Greens Plus...Alkalinity...Ionised Water

Is alkalinity in your body a concern to you? As I understand it, the majority of reactions that occur during the day as part of our metabolism lead to an acidic envoirnment. This is especially true when you consider weight training and intense activities like interval training.

A couple of people I know swear by Greens Plus as a method to mitigate this (plus the benefit of just getting in sufficient quantities of the good stuff in veg), and I know one that bangs on about ionized water for restoring pH balance.

At first I thought it was all BS, but I’m happy enough to keep an open mind on it and try to get a discussion going.

So… what’s the theory? And is there any scientific literature to back it up?!

I'm skeptical TBH. I think that it is all marketing hype by those supplement companies.

I know that when I was being sold those greens drinks that I was told to check the pH of my urine and that if it was acidic or whatever then I needed to drink a greens drink to balance out the pH.

Gary Taubes talks about it a bit in the Diet Delusion. He says something along the lines of the fact that your body's environment ie body temperature, blood pH etc is controlled to a very tight range, ie
homeostasis, and that the mechanism which controls blood pH involves excreting excess acidic compounds (or whatever) to your urine.

Ultimately I think it comes back to just eating a variety of real food made in a traditional manner. And anything sold by those supplement companies should be viewed with skepticism.
