Am I eating enough?

I've been following a low cab diet (IPD) for a good while now - say about a year. As a result of thyroid disease I have half a thyroid and found low carb the best for keeping my weight down - I don't need any thyroid medicine at present. Anyhoos over the last couple of months I've started to feel my weight starting to creep back up. I don't really weigh myself but some of my clothes feel a little tighter. I'm wondering if I may not be eating enough - I walk my dog for around 20 mins in the morning and a good hour in the evening - thinking about it I think I've started to put on weight since we've been having longer walks?

    breakfast - Protein shake
lunch - salad of iceberg, approx 2 tbl spoons of grated cheese, peppers, cucumber, approx 2 tbl spoons coleslaw, tuna (john west lime and pepper) or sliced beef (real meat not processed)
dinner - meat or fish and green veg/peppers/onion
during the day a couple of handful of nuts

The shakes aren't the best I know - I'm going to try and have actual food this week and see how I get on - eggs or ham & cheese slices etc.

It depends on your age, gender, height and weight. And of course, it's hard to know what portion sizes you're talking about. But I'd hazard a guess that you're on the low side of things. Really depends on the factors I mentioned though.

Sorry I'm female, 5'1 and was 10 stone last week I'll be 33 next month  If I buy the salad from the deli it fits in the smallest box (€1 cheaper than medium lol) and I don't think my portions are that big - yesterday I had a chop and 6 asparagus spears. I'm not going out of my way to take small portions or "diet" as such I think the balance may be off since I upped the dog's walks to help him heal after an operation on his leg?

Your BMR works out at about 1400 calories. That's the amount of calories you need to simply carry out your bodily functions and stay alive if you were to lie in bed 24/7.

Assuming you are moderately active each day, you probably burn just shy of 2000 calories per day. I'd eat around 1600 calories per day if I were you to lose weight comfortably if that's what you're after. You can't go wrong with eggs, meat, seeds, nuts, fruit and veg. High in satiety and vitamins and minerals.

Personally I wouldn't bother counting the calories in things like tomatoes, chives, asparagus, peppers or berries. There are very few calories in any of these things, but lots of micronutrients and fibre, which are good.

If you're unsure of the caloric values of the foods you eat, you can find out on www.fitday.com.

Unfortunately your BMR might be a bit lower with half a thyroid. :(

Make sure you eat enough fish and seaweed for iodine as that will help your thyroid work as efficiently as it can.

Best of luck and well done on the weight loss so far! (that's the diet I lost 4 stone on ;) maintaining more than 4 years now.)

Is it possiblt that the OP could have metabbolically adapted due to prolongued dieting i.e body is holding onto fat stores and shutting off other processes to preserve the fat? Just a thought
