Does anyone know when the exam results will be published for first year BESS?

Also, when are the repeats taking place?
    Thanks

I just tried to find the information on the tcd site but it seems to be quite well hidden: The results for my course are out around the 15th June I think, so I'd imagine BESS will be released in and around the same time.

How do we get the exam results?

They'll be up on the department notice boards and online around the same time. The link to the results is on the examinations office website. Results are listed by student number, so everyones are on the same document but are anonymous.

I assumed they'd be out on a Friday, how DARE they contradict my assumption?! :p

15th is aaaaages way, thank god. I can do without knowing for a while!

And how do we get the subject breakdowns?

For Science, I know that the marks for each module are on the page but for the actual breakdown of the marks, you'd have to email the coordinator or the course office. Not entirely sure tbh!

Results about a week and a half after I finish, not too bad...

In maths/TP your breakdown is automatically emailed to you some time after the proper results come out... last year I got it on the 12th of June, so I'm guessing pretty soon after results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭Maybe_Memories

I'm a bit confused. What do we get on the 15th of June so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,082 ✭✭✭Fringe

You're told what grade you get eg I, II.I, fail etc. You'll get your breakdown later at some point. Although this year, they're publishing the results really late at 5 for some reason.

Is the grade you get your average?
Like say you get, for example, a I in almost everthing, but fail one and cant pass by compensation. Are you down as the average or are you failed?

You're down as a fail. If you pass the repeats etc then you are down as a 'clear'.

Following remarks applicable to Maths/TP only.

If you pass, the result you get on publication day is I/II.1/II.2/III, as determined by the ECTS-weighted average.

If you cannot compensate, but achieve an average mark at least 40% the result is 'Not Qualified to Proceed' (NQP). Otherwise F1/F2.

For those who don't pass outright at the annual examination, the published results will list modules to be taken at the supplemental examination.

A numerical breakdown of marks by module is emailed out to @tcd.ie email addresses some days later, after the computations have been re-checked and records updated. Priority is given to breakdowns for 4th year students.

Still no sign of single honours results date? This is getting silly.

They will be realising results on the my.tcd.ie system in the middle of the month - the system isn't ready to go live yet I think.

Some departments are realising results through their own websites and on the examinations website, but this is mostly being done for final years to accomodate for job and postgrad offers.

You will find the dates here when they are ready I think. :)

That's the page I've been checking, I was beginning to wonder if another one had appeared somewhere! Thanks a lot for the info, that helps. I have absolutely no faith in my.tcd.ie so I hope to God our department does the merciful thing, for SS at least... Time to beg :) GRMA!

Our Course Director said results should appear on the afternoon of June 21st on My Tcd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭languagenerd

For first years who don't know, every course gets their results separately, there is no one date. Sophisters often get theirs before Freshman too. Usually by now there would be a document loaded with all the dates and times that the results are published, but obviously they're still hell-bent on using the new system which hasn't bloody worked for anything else this year. Trinity logic

FWIW, I'm SS TSM and we've been given a date. We were originally told that it would be all done on my.tcd., but that the dept were also preparing to put everything up the old way too (with overall results on noticeboards and on the Exams Office website in one big document, and you had to contact the dept for a module breakdown the next day). We got an email a few days ago saying that they're going to do it the old way after all - Sophister TSM results will be on the noticeboard on Monday - but our module breakdown will appear on the portal in July. (Cause that's helpful).

Basically, I think they really want to use the new portal, but, for the fourth time this year, it isn't ready. So some departments and offices have given up and proceeded as normal, and others seem to be hanging on in hope.

WHY DID THEY CHANGE EVERYTHING TO USE A WEB SYSTEM THAT WAS ONLY HALF-BUILT?!!

Thanks for the update, that helps! I wish my dept were as proactive... I'm also an SS and someone said they were going to be provisionally available next Friday but that there were concerns about the new system, etc... arrrgh.

    6pm.

It's only the Sophister ones (JS and SS), mind, the Freshman ones (JF and SF) are out one week later (June 17th at 6pm).

