in future?

    Sea, sin é an plan.
It is planned that the service will carry a new logo/bug ‘RTÉ 2 HD’ and also a short animation will be played, probably a lower third
super, on handover to the live event.
    ...
In all cases the transmission schedule/running order will contain specific data to indicate the true HD events.

I saw the promo for the GAA matches on RTE 2 this weekend. The Cork Tipperary hurling Match is in HD on the Saorview platform.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,969 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

Saorview promo ad on Morning Ireland this morning. It said "HD hurling, rugby and football this weekend". The football must be the CL Final as no Gaelic football in HD was announced.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,634 ✭✭✭Mayo Exile

Heard that ad too. Yes, I'd say it's the CL final alright, there's no live Gaelic football scheduled for Sunday on RTE2. 2 hurling matches, first at 2pm Dublin v Offaly in the Leinster hurling championship, then the planned HD broadcast, Cork v Tipp in Munster.

one wonders how sky will react to this....hd is their big selling point and lack of rte2hd may on sky for now will be a disincentive to people until they add it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Machinehead

Promo now running on RTÉ TV for Magners League Final, Champions League Final & GAA game all on RTÉ Two HD this weekend.
(Sorry if this has been mentioned already but there are lots of posts in other threads on this subject matter).

No. Sky Sports is their main selling point followed by people not realising what UK TV is available FTA. A high proportion of time the Pay HD channels are actually upscalled SD. Sky1 and Sky Sports (all sports added) are the two top pay channels with less than 2% viewing time each. FTA channels get over 90% viewing time in Ireland and UK.

Sky will add RTE2 HD if they think it's an issue. They will not be in a hurry.

RTÉ should charge them through the bollix for it seeing as Sky have screwed them over on the previous deal and can't be arsed to pay VAT here

Guys, quick question, Ive scanned all digital channels and what I find is RTE 1, RTE2 TV3 TnaG, 3e RTE News now and two test channels, Im using built in tuner on TV, should i be getting a seperate channel for RTE2 HD, or is it only available via the Saorview receivers.

    No, RTÉ2 = RTÉ2HD, so you're fine.

For the majority of the time, RTÉ2 is transmitted in HD resolution but the source material is SD (and upscaled). For the live matches, the source will be HD and you should also see a change in the DOG to indicate such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,969 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

    Just a small correction Apogee

That depends on how you parse what I wrote. ;)

For the majority of the time, RTÉ2 is transmitted in HD resolution but the source material is SD (and upscaled).

Whereas for part of the time, RTÉ is (will be) be transmited in HD resolution but the source material is (will be) HD.

For all of the time the resolution is 1080i, the transmitted material can either be true HD or upscaled SD.

It doesn't correct the error at the beginning of the sentence.

It's not an error. The 'For the majority of the time' qualifier applies to all of the remainder of the sentence, and not to only part of it in isolation as you seem to think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,769 ✭✭✭swoofer

and we dont need a dog to tell us its HD either but RTE love copying sky ie dumbed down

    gb-

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

You'll find that the BBC, ITV and C4 all use DOGs to tell us that the channel is HD. It's not a phenomenon unique to SKY. Although, to be fair, C4 turn off the HD part of the DOG when the programme is just upscaled.

Apogee - I misinterpreted something you posted in another thread. Just accept what 'The Cush' has replied to your post:P
RTE Two are transmitting in HD resolution(1080i) all of the time. Currently, the source material is coming from a tape deck /disk drive in SD resolution and being upscaled. From Saturday, the programme source immediately prior to the encoder will be in full HD for specific events and from SD sources for other events.
I don't know if you've noticed but I have certainly seen that the on-screen graphics being used at certain events - horse racing over Easter for example - has been changed. It has a sharper look to it, flashier transitions, smaller fonts etc. I would guess that this is part of the transition to full HD transmission.

Yes, but the source is not SD all of the time (or at least not when the matches begin).

Bit like fooling an FM radio into believe its receiving a stereo broadcast by inserting a 19khz pilot tone.

Get a grip - the source device is SD all of the time until Saturday:rolleyes:

After that, the debate can start as to how good/bad/indifferent RTE's HD quality is in comparison to BBC/ITV/C4/SKY/etc.etc.:D:D:D
