Our minds were interfered with!

Just washing the dishes there and on came Grace Jone's hit from 1981 'Pull Up To The Bumper'. I remember this song fondly, reminds me of more innocent times spent sucking on Jaw Breakers and pretending I was Hannibal Smith.

So there I was singing along, reminiscing over times long since past, as 80's images of shoulder pads and Funny Feet ice creams went through my mind and then it hit me, just what the fuck I had been singing all those years ago as a child! At birthday parties with other nine year olds!!

"Pull up to my bumper baby,
    In your long black limousine,
Pull up to my bumper baby,
    And drive it in between.

Pull up to it, don't drive through it,
Back it .. up twice, now that .. fits nice,
Grease it, spray it, let me lubricate it..
    "

I'm outraged. Why did the adults let this happen to me? To all of us? I don't know about you lot but I for one will never be the same knowing that, as a nine year old boy, I was singing about large black penises. Only one thing for it, I'm suing Polydor!

Was this an isolated incident!? Or is it what I now expect and there have been other "songs" out there also guilty of the same destruction of young innocent minds? Songs that were delivered into our young trusting hands as just a harmless seven inch, but on reflection, turn out to be anything but! Just remember one thing though, it wasn't your fault. Those adults knew what they had us singing, they had to. Laughing at us I bet.

If you or anyone you know has examples of this, then now is the time to speak up. Was your mind allowed to be used as a vestibule for filth? Were you singing lyrics as a young 'un, that in later years, now have you holding your head in shame at the thought of it? Don't be scared, to share is to care. Be silent no more.

"Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go away and leave you all alone
    I got a bad desire
    I'm on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
    I can take you higher
    I'm on fire

Sometimes it's like someone took a knife baby
edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley
through the middle of my soul

At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
and a freight train running through the
    middle of my head
Only you can cool my desire
    I'm on fire"

    Hope you werent singing this.

    Well here's a couple more...

A song about feminine onanism by all accounts.

And another which appears to concern itself with some sexual thangs

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Chain Reaction written the the Bee Gees and sung by Diana Ross
You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swollow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
    Pleasure made for you, oh
You gotta plan, your future is on the run
Shine a light for the whole world over
You never find your love if you hide away
Crying, dying, all you gotta do is

Get in the middle of a chain reaction
You get a medal when you’re lost in action
I wanna get your love all ready for the sweet sensation
    Instant radiation
You let me hold you for the first explosion
We get a picture of our love in motion
My arms will cover, my lips will smother you
With no more left to say
We talk about love, love, love
    We talk about love
You let me hold you for the first explosion
    Arms will cover you

edit bah beaten to it :)

Lemme take you somewhere you've never been
I can show you things you've never seen
I can make you never wanna fall in love again
Come spend the night inside my sugar walls

    'Little Red Corvette' by Prince:

I guess I shoulda closed my eyes
When you drove me to the place
    Where your horses run free

Cause I felt a little ill
When I saw all the pictures
Of the jockeys that were there before me

    Agadoo:

Ag-a-doo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree
    Aga-doo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee
To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees
Come and dance every night, sing with a hula melody

What can I do to make light of this dull dull day
What switch can I pull to illuminate the way
    Show me one direction
    I will not question again
    For a warm injection
Is all I need to calm the pain

We all need a love resurrection
    Just a little divine intervention
We all need a love resurrection
    Just a little divine intervention

What seed must I sow to replenish this barren land
Teach me to harvest I want you to grow in my hand
Lets be optimistic, lets say that we won't toil in vain
If we pull together we'll never fall apart again

We all need a love resurrection
    Just a little divine intervention

The Beatles could do it too,and get away with it.

    From "Penny Lane":

...a four of fish and finger pie in summer meanwhile back...

Four of fish was fish and chips.
Finger pie was what Liverpool lassies gave Liverpool lads in return.

I suspect Lennon added the line, the scamp.

I'd always assumed this song was about stalking defenseless young women , but it turns out it's about Hobbits or something.

The "warm injection" reminded me of:

"I need a fix 'cause I'm going down
Down to the bits that I left uptown
I need a fix cause I'm going down

Happiness (is a warm gun, momma)
    Bang Bang Shoot Shoot
(When I hold you in my arms)
    Oooooooooh, oh yeah!

And when I feel my finger on your trigger

    Oooooooooh, oh yeah!"

The title is from an advertisement in a US gunshop that particularly amused Lennon.

Speaking of The Who as we were I've always been a bit disturbed about the lyrics of "Substitute"

Bearing in mind the essence of the song is that the "narrator" is a bit second-rate:

"I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth"
"I look pretty young but I'm just backdated"

What are we to make of the lyric:

"I look all white but my dad was black"
    ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭BornToKill

The original stalking song: 'On the street where you live':

Does enchantment pour Out of ev'ry door?
No, it's just on the street where you live!
    And oh! The towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near.
    The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear!
People stop and stare. They don't bother me.
For there's no where else on earth that I would rather be.
Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

I cant sing along to this song anymore without thinking that the guy who wrote these lyrics , didn't have a Lolita complex going on after all it was the er , innocent 60s ....with lines like

''beneath your pigtails and makeup ,your just a baby in disguise ' and though you know that it's wrong to be ...alone with me ...that come on look is in your eyes

Deffo interfered with our minds .....

Young Girl ( Garry Pucket and The Union Gap )

    (chorus )

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
    Better run girl,
    You're much too young girl

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
    You led me to believe
    You're old enough
    To give me Love

And now it hurts to know the truth, Oh,

    Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
    And though you know
That it is wrong to be
    Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes, Oh
    ,

    (chorus )

So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
    Get out of here
    Before I have the time
    To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far, Oh,

Young girl get outta my mind
my love for you is way outta line
better run girl, your much too young girl

Ah nooooooooooooo, not Peter Gabriel too. Were we safe from anyone?

"You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
    This amusement never ends

I want to be your sledgehammer

Why don't you call my name
Oh let me be your sledgehammer

    Show me round your fruitcage

'cos I will be your honey bee
    Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be

    It's what we're doing, doing

    All day and night..
    "

    The Beatles - Come Together

"Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly

He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please

He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football
