as the title states, my new astra has its first problemo. the short story of last night involved 2 pissed off woken parents, a mystified me and a flat battery basically, even if i turn off my radio and everything else and lock the car, the radio decides to turn itself back on again after about an hour. it seems to be a common problem with new opels and although there are loads of people complaining about it, there doesnt seem to be any real solution. im hoping you lads, especially maybe Nissan Doctor, have some knowledge of a solution to this.

one solution mentioned online is to take out the fuses for the radio, and simply reinstall them.

the other is, buy a new cd30 radio.

These are the type of moronic replies people get to genuine questions on the motors forum everyday of the week. It also seems to be the same idiots replying to everything, posting every hour of the day. Trolls.

In answer to your question I would return the car to the garage you bought it in if it's still under warranty and insist that's the problem is rectified.

If it's not under warranty but still relatively new I would see if Opel will cover part of the cost of a new radio. Your local Opel garage can submit a claim for you to their head office and they may agree to even cover the entire cost.

Edit: Opel are normally quite decent about covering the cost of manufacturing defects on cars just out of warranty

As in pulling fuses every time you park it up or a few hours?
Barring a proper fix an inline switch on the 12V to the stereo would do it, mightn't be that messy looking either.

Jerry Hurley would sort you out if you don't want to tackle it yourself ;)

Is this really a common issue that folks replace the head unit for?

If the OP has a problem she can report it.

Keep up he bought it 4 days ago privately. But yes you're right motors forums are filled full of people giving useless advice

    As above

OP I have heard of them being taken out and fixed some how by radio specialists but I cannot add any more than that.

from looking on the internet most people seem to say that vauxhall/opel gave no help with the buying of a new radio. i bought it privately but got it checked out beforehand but this wouldnt show up on any diagnostic i bet. im not even sure if it existed before i bought the car last friday.
regarding the 'trolls', i know theyre taking the piss and even though im in a foul mood tonight due to the flat battery, it warms me inside to know im driving, and could afford to buy a better car than many on here ;)

he couldn't be a she. insurance was a factor when buying the car and girls don't get high premiums :p

pulling the fuse sounds like a nice temporary solution but i reckon if your going to splash the cash for a new head unit from opel, spurious double din units are really coming down in value and i'l bet you could get a brand name aftermarket unit for less than the cost of the opel standard stereo and it will have many more features. touchscreen/ mp3 and dvd player etc.

if i remember you bought this through a private sale so returning the car isn't really an option, what year is it?

Don't worry he will be along soon with his duster and apron to clean the thread.

I'm with you on keeping the original look.

How about a used radio from a breakers yard? Most will take it back if it has the same issue

from Opel, i'd sit down before i ask for a quote. i'm going to take a wild guess at 350. i could be miles out, but i suspect not.

buying second hand isn't really a choice, you might end up with another as bad as your own.

your stuck between a rock and a hard place and spurious is your only lifeline :p. then you can stick the dud headunit back in when you go to sell it again, just like someone did to you :(

edit : as above though, buy from a reputable breakers and you could return the unit, but either way in my opinion it's a timebomb and you never know when it'l catch you out again. it would be worth contacting opel to see did they ever make a revised unit, or will the stereo from a corsa/ vectra etc fit, to keep the OEM look.

Surely there is a facia thing to make a normal head unit look ok ish in it? Presumably the stereo in a 2005 Astra is not great anyway.

Between all the baby poo, vomit, huuuuuuuuge tears in the seats and the dodgy stereo 'tis just as well you are minted !!

this is gay, rrreeeeaaaalllll gay. im gonna ring opel tomorrow and see what they say. at the moment disconnecting the battery is how im managing and its not really my idea of classy. love the car, i really do, but this has more than taken the shine off it.

    Don't let it.

In the grand scheme of things it's a small problem, annoying yes, but small.

You have what looks like a fine car with the correct engine size for you to enjoy it

and where do i fit this etc?
it doesnt have vomit and baby poo its pretty clean but for me its shoite :

look at the last post on here please http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread.php?155429-Weird-radio-fault-CD-30-mp3/page2&highlight=CD30

Fit the switch I'm on about ? On the 12v supply to the stereo, you can mount it wherever suits you that's tidy, a nice switch wouldn't look too bad really. WAs only joking about the vomit etc miss D.

that comment sounds like opel did make a revised stereo. now go buy it :p

generally with stereo's, they get posted off and repaired under warranty while you are given a temporary unit in the meantime.

i understand your car isn't in warranty anymore, but if you spoke to the service manager, not so much the parts guy, i'd say he wouldn't have much problem sending your stereo off for repair.

Don't need a relay switch, just an on off switch to cut the 12 volt, relay is for when you ase using current to switch on something, like spot lights etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

ill try it tomorrow, might even get my mum to have a go if ive no success, she'd get anything for free :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

(YOUR ORIGINAL UNIT IS LINKED TO THE CAR'S ECU AND ONCE YOU FIT A REPLACEMENT UNIT, YOU WILL HAVE TO GET YOUR LOCAL VAUXHALL DEALER TO REMOVE YOUR ORIGINAL RADIO FROM THE MEMORY OF YOUR CAR. THEN THE REPLACEMENT WILL WORK FINE. THIS WOULD COST YOU BETWEEN £10 - £15 AT YOUR LOCAL VAUXHALL DEALERSHIP AND IS ONLY A 5 MINUTE JOB.)

IT WOULD COST YOU APPROXIMATELY £300 FROM THE VAUXHALL DEALER - BUY IT NOW FOR £75 PLUS POSTAGE.

damn i'm good, i was nearly spot on with the price
    UK BIDDERS ONLY PLEASE................

    yeah.

    try my other idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

i usually get around the uk bidders thing, and he was only an example, there are others.

    why the  face?

ill just ring opel and the guy james suggested tomorrow and see what they say, il also ask my dad about the switch. thanks lads

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

    why the  face?

your stereo is coded to your ECU and if you fit a second hand stereo you need to take it to opel to have it unlocked.

load of ****ing hassle. what a pointless idea. not that you can do much about it of course :o

I'm curious to know what you do for the 2 hours a day that you're not on the motors forum ?

    Do you sleep?

Are you the motors forum equivalent of the double jobbing Taxi/Dublin bus driver ?

I'll tell you what, why don't you PM me daily and summarise what's been going on in the motoring lives of all the motors forum members so as I can keep abreast of the latest happenings. One PM a day will do, around 8pm. Thanks. Good lad

I just MIGHT be able to get you in contact with him if it would help?

Is he a service manager or...? I would be immensely appreciative if you would! I don't see them offering me a refurbished one or anything though. I'd prefer to pay Opel €100 to fix it than some fella I dont know

if this falls through a call to BBA Remanufacturing in the UK might be worth a call, very competitive prices and it seems there isn't much they cant do with car electronics.

generally you post them your headunit in a specific packaging they send you, and as soon as it arrives (and you pay over the phone) they dispach a recon unit to you via courier :)

we used them a lot at work... maybe they still do, i don't work there anymore :P

Am I missing something or is there a reason why you just can't swap the power supply wire to something that isn't a constant live feed?

All that needs doing is to chop the 12V supply to the stereo and connect it to a 12V that is dead when ignition is off :) It's the same as my switch recommendation, the switch being the ignition rather than an actual switch :) Tiny bit of wiring only.

Of course the 12v to your stereo should die too after ignition is off, except for the trickle feed to the memory.

Hold on.. Isnt there 2 x 12v wires involved?
One with constant supply for the memory and one for switched supply?
Cut the wrong one and it will not store any stations
