They should ban trucks from the City Centers

I am sick to the teeth of Truck drivers stopping wherever the f*ck they like and blocking roads for upto 30 minutes.

They should have depots outside the city where they can drop off their load and then have it transported by Van to the Center.

If they can't move it by van (bulky construction equipment) then they should have to get a permit and have a reserved space to drop off items within a timeframe.

While I feel for the Driver, a congested city center is no place for a Rigid or Articulated lorry.

Buses at least have a designated area to stop/park.

    *rant over*
Just this morning I has to wait 15 minutes for some tool that was in an artic, blocked the road into work while he had a fag with another truck driver who was doing the same.

His reasoning was if I could drive up on the footpath I could get around him, thats illegal here, never mind not good for your wheel bearings.

Enough ****ing things are banned in this life already.

What do you suggest they do instead? deliver all the ould clothes and things women love to shop for in a Skoda?

    Let me see....

    Now: truck blocking the road
Op's plan: van blocking the road.

I see a van is smaller than a truck but you will not get rid of the problem by banning trucks. Stores need to be stocked so in stead of 1 big truck blocking a road for a while you ll get 3 vans or more blocking the road to deliver the same amount.

If he is illegally parked take pictures and send them to the pigs

Or even better post them here to allow the high horses get some much needed exercise.

It's no different than any other illegal parking

I'm not too sure Dublin Zoo can do anything on this matter.

You really waited 15 minutes rather than driving on the footpath?

good solution...instead of a truck blocking a street you would have 6 or 10 vans....

and who would pay the extra costs involved? (rhetorical question...)

How about only allowing delivery vans/trucks into the city centre? That way the OP wouldn't be there to be upset.:)

Indeed I did, better to wait than risk damaging your car in some way because of impatience.

I've seen it happen SO many times, especially where the road isnt wide enough for two cars to pass, generally I'll just pull in and let everyone else ram into each other or stationary objects.

Besides, driving on the kerb is illegal.

And yes it is bad for the bearings, your putting a sideways force on them that will increase wear.

I'm not driving on the kerb because some tulip decides to block a public road.

In all fairness if you were "damaging your car" because of overtaking a parked truck, or "ramming into stationary objects" it would be due to inability to operate your vehicle in a satisfactory fashion or lack of observation while driving.

the first link turned out that it was the tyre making the noise, the second link was someone who thought it was the wheel bearing and was going to change it, then never posted again, driving over kerbs will not damage a wheel bearing lol... a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.:pac:

I have come across this many times with all types of vehicles.
    • people taking phonecalls
    • running to the bank machine
    • talking to another car on the opposite side of the road
    • abandon car because nobody they dont give a hoot
The issue at hand here is double/dangerous parking and causing obstruction for other road users to have to take a chance on dangerously overtaking or illigally driving on the footpath.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭shogunpower

id like to see someone ramming into each other because they have to go over a kerb to get around a lorry, it would be hilarious, followed by someone hitting a stationary object, im sure the lorry driver is better at judging widths etc, so when he said go over the kerb there would be no ramming other cars or things etc unless you coouldnt drive your car, illegal it may be, likelyness to end up in court in the real world, none.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 279 ✭✭shogunpower

its well established that wheel bearings will not be affected by going over a kerb, enough to do any damage, so the only reason left not to go around the lorry is that its illegal, the chances of being caught and broght to court are so little its laughable, so basically you made an ass of yourself while the lorry driver laughed at you. you created a problem out of something very avoidable, next time just drive around the lorry and stop holding things up...

Whatever about who is right or wrong, I wouldn't risk it, in the end someone hits into you, you have the hassle of going through their insurance, having a nasty dent/scratch on your car and then the whole she said he said bollocks.

Only yesterday I saw a two trucks on the autobahn that had mashed into each other when one was merging onto the motorway.

Your not supposed to mount the kerb, end of.

