What to expect when joining a gym?

Hi everyone! I've never posted here before, so here it goes.

I'm looking to join a gym. I need to shift around 2 stone as I'm becoming more conscious of the health implications of carrying all this extra weight, and I generally don't feel too good about myself.

I've never used a gym before and Im just wondering what to expect really. Is there someone there to work out a fitness plan with you or do you just go ahead and do your own thing? Would a fitness class be more beneficial then joining a gym as they seem more intense and you are less likely not to go? Is there anywhere that you can join to use the swimming pool separate to the gym? I love swimming and it would be my first choice for exercise but so far in every place I've checked, you have to join the gym too. I'm in south Dublin btw.

Also just on diet, another silly question maybe but how have you coped with cutting down on carbs? I know carbs are important but I eat way too many and I struggle to put together a meal that is filling that isn't mainly made up of carbs! Any tips would be great.

Just a few questions any help much appreciated :)

Oops sorry meant to post this in health and fitness mods could you possibly move it? I think I'll get more replies there apologies I don't know how to do it myself.

    Hey Perri,

Most gyms would offer you a free consultation and design a work out program tailormade for you and your needs. They also will bring you round and show you how to do each exercise/use the machines etc.
Alot of the gyms run classes as well which are free(or heavily discounted) when you join.

Get a list of questions together and visit any gyms in your locality which you feel you would want to join. Ask them if they provide the above and make sure it wont be too much of a hassle to get to the gym!!

As for gyms in your area/ swimming pools etc cant help ya there.

    Good luck.
