Just wondering what class the people of AH would put themselves into?
Would you be "well to do",-posting on your solid gold laptop?
Or flat broke-posting on a stolen laptop?
    Or in between?

Classy bird (except for picking my ears with hair pins).

But it's a question I ask myself now and then...my parents grew up working class but my family would've been lower to middle middle class growing up or what was considered middle class in Ireland in the 80s. My parents struggled to bring up 5 kids, we weren't at all spoilt, wore hand-me-downs, got toys for xmas and birthday only but I'm from a nice town, my dad had a decent job and we went on holidays (in Ireland) most years. Now I'm earning about 12,000 a year net (in Spain teaching English) and most of my spare money is saving for months I don't have work. I've no one depending on me so I get by but I can't go away on holidays for more than a few days and have to be careful with money constantly. No splashing out. I've never had much money to spare for my whole adult life. I've never earned more than about 20,000 a year and now I'm earning about what you'd earn in a supermarket working full-time in Ireland. Am I working class in that case or does it depend on your background do you reckon?

I googled 'lower middle class' and got this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_middle_class

According to the first study, I'd be upper middle class. To the second, neither upper or middle, and the third's just got 'middle class'. Hmmm

Just different levels of snobbery really!

I exempt from classification I think.

I am nouveau pauvre. I live in genteel poverty. I used to think I was middle class growing up in Ireland, but then a decade + living in England and I felt less certain of that.

I'm classless. You can't pin me down.

I reckon it depends on your values more than what your parents were or did. That's my opinion and I know in England if your great great grandparents were miners, then that's it you're common for EVER, but over here, I think if you value education, and saving and so on... it's more about what you choose to spend the money you do have on rather than the amount of money you have.

I think there is definitely class in Ireland but luckily it's not carved in stone for several generations. I feel a lower class than my parents though.

Depends on how you define 'class' , your extreme wealth or abject poverty is not a barometer for class distinction, you can be an up yor own ar$e rich p.rick with no manners, vulgar, sloppy, obnoxious behaviour,in your eyes yoiu might think your upper class but in actual fact your lower than a snakes belly or you could be a pi$$ poor unemployed council estate average joe with impecable manners, courteous, thrusthworthy hard working and honest with the upmost respect for others, you may feel lower class but the other guy cant buy what you have.

Basically its not about where you were brought up but more How you were brought up,thats class!

    "Humanity is fundamental"

.......anyone spare a few quid? :o

    I wouldn't say so.

My great-grandparents were little more than peasant farmers tbh.
My grandparents were things like factory workers, cleaners, porters.
My parents both became teachers, university-educated.

So I'd say social mobility's quite easy over here really.

I hate the term class to be honest.

But I guess I'd fall into the working class background:

    1) Live in working class Northside Dublin
    2) Mam is a housewife.
    3) Dad is a plasterer for 30 odd years but work is slow now.
    4) 3 Bedroom attached house.

So if you follow the trend and each generation gets better then you must be Jesus

    Middle Class
    Working Class

When I can find two people who can actually agree on a definition of what these terms actually mean in the 21st Century I will tell you which I am.