Actually if I had posted, mounted kerb to pass truck and drove into hole on the other side that I couldn't see everyone would be saying "You shouldn't mounted the kerb to get past"

Pick one lads, either the safety dave approach or throwing the rules out the window.

Myself I prefer to sit there and wait, at least if your not moving you cant be accused of being in the wrong, or thats the truck drivers thinking anyway.

    Edit:
Its not like its a clear path or anything, theres a tree and a metal bollard on the corner of the kerb.

I think your problem is with the driver not the actual truck. You would probably have the same outcome if a van/car/bus driver had a fag while their vehicle was blocking a road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,208 ✭✭✭keithclancy

Its a wheel bearing, designed to move in one direction. If you put an excessive sideways force on it, it will wear more quickly.

The wear is cumulative, they last much longer if you don't go mounting kerbs, driving into pot holes etc.

Lorry driver wasn't laughing, he was looking a bit sheepish trying to ignore that I was even there.

Eventually he moved because Security said that they had called the Police, in the end he was fined anyway, they took cash from him as he didnt have a German registration.

Security Lads here said I was right not to move, its a 20 euro fine apparently.

Doesn't really matter for my Insurance if anything happens anyway, in Germany your Employers insurance covers you on your travel to and from work.

Safe approach is much better, by going out of your way to get around someone your putting extra risk on yourself because they are doing something they are not supposed to, if it goes wrong you have noone to blame but yourself.

    The driver yes,

But there are roads that trucks simply cannot fit down (like the one he was parked on) or turn around at all and have to reverse all the way back down the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,550 ✭✭✭Slig

Why should the truck be banned from the city centre and not the car, at least the truck had a valid reason to be there?
You could probably have taken a bus, bicycle or tram to get to your final destination. There are many alternatives for you to transport yourself and maybe a case or bag to your destination. The unfortunate truck driver may have up to 26 pallets to get to that particular destination and just because the vehicle is parked doesnt mean that the driver isnt doing anything either. It takes time to unload a lorry, you were lucky you only had to wait half an hour.

Unless you are content to have no shops or businesses in the city centre then there is a much better argument for banning cars than trucks.

The Trucks can't fit down a large percentage of streets and end up blocking them causing the same issue for the Trams/Buses, they can't go anywhere until the police turn up and the road is cleared and then the truck can reverse back out.

I could get the Train, but thats a 3hr 20 minute commute each way. Not Particularly feasible.

Its 1hr 15minutes by car, plus the office has underground parking.

Point being the vehicle is not fit for purpose, the German delivery companies do it, just not suppliers coming from anywhere else, at least the shop should have the facilities to accept delivery.

Lorry carries x, van carries x/10. (rough guess)
I would rather one lorry than ten or twelve vans.

Lorry gets stuck, can't deliver anything, holds up traffic and public transport for an hour until its sorted out.

Generally Truck loads arent all for one destination anyway.

While I accept that some city streets are too narrow for trucks 90% of the time when I get stuck its because of parked cars, and the problem with reversing out is yet again more cars. If an road is unsuitable for trucks there is a weight limit or axle limit or height limit put on it which is signposted at the end of the street. Maybe the fault should be with the planners, allowing large retail into city centres in the first place.

As a side note, how many business to you think could afford a min 200% increase in their delivery costs. taking one vehicle & one driver and replacing them with 4 vehicles and 4 drivers (conservative estimate) will obviously cost substantially more

It's unfair to put it all on just cars.
It's cars, taxis, vans, buses, trucks and, yes, bin lorries.
Was driving up Williams street a few years ago, the whole street was clear (early morning), except for one spot where there was a car parked on either side.
THAT'S where the bin lorry decided to stop, the only spot on the entire street where they could block it completely to anyone else.
They didn't look in a hurry either, I have seen OAP's out for a stroll in the park that where in more of a hurry.
Taxis blocking loading bays, used to drive me crazy. And had I dared park my van in a Taxi rank, there would have been WW3.
People stopping their car in the middle of the road, but it's ok if you're just running in to buy fags and a lottery ticket and, of course, delivery trucks and vans just shutting down whatever street they happen to be in.
Probably because a Taxi had parked in the loading bay.
The company I worked for, we used to swap stories about blocking people who had abandoned their cars in loading bays, park a millimetre away from their bumper and if they where there with a red face and smoke coming out of their ears when we returned 15-20 minutes later: BONUS!

