Queen to cause city shutdown

THE GARDA intend to close streets across large areas of Dublin city, impose a no-parking zone on more than 50 roads for almost a week and conduct a stop-and-search operation on motorists and pedestrians as part of the security operation for the Queen’s visit.
One of the country’s biggest tourist attractions, Dublin Zoo, has been asked by the Garda to close for security reasons.
While the road closures and parking restrictions had been anticipated, the extent of disruption will surprise many.
During the four days of the Queen’s visit, between May 17th and 20th, the N7, N4 and M50 will be completely closed at times.
The closures will be announced in coming days.
The Phoenix Park, including Dublin Zoo, will also close during the same periods.
Gardaí also plan to shut down Dublin’s north and south quays and any adjacent bridges and streets for periods during the four-day period.
Exits on the M7/M9 motorway in Kildare will also be closed to accommodate the Queen’s visit to the National Stud on May 19th. While the motorway will not be closed, traffic will be slowed by gardaí at certain times.
Information is to be released today about road closures and related disruption that will be caused by the Queen’s visit to Cork and Tipperary and the visit to Dublin and Tipperary by US president Barack Obama.
From this Saturday until Friday week, a network of more than 50 streets in Dublin city will have a complete parking ban because of the Queen’s visit. Crowd control barriers will be erected along many of the streets and pedestrians will only be permitted to cross at designated points.
The affected areas cover some of the busiest parts of the city including O’Connell Street, Grafton Street, College Green, St Stephens Green, Nassau Street and Pearse Street.
Officers on foot will stop and search people and those questioned will be asked to indicate their destination. Checkpoints will also be set up and motorists will be questioned. Road users will also be asked to explain the purpose of their journey.
Details released yesterday concerning road closures and restrictions relate mainly to the Queen’s visit. Similar checks for Mr Obama’s visit, on May 23rd and 24th, are not being released until a later date due to security reasons.
Traffic restrictions for the Uefa Europa League Final at the Aviva stadium, Dublin, on May 18th, when the Queen will be here, will also be outlined in days ahead.
Similarly, traffic restrictions when the Republic of Ireland plays Northern Ireland in a soccer international at the Aviva on May 24th, when Mr Obama is here, will be revealed at a later date.
The Garda traffic, public order and security operation during the visits and soccer games extends to May 28th, when the Kings of Leon play Slane Castle, Co Meath.
Garda HQ said specific details as to where and when traffic controls and road closures will occur will be communicated soon.
This information will be communicated mainly through the media and information will be supplied by the Garda to media outlets hourly during periods of maximum disruption.
The force has urged people to use public transport where possible, though they have warned that even bus timetables will be disrupted.
Gardaí are also encouraging people to allow for delays, anticipate traffic congestion and plan for significant parking restrictions.

prepare for carnage, the whole city centre closed to traffic for the guts of a week, and large chunks of the M50 to be closed.
no visitor to the country is worth this much hassle imo.

It's a narrow and busy road there, so should probably take a couple of mates and ride abreast of one-another.

I hope she is bringing her cheque book to pay for all these security measures.

There is absolutely no benefit to Ireland from this woman visiting, so I'm not sure why it was agreed to.

If ever there was a reason for breaking out the bunting it's because the Dubs will be searched and hassled indiscriminately for 3 glorious days.

And for her visit to Cork they are closing off most of the city centre, the entire airport road and a number of its adjoining roads. A completely pointless visit that half of us couldn't give a **** about is now going to **** everyones day up. Its a normal working day and the closure of such main arteries around the city is ****ing amazingly bad planning.

Oh. OH!... Looks like this visit is going to be a royal pain in the ass!

OP, source? Because they can't spell or pluralise "Gardaí" properly and I feel I must let them know.

Also, they want Dublin Zoo to close and lose thousands in admission fees over a weekend during the sunniest part of the year? Pfft. Pity management will comply with the request no doubt.

Also the Europa league final is on that week as well which will cause more problems. Again, prefect timing.

FFS who really wants all this crap? Things where going grand between the two countries we don't need Dublin shut down like this (And I had planned to go to the bloody zoo too!)

What the fcuk is the point!?

What is the point of having 10,000 gardaí, some soldiers, damn SAS troops pissing around dublin, a huge bill, roads shut, people stopped and searched, people inconvenienced, massive delays, interruption to peoples daily lives, all for a few extra tourists?

Is it really worth it? I say no.

    Bad idea all round!

I think their planes have compasses, so there'll be no chance of that happening.

There will be lots of compo claims in the courts for alleged sexual assault afterwards as well.

Unless her pilot has a bad sense of direction, that wont happen.

Your right, this country is a joke but that's all our own making. Maybe we can give thanks to the Queen for her country's kind bilateral loan.

If the country got the day off work for her visit there wouldn't be half the bad feeling!

Anyway, all the Dubs go on how great the place is but you can't handle it when heads of state visit! :P

Anyway I will be in Donegal not giving a crap driving around my un-restricted roads and towns :P

    lets put this into perspective.

    in the next two weeks:
    the queen
    Obama
    Cameron
    Europa Cup
    Norn iron match
    kings of leon

    will be here.

Ireland will feature in every international paper, news, analysis and commentary.
Millions of people will read, see and hear about us.

From a tourism perspective this is brilliant and as one of the sectors that will help us out of this mess this opportunity is massive.

but sure lets ignore that cause as we all know Dublin is the centre of the universe and its best not to disrupt Dubs going about there business and whinging about that to!

    Get real!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,432 ✭✭✭df1985

The tourism thing is a load of ****e to be honest, mcaleese was in holland recently, did we all rush to get flights to amsterdam after it??

Yet we expect brits and yanks to come in their droves because the queen and obama visit here? any english people i know couldnt give a damn about where the queen is visiting.

You would think they would fill in the potholes just in case she gets a flat in her car.

I'm getting the popcorn out for this one, Dublin is going to be a mess.

When she visits, what's she going to be doing ? Would it not have made more sense for the Garda to just keep her away from The City in the first place ?

Come to think, was this planned in anyway ? Sounds like a few lads arranged this over a few pints down the local.

To be fair, state visits are fairly routine and happen many times a year. The majority of them pass without anybody knowing they have happened. The reason this one is so different is not because the Queen of England is the visitor, and therefore deserves a greater level of security, but because there are many more people who oppose this particular state visit and will do their best to disrupt things.

As you say, things are currently going ok between Britain and Ireland, so there shouldn't be any need to go to such lengths to keep a neighbouring head of state safe. But the reason these precautions are being taken and things are made far worse is because people who are deeply annoyed still by Her Majesty's presence can't just grin and bare it for a few days.

Sorry to bear bad news to members of An Garda Síochána, but stop and search powers were ruled to be a breach of human rights in January 2010. Reasonable grounds must be established first. You can't just stop and search anyone you like. If this does happen, away to your nearest tailor for a special suit... a law suit.
