Boy Defies Uniform Rule By Wearing A Skirt

Fighting against the man for a just cause? Or just plain silly?
A 12-year-old boy has worn a skirt to lessons in protest at his school's uniform policy which bans shorts.

Chris's mum says she is proud he is fighting for what he believes in

Chris Whitehead says being made to wear long trousers in summer when girls can wear skirts is "discriminatory".

This week the youngster borrowed his 11-year-old sister Joanna's uniform to wear to Impington Village College, near Cambridge, to garner support for his cause.

Around 30 fellow pupils waved placards saying, "Cool shorts, not hot pants", "Shorts for the long-term" and "What's wrong with my legs?"
"In the summer, girl students are allowed to wear skirts but boys are not allowed to wear shorts," said the aspiring politician, from Histon, near Cambridge.

"I realised short skirts are allowed but shorts are not, which means there is something wrong in the rules and it should be changed.
"I thought I could use this silly loophole to my advantage.

I am really proud he is brave enough to wear a skirt to school for what he believes in and back him all the way.
    Chris's mum Liz

"Wearing shorts is better because it keeps us cooler, especially at the moment because the weather recently has been really hot."

Chris wants headteacher Robert Campbell to scrap the rule created during a consultation on the school's uniform in 2009.

Mum Liz is backing her son's campaign: "I am delighted that Chris is taking action on what he believes in, which the school actually encourages, so he is only doing what he has been taught.

"I am really proud he is brave enough to wear a skirt to school for what he believes in and back him all the way."

Mr Campbell said this is not the first time the issue has arisen during summer months.

"Ultimately the boys can wear a skirt to school because it doesn't say they can't in the uniform policy and we would be discriminating against them if we did not allow it.

"Chris is a very bright and articulate student and we have got a very strong student council. He is one of only two year eight pupils on it."
Chris says he intends to continue wearing the outfit.

I read about this in a different article & it seems to me that the mother has more of a hand in this than she says. Maybe she just wanted to dress him up as a girl...

That kid has got balls of steel i must admit. Fair play to him.

When you think about it, its acceptable for most girls schools for the girls to wear pants or skirts so why not.

I think he's just trying to make a point, while not breaking any rules. Shorts are not allowed but there's nothing saying who has to wear a skirt

Often. The south east of England gets very warm in the summer. I lived 50 miles from that boy and regularly experienced summer temperatures in the mid 30ºs. And when you consider that English schools keep going in the summer up to mid-July the protest is more than valid.

    Fair play to him!

I wish I'd thought of that. I got suspended for wearing odd socks though. Fcukin Christian Brother fascists would get have given that lad some kicking for going to school in a skirt though.

Fair enough, although at this time of the year it would hardly break 20.

I presume his parent/s read and accepted the rules before they sent him to the school.
Uniform is agreed with parents' council so if parents feel a change is needed that do it the right way for Pete's sake.

We had to wear dark blue blue blazer in 35 C degree heat, and the boys has to wear slacks, and shirt and tie and we girls had to wear skirts with pantyhose or tights. Ugh not nice. No air conditioning in the school at the time either.

I think the boys in England in the summer should allowed to wear linen trousers.

Wool skirts are not exactly cooling either.

Do people over here get a a winter and summer uniform?

AFAIK, the rules changed in '09, during a consultation. Says so in the blurb.

So just accept the rules? Or are the rules wrong?

Fair play to the little lad, standing up for himself, WITHOUT breaking any rules. Smart kid. If that was me and my class, we'd just wear the trousers, and continue to sweat and beat the crap out of each other.

The last time I did it, a fella stopped, actually stopped his car and pulled over, and asked me how much.

I was both flattered, and concerned, tbh.