Sorry about ressurecting an old thread but I'm just back from work.
There are way more "double deck" trailers now because of diesel prices and hauliers looking to transport the most goods for the least cost and its not just international haulage firms using them either. Tesco has just put in several new double deck loading bays into their warehouse and bought several more trailers so they WILL be in a city centre near you soon.

Dont get me wrong my life would be a whole load less stressful if I didnt have to go into city centres with an artic but as a van will only take max 2 pallets and a standard 13.3m artic can easily take 26 I dont think my employer will be changing his delivery method any time soon.

while true Tesco Ireland still buy / lease their own trailers. What you see on Irish roads (for Tesco) is Stobart units with a) Tesco Ireland normal trailers, b) Tesco Ireland DD, c) Tesco UK trailers, d) Tesco UK DD or e) Stobart trailers doing work for Tesco

    c) and d) should generally only be ports to Depot.

I doubt it, they'd be busier and nicer overall. Pedestrian space could be increased in a lot of places, public transport would work much better without car clogging up the place. more people would cycle as it would be seen as safer.

Thats what office buildings have underground car parks for.

Although it would not be feasible to have everyone come to the city by public transport, the cost of accomodation on public transport lines close to the city would shoot up.

There are only one or two of the old tesco trailers left(blue with tesco written in big darker blue letters on the side). Mostly all new Eddie Stobart trailers now with a few older white DD trailers and some rigids for the small stores. They even got rid of the 10M tesco trailers with the steering axles for new ES ones. I'm noticing a fair few new navy DD trailers around now though. Many of the bigger stores get their deliveries in DD trailers especially the further away ones such as Letterkenny as it saves using 2 trucks, drivers and trailers.

I know that Sligo experimented with closing off the city centre to all traffic several years ago and then spent a fortune last Christmas opening it up again. Even doing deliveries at night to avoid causing traffic disruption isnt an option because of the noise of the trucks and fridges wakes up local residents.

And suppose the 15 minutes of wasted lifetime gave him plenty of time to twitter all his black and white types about how there was a fag with a tool in his mouth tool with a fag in his mouth in front of him and there was no way he was getting up on the kerb for a little tool like that :D

the whole "wheel bearing" spiel was just an excuse to be obnoxious.
Bit like sitting in the overtaking lane at 119.125 km/h and saying "Ah sure but I'm going the speed limit".

Ok ok I see what the problem is here Op - you've spent too much time in Germany. Don't believe me - here is the test:
Its 4am in the morning on walk home from night out. You come to traffic lights. Lights are red for pedestrians. You can see clearly for a miel each direction and there are no signs of any cars anywhere. Do you:
    a) Wait for green man ?
    b) Cross the road immediately of course.

If your instinctive answer is a) you've been in Germany too long

    Hahaha!
Not only am I German, not only have I used that exact argument many times before, but also it is absolutely true!
Because there is always a Nosy Nora looking at that traffic light from behind the curtains, ready to call the Polizei should anyone dare break the law at 4am.
It's part of the reason why I'm in Ireland.
The problem is it has made me a torn man.
One the one side I believe that rules and regulations are there for a reason and you should of course obey them and who the hell are you for thinking the rules don't apply to you?
And on the other side I think "what the hell, those rules where only invented by busy bodies and desk jockeys who never come down from their Ivory Tower long enough to have any clue about what's going on.
I guess it's the struggle within us all that cannot be resolved other than through flame wars on the internet.
On the whole I tend to resolve this using the Picard Method:
"There can be no justice as long as laws are absolute. Even life itself is an exercise in exceptions."
