Hows about a megathread for all those live games that don't receive their own match thread, just for in-game discussion for when your watching on telly.

Here we go today, Donegal vs Antrim. Just heard the theme tune for the first time all year, THE BLOODS UP.

BAM, BAM BAM BAAAAAAM BA BA BAM,

BAM, BAM BAM BAAAAAAM BA BA BAM,

BA BA BA BAM BA BAAAAAAAAM,

BA BA BA BA BAM BA BAAAAAM, BA BA BAM BA BAAAAAAAAAAAM.

    BAMADAMABAM
    .

    Championship is back!!!!

Conditions are awful, but they train in much worse between January and March so no excuse for the fare on offer.

Good score there. If Donegal can get some momentum in the championship they could go far. Great season for them so far.

Still well within Antrim's reach but I find it hard to see them pulling it back. You never know though!

I dislike RTÉ analysis in all sports but their GAA panel are atrocious.

It sometimes depends on the mood of the lads - sometimes they are even entertaining - Brolly however always get the blood boiling no matter who is playing - he really is good at it.

Whats with the netting. The ball for that goal just went through it. Very schoolboy for what is suppose to be a high level sporting occasion. Imagine the ref didnt pick up on it and it was a crucial moment. The association really needs to step up if it wants to be respected. You wouldnt see it at an underage soccer game.

Have not seen such an uninspiring game and cumbersome display in some time, especially from Antrim.

Afraid to take shots on, making basic errors(missing close frees, dropping handpasses) all made for an awful watch.

To make it worse had a double with Aston Villa who were 7/1 and are winning 2-0. ARGH!

    Would ya not, no?

Plenty of unsavoury things going on in the world of soccer that you would never see in Gaelic games too ya know, things that are far more serious than inadequate netting.

I'll tell ya what else you wouldn't see at an underage soccer game. Dressing rooms and adequate facilities. I agree though the netting should be nailed down properly.

They're still using jumpers for goalposts?

Correct. It must have been one of the worst matches on The Sunday Game in many years.

But as the old song goes "Things can only get better". Right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 759 ✭✭✭mrgaa1

the major issue here is the crowd, or lack off, at that match. Yes the weather was extremely poor but with Antrim hurlers having played the previous night in Portlaoise and then their footballers up in Ballybofey the next day I'm sure Antrim supporters were not going to turn up at both places especially as the football was on TV.

Also they went on about the type of football etc.... all counties are now playing this - its just that by editing the highlights they can show what they want.

Yes a shocking bad game of football which leads to big arguments for 13-a-side at intercounty. But then are they out there to entertain or to win?

Anyone watch the "preview" TSG had last night for the up-coming championships?

Personally I thought there was a lot of lazy analysis on both the part of the football and the hurling analysts. For example the section was "new talent/talent to watch out for in 2011" which, I thought meant, that the panel would pick out a new young player who could make a serious impact on the championship (i.e. Noel McGrath 2 years ago or Joe Canning a year before him) but Pat Spillane picks Gooch Cooper while Liam Sheedy picks Michael Fennelly. Two players who have already collected All-Stars and All-Ireland medals.

I was hoping they might mention some of the new wave of Dublin or Cork footballers from their succesfull U-21 teams (in football) or at least mention people like Colin Fennelly or John o'neill in the hurling. It just smacked of not bothering to do any research at all and to make it up as they go along.

Also no sign of Loughnane last night - is he still on TSG?

Yeah I wasn't impressed with that. Lazy analysis is right, was hoping for a bit more in depth talk. For instance the talk about Connacht lasted all of three minutes (quite rightly I hear a few of you saying :pac: ) and just abruptly ended with predictions going to Mayo/Galway. Leaving out the finalists from last year...

And I don't think we can expect an impartial opinion from guys actually involved in the competition, of course Stephen Hiney is going to go for Dublin to win Liam McCarty!

I see we're getting a midweek GAA show, The Committee Room, hosted by Marty Morrisey. Tbh I was hoping for a show along the lines of Road to Croker from a few years ago.

IMO they had an even better show before that, "Breaking Ball" but for some unknown reason they just stopped making it mid-way through a season.

This committe room programme sounds a lot like a GAA version of soccer's MNS or rugby's "against the head"...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 572 ✭✭✭Chnandler Bong

Be interesting to see what The Committee Room is like,I think they should have got someone other than the insufferable Marty Morrissey to present it, someone lke Joanne Cantwell or Jackie Hurley, they're both excellent on the radio and are nice to look at.

Oh yeah, I couldn't remember the name of it! I figured there was no such show last year since RTE had their sports scheduling full with the World Cup.

Would definitely agree, breaking ball was the best GAA show ever.

Lads what we must all remember is that RTE is anti GAA. The head of sport there is a rugby head , and the amount of coverage GAA gets on RTE is pathetic and is declining.RTE has no interest in promoting the games at Club/College or underage level. TG4 provide far better coverage and also do shows like "laochra Gael" which are very good.

Would prefer if all rights to cover GAA were withdrawn from RTE and the GAA set up their own TV Channell.

The 2 Leinster football games live today ,Laois v Longford and Kildare v Wicklow.

Both Laois and Longford have made great progress in the past 12 months,Laois winning promotion to division 1 and Longford winning the division 4 title beating near neighbours and Connacht champions Roscommon and in the process going up to division 3. While I expect Laois to win I reckon this could be a very tight game with only a few points in it at the end.

As for Kildare v Wicklow there has been a very quite build up to this game but I'd expect the lillywhites to win here comfortably. Wicklow footballers have disappointed me,their still stuck in division 4 and bar a few great qualifier wins in 2009 they have never shown their true potential under Mick O'Dwyer.

As for the rest of the games Cork and Kerry should win comfortably in Munster,Sligo to beat Leitrim in Connacht and Derry should be far too good for Fermanagh in Ulster.
