Only use facebook though think I have others.

My main reason for using it though is for communication with the friends that i grew up in Botswana with. We're now situated all over the world! Including one who is now in my University the year below me! Something I found out through facebook!
It's great for communication that way and is still my main reason for using it even though I use it to communicate with my home and college friends too

I had a Bebo account (still do probably) and I have a Facebook account, never use them though. Find them boring to use.

I do post on a fair few forums though. I've signed up for Twitter recently, and there seems to be a few interesting people to follow and it was nice keeping up with people's thoughts on current issues. I'm also in a few IRC chatrooms. And I've played a few MMOs and online multiplayer games.

To be honest, I think in generations to come we'll look back at Facebook and think it was an incredibly childish form of "social networking."

Diaspora is something to pay attention to. It's hopefully going to take off as an open source social network, that isn't subject to corporate oversight, and so not a money maker for something, and it gives complete control to the end user.

Is Boards a social network site?
I do not use any other site to post thoughts/opinions except this one.

Resisted facebook until this year. Its a handy way of keeping in touch with people and good when low on credit.

    I use twitter, only.

It's pretty good for news/sports feeds.

I have a few but the only one I ever use is Facebook.

It comes in handy for finding out about events, keeping in touch with family and friends that live far away and remembering people's birthdays.

I have no Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, accounts. Don't think I ever will have.

I get by with emails, and 2 or 3 forums, and thats probably sad enough.:D

Recently decided to start using this social networking malarkey. Started using twitter to follow news and sports sights, topics I find interesting. It really is rather good. And I don't have to read status updates from some cúntbucket who I went to school with.

briefly had a Facebook account but I closed it after a day or so because I thought it was stupid and contrived. I don't have a bebo/ twitter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭LowOdour

Had a facebook account, but closed it off recently because going on to it everyday reading about people telling me **** i dont care about was wearing me down!

Have a twitter account....dont 'network' as such, just follow some funny people on it but dont interact with anyone....i find twitter is really only for media & business people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭xxtattyberxx

Have twitter but its mainly to follow gossip, sports, enterainment etc have never actually 'tweeted'

Have facebook, but am at the stage were it could wasily be deleted, fed up at looking at everyday updates from the same groups of people, who speak to each other every day, even tho they live around the corner from each other, these disfunctional groups irritate me.

Closed down my bebo account ages yonks ago
Bring back the good ole fashioned, calling around for a cuppa, making a phone call etc

I have a Facebook and Twitter accounts but i don't use them for social network mainly just to lurk but i still prefer to meet up with my mates and go for a few drinks!
Same thing goes for internet dating sites as was discussed on another thread but i think this is the was society is moving and maybe the people that don't get with it will be left behind!

I'm a complete addict - however recently stopped posting personal stuff on twitter - it can become very negative and cynical depending on the people you interact with or who follow you. I don't really rate it as more than a good news feed and sometimes entertaining broadcast service now. I've been doing far more stuff IRL recently which is good. I'd give up my phone before Facebook though, simply because how great it is to keep in touch with people.

"A social network is a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes", which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige."

Based on this definition boards.ie and other forums are just as much a form of social networking as twitter etc.

Hence, to even vote in the poll means you do use a social network.

Hence there should only be two options in that poll, "no" cannot be an option.

Given the definition above yes but not twitter, bebo, facebook type sites.

Been on Twitter once or twice for breaking news but I don't have an account or anything. Had a Facebook for about 2 years and deleted it a few months ago and I've never looked back. It got pretty ridiculous how you'd put physical interaction with people secondary to online interaction. Plus, there's things on Facebook you don't want to see, ex's, idiots, retarded status updates, general dribble. It's just all-consuming and it's only when you step back from how much you realise you don't need it. If I need to get in touch with my friends they have my mobile number and vice versa.

    Quit Facebook, feelsgoodman.

My point exactly. Some people consider themselves to be too cool/mature to use social networks sites such as facebook, yet have clocked up 1,000's of posts on boards which is just as much a form of social networking as bebo was.

    Scarleh' for them..

Only reason i use Facebook is for our college department group. Handy updates on it. Use twitter just to follow a few people. Don't see the point in posting every minute detail of my life every few minutes for the world to see.

facebook, mostly to see what friends are at

i have a page on LinkedIn, when i was starting my business my marketing consultant told me to join facebook, twitter, etc, she knew full well that i was absolutely opposed to such energy draining, time wasting sites, seeing as how i see how much time my wife spends on them!

so reluctantly i gave in and joined linkedin thinking it'd be more professional than facebook and so on. bloody hell how wrong i was! i spent so much time cleaning notifications out of my inbox, the whole "connections" like friends idea, people i'd never met in real life wanting to connect, even local tax consultants wanting to "connect", (advertise their business), so i just decided it wasnt working for me, turned off e-mail notifications, and left it there as a static page.

    Boards doesn't count

A social networking site is a thing filled with pictures of 'cool dudes' with surfboards, overexposed pictures of drunkenness, drama, relationships starting but mostly ending, attention seekers posting meaningless drivel about how great their life is but most of all a distinct lack of any useful content which boards.ie does have (outside of AH)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭tfitzgerald

A social network is any medium which allows social interaction between different people.

Boards is a network that allows people to interact with each other socially. Hence, it is a social network and hence you use a social network.
    QED.

Also, how many twitter accounts have "pictures of 'cool dudes' with surfboards, overexposed pictures of drunkenness, drama, relationships starting but mostly ending, attention seekers posting meaningless drivel about how great their life is"

You are obviously referring to Facebook. You need to realise Facebook is only one form of social networking.

Boards.ie has an element of anonymity about it so your not really presenting yourself in the same way as you would to your friends on other social networking sites mind you you probably present yourself in a more honest way on here which is interesting

    QED.

in that case every sh1tty webmail or chat interface is a social networking site

there is a distinct difference between discussion forums and what is commonly referred to as a social networking site

social networking sites also tend to be more segregated, with an emphasis on private profiles and small invite-only groups

People who claim NOT to use social networking sites are full of shit!

The whole notion of "I don't use *insert socialt network name*, I'm cool" is retarded. Why would you not use it? Clearly you have no mates then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭hdowney

i do have a myspace (opened one years ago) but i don't use it anymore. tbh i should go and take the stuff off it i want and close the thing!. same with bebo. bebo was the teenagers social network, and once you hit 18 you were too old for it, well that is my opinion anyway.

i wasn't gonna get a facebook, but a few years ago a friend of mine travelled to austraila and that for a while, so i got one to keep in touch and still have it. use it regularly too.

have a twitter. i do tweet, but not obsessively and not about crap. i mainly follow people. the last time i was tweeting a lot was the general election. so it was on a something topic rather than mindless nonsense.

and obviously i am on boards daily :)

And I found it disturbing seeing some of my male friends playing farmville who are in their late 20's :pac:

Or else you have friends/family you wish to avoid! For some people, the whole f*cked up notion of social networking etiquette would make you look more weird not having some people in your list of buddies than if you just completely abstained. Who wants to view relations/known friends make a complete show of themselves on a daily basis?

Big time burglar too but I'm not saying all this to look cool, I just carefully choose how to waste my spare time and how to stay in contact with people who matter to me.
