    ...HOUR!!! http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/world/75053/50-rapes-per-hour-estimated-in-congo

I thought it was a weekly statistic or even daily, but per hour!!! Absolutely sick bastards!

Reasoning behind all of this madness? Why is it happening to such an extent over there? Discuss fellow boardsies, discuss...

Edit: Democratic rep. of Congo. Apologies.

OK, it's fair to assume that you consider Africa as a whole and Congo to be civilized then?

If you consider Africa to be so civilized why don't you live there for a while, maybe you'll change your mind. I myself have been to Africa and found it quite uncivilized

Not making excuses for any behaviour, or the statistics, but the Congo is as big, if not larger, in size, than Europe.

    It is a big place.

Here's some stats. Don't know how accurate they are.
    http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap_percap-crime-rapes-per-capita

Congo not on list. However if there is 50 per hour then that totals 438k per year and for a population of 71million giving a rate of about 6.1 (or six times the #1 entry on that list).

I lived in Africa for a year and a half. Of course there are some seriously rural places, where people wipe their bums with their hand, but in the cities you'd be surprised how developed it is. Go stay in Nairobi for a week or so, your stereotypes will be smashed to pieces.

But staying on topic, yes the D.R.C. is a huge country. With the capital city being so far away from the action there's no way they can keep an eye on everything, especially if 60% of the country is rainforest. But it does make you wonder what kind of sick animals are roaming the country.

So will your belongings and possibly your face. It's not known as Nai-robbery for nothing. Having said that, I'm a big fan of Addis Ababa, and there are plenty of great parts of Africa, and many millions of lovely Africans.

But the Congo is none of these. It is the very definition of uncivilised, and no lemon-sucking political correctness is going to change that any time soon.

jme2010, If you dissociate the mass and population of a country from a statistic, the impact can be greater than what it should be.

    Sorry, that sounds very clinical.

BBC have run features on the Congo for years, which I've linked to on boards before, grim reading.

    Estimated population of 70,916,439.

    Roughly 50 per hour is 1,200 a day, 8,400 a week.

Wonder what it'd be like in other countries with a similar population.

Is it not safe to say that those are just the reported ones. God only knows the actual number which is likely to be a multiple of that. Approx the same population size as the UK. 8,400 reported rapes per week.

Thats the problem. The official statistics (if indeed they are official or reliable) rarely reflect the true scale of a problem of this natue.

Ha! I spent most of my time in Nairobi, around ten months I'd say, (living in one of the slums actually), and I'm still alive, in possession of all my belonging EXCEPT for two phones, which were pick pocketed from me while I was absolutely langers in a nightclub. I had some of the best craic in my life in Nairobi.

It is much more dangerous than Dublin of course, (which gives you a nice little bit of adrenaline) but same rules apply: have your wits about you, don't walk in dodgy areas at night, don't flash cash etc etc.

Anyways, this thread is not about Nairobi.

I know, but I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to that WhiteOnion guy.

Now we can continue with the topic.

Also worth noting one in 4 South African men has raped a woman at least once.

When Nazi germany fell allied soldiers were given free reign in Berlin and a lot of German women were raped.

One has to wonder - do rapists really think differently to everyone else or are they simply less cautious about getting caught?

I understand entirely, figures can only be counted up from what's reported. But even he we were to take it at that rate, it's saying that a very big portion of their population is a victim of rape.

Find it to be quite an amazing figure...

No idea. I remembered something I'd heard before though.....
    Sexual Assault Prevalence
1.3 women (ages 18 and over) in the United States are forcibly raped each minute. That translates to 78 per hour, 1,871 per day, or 683,000 per year.

That was the Soviets and released slave labourers.

A more recent parallel with the Congo would be the Bosnian Serbs.

Of course. My point is, do the majority of people genuinely have respect for life or are they just not raping out of fear of getting caught. It would appear in situations where rape is easy to get away with the number of people committing it skyrockets

Way down deep in the middle of the Congo,
A hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango.
He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.
The rhino said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo"
Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the Congo.

Different cirumstances. You can't compare what Soviet soldiers would have experienced in the years preceding the fall of Berlin and what most Irish people go through in life.

I was looking at it in terms of a fair chunk of their population being guilty of rape. I agree it's staggering.

This has been going on for years. The congo has long been regarded as the ''worst place in the world to be a woman'' as both government troops and rebels use mass rape as a tool of war. Often women who have been raped are shunned by their families and communities as it is seen to bring shame upon the victim and her family.
Some quotes from the links to show how effective it is in breaking down communities and people
Human rights groups say it is not only the scale of the rape that is significant but the brutality that often accompanies it. Hospitals have treated women who have had guns, sticks and tin cans thrust into their vaginas after being raped. Armed men have also cut babies from the bellies of pregnant women after raping them.
No one group is responsible, and it is not only men in uniform who are committing the assaults. Médecins sans Frontières estimates that about two-thirds of rapes are carried out by combatants with armed groups from the Rwandan Hutu rebels and local Tutsi warlords, Mai Mai traditional militia and the Congolese government army. But many assaults are committed by civilian men, particularly in towns where the rule of law has broken down completely.
Hospitals have treated girls as young as three. Others have been abducted by armed groups as sex slaves and held in holes in the ground or lashed to trees.
Many of the women do not make it to hospital within the 72 hours after the rape in which anti-retroviral drugs to reduce the possibility of contracting HIV are most effective. Four per cent of those who seek treatment are men.
women in many villages dare not sleep in their own homes. Others are too afraid even to go to the outskirts of their communities to tend to crops because so many women have been seized in the fields, contributing to the rise in malnutrition and disease that has claimed so many lives.
    "
People live in fear so they live in the bush. They expose themselves to diseases: malaria, gastro-enteritis. It's cold at night. All of this claims lives," he said
    .
