Just seen an email from my protein and their going increasing the price of there whey products again! A 5kg bag of flavoured whey used to cost 62euro. Their new price is gonna be 71.30euro. I heard whey prices were going up but a 15% increase in a couple of months is crazy. Anyone else can confirm other brands have uped their prices as well?Im done with myprotein so anyone got any good suppliers?Thinking of using bulk powders as their prices dont seem to have increased

Was going to post up something about Bulkpowders prices gone up as of today. They sent a e-mail saying its gone up. Then a few hours later get one from Myprotein. The e-mails from both are saying the same things why the prices are going up. At least myprotein is giving us a chance to order before it goes up not like bulkpowders, who have put the prices up on most of their items.

i did a quick check on bulkpowder and my protein and bulkpowders are still cheaper after their £10 delivery cost for a 5kg bag of whey protein, works out at about 69euro,but i guess if you buy in bulk youl even save more with the delivey cost

Whey is only going one way! Buy blends as they are better value I think.

Some good comments below especially from "RobW".

I got the email from myProtein too. Quite a big rise but at least they're giving advance notice. BulkPowders prices have also went up.

I've just placed an order to stock up (2 of the 5kg bags of whey are for friends):

5kg * 4 Impact Whey Protein Chocolate Smooth
    1kg Creatine Monohydrate
    1kg L Glutamine
    500g L Leucine
    2.5kg Waxy Maize Starch

I work in the North so can get it delivered there. I done a price match against Iron Science (check out their prices, they're very cheap). It cam to a total of £215.15 (247 euro).

I put the same products in a basket on the Irish myProtein site and it comes to 307 euro - a 60 euro difference  God only knows how much it will come to after the price increase.

When I'm finished my current supplements (a few months) I'll start mixing a shake with all of the above ingredients.

    Aw this blows.

Whey is moving further an further away from being a cheap source of protein.

Unbelievable.... the price of 5kg of Flavoured Isolate is now €93.99.

If in the UK or Northern Ireland and you use their price match against www.ironscience.co.uk, you pay £56.99 (or €65.31)... now that's a slight difference

If you know someone with a Northern Address, you should get some delivered there before ironscience prices go up. Otherwise, just order off ironscience for Southern delivery (and use their MT5 discount code).

My myProtein order arrived last week to work in the North - 4 * 5kg bags Whey, 1 * 2.5kg bag Whey, 1kg Glutamine, 500g L-Leiucine, 2.5kg Waxy Maise Starch, 1kg Creatine Monohydrate - all price matched against ironscience.co.uk.

How much is shipping from Iron science to Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭marathonic

They're £37.95 for 4.5kg of 80% Whey and Iron Science delivery to Ireland is £14.89 - this is for one pack. If you buy 3 * 4.5kg, the shipping costs the same and you get a free pack of creatine.

Shipping is free for orders over £200 and MT5 is a 5% discount code

Since September 2010 there has been a 43% increase (in the price of wpc80) give or take and a big increase in restricted supply - some dairies are seeking whey from other dairies.

Since March of 2010 the increase is in the order of 87%.

The good news is that the price now appears to be stable and is unlikely to suffer any further price rises.

The bad news is that demand is still well ahead of current production.

A new joint venture is coming on stream in Germany in about August and that will produce about 600 tonnes per month but when this is shown against the 30,000 tonne annual usage for sports nutrition in the EU it will not be enough to drop the price, plus not all of the 600 tonnes will go to sports nutrition co's.

So for the foreseeable future prices will remain where they are. However there should be some easing in 2012 but one thing we are guaranteed of is that the prices seen in 2010 are as many dairy heads told me recently 'ancient history'.

There is a price below which a WPC80 cannot be sold as you cannot buy it from the dairies for less than a set price.

So I am surprised when I see CO's selling for less than this price. This is made even worse when they do not even deal direct with a dairy but buy off an intermediary.

As for other protein sources - Pea Protein Isolate and Soy Protein Isolate are both cheaper and higher in protein percentage than a WPC80. PPI is about 87% and SPI is around 91%.

Couple the above with the fact that there are (if you can fathom this) very few labs in the UK who can actually identify the the type of protein used to make up the % of protein found in the sample they tested.

When buying and spending your hard earned it's nice to know you are at least getting what you paid for. As you can see this could be easier said than done.

IMO whey is still good value - if a 5kg bag was 60 euro all in 0.0154c per gram of protein is about as good as it is atm.

I agree with John Cappa that blends are the way to go but only certain things will decrease the cost:

    • Pea Protein
    • Soy Protein
    • Any Carb source
    Things like:

    • Caesinate's
    • Hydrolysate's
    • Digestive enzymes etc.
    Will increase the price.

So you can kind of see that the only things that will bring the price down are not necessarily things you want included.

The key thing for all of us to remember is very simple - the price is rising and really the reasons why it is rising are irrelevant as there is nothing we can do about it - we either pay the new price or seek alternatives.

It would not be so bad if whey was going up in isolation but everything by and large is going up which only compounds the issue.

why have all the major food corporations bought into sports nutrition companies???

because there are huge profits to be made.

very little to do with the availability of milk. sure farmers are pouring milk down the drains due to the restrictive quotas they have

I thought they removed the restrictings on milk some years ago.