Resits don't cost anything in Trinity.

Anybody know anything about international students results? It would be a mixture of modules, JS and SS. The examinations office says they'll be available on the international page but there's no mention of any result dates up at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭lfqnic

No idea I'm afraid. Things aren't normally this bad, but (as I'm sure you've been hearing all year), everything went wrong with the new system. If I were you I'd email either your department or the international office - all our department has been able to do is tell us when they aim to put them up....

For those of you who got results today, how did it work? Was it on my.tcd.ie, and did it run smoothly, or did you get emailed by your departments?

Brilliant thanks a million! Just asking for a friend who is back in the states but I got mine today and we were told they won't be available on my.tcd until the end of June, early July but I was able to get them the usual way by downloading it as a PDF on the exam results office page! Then the usual 'e-mail your department for breakdown'

In true South Park style "Nothing's changed!!!'

Well it appears that results have been published for a few courses in the form that they were last year.

    http://www.tcd.ie/vpcao/administration/examinations/ug-examination-results.php

Still waiting on mine to be published, a lot of "supposedlys" thrown about as to when that will happen. Pretty bad performance from the exams office to be fair.

They didn't use my.tcd.ie at all. We just went about it as we've always done: at 6pm, they put the list of results on the TSM noticeboards and a few minutes later they were uploaded online on the Exams Office website.

Still don't have the module breakdown, think I can email the department tomorrow to get that. (We've been told the breakdowns will be on my.tcd.ie in July...)

Yeah, same for us. I think the departments are hedging their bets because basically no-one has any faith in the new system and they're waiting to see how things will pan out. But I don't think they'll leave us waiting after the provisional date - it sounds like departments are being fair and using the old way...

At the least, once you get the date, the results should be on the noticeboard (though 6pm on a Friday isn't terribly handy, which is apparently when ours will go up...). Good luck!

Thanks for the info, Languagenerd and PyramidHead! Hope you were happy with the results :)

Can anyone tell me if and how do we get a breakdown of first year science results , (ie the different subjects %). Or do we only get the overall result. Do we have to contact each department separately or will they be posted online. Any takers as it would be helpful to know how the different modules went?

The SF ones are on the noticeboards outside the Science Course Office. The breakdown of modules (i.e. Geology X%, Bio 1 X%) was meant to be processed by my.tcd.ie but obviously that plan fell to pieces, so it's either go into college or wait for an email

Fonts too small for anyone to take photos :/ bit annoying since a lot of people don't plan on being in Dublin or even Ireland again for a while

TSM students have been told that the breakdowns will eveeentually appear on the portal (late June or early July ), so I imagine everyone's will turn up there in the end. I got mine from my department, but just in case you can't get them anywhere, you will see them in a couple weeks anyway. (Because everything in Trinity makes sense like that =/)

Hope everyone who got results today was happy with them :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭lfqnic

We got our results on Fri (yay!) and were told to expect the breakdown on my.tcd.ie 'over the next few days'. Our secretary is hopeful it'll actually work soon, but God knows. If you're out of the country or in a similarly awkward position, I'm sure your department would be happy to email them to you over the next few days if they don't materialise on my.tcd.ie - that was how it was done until this year. Sometimes we had to request them, sometimes they were automatically sent out.

Does anybody know what the story with rounding is? Like if you go 69.5 would they give you a first?

A lot of departments round down. As one Maths tutor said last year "a first is 70%+, not 69.9999%, despite what can be assumed about a limit approaching a finite number"

Hmm that seems pretty harsh to me!

That was just the tutor's view on grading. In general if you're .5% below they won't bring you up. It's the same even for experimental results in TCD, you always round down in the academic world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 164 ✭✭Evan93

Don't know about anyone else but I got rounded up! (was .58 I think). This was the maths/physics department. Although I wasn't on the borderline for a specific grade so I don't know if it's different for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Polka_Dot

Probably depends on the department, I'm in science and got 59.5% overall and it was marked as a II-1.
