    Hi guys,

I’m trying to tone the body up a small bit, Im 13 ½ stone and 6 foot 1. I don’t like the gym so Im doing push ups and sit ups as well as dumbbell curls at home in the evenings, I’d go for a run/cycle 3 or 4 times a week.

Just wondering on the sit up/push ups though, is it better to be doing reps of low amounts i.e. 6 sets of 20 or 3 sets of 40??

    Cheers

IMHO push-ups/sit-ups and DB curls are not going to get you very far.

If you want to tone up and don't like the gym then my recommendations would be
    • Get the book "Convict Conditioning" by Paul "Coach" Wade. Superb book on body weight exercises. Read and apply
    • Check out a Kettlebell workshop/beginners class(es). Then get yourself a kettlebell and have at it

sit ups are a waste of time ,
to lose 1Ib of fat you would have to do 250,000 sit ups , source (men's health mag),
Kettlebell seem to be the in thing , Medicine ball and dumbell excercises are also useful

1lb of fat is 3,500 calories so the above quote would mean that doing 71 pushups would burn a total of 1 calorie..... to put that into perspective, a 1 minute jog will burn in the region of 10 calories - which do you find more difficult, a one minute jog or 710 pushups? don't believe everything you read in men's health mag...

OP, I'm currently on week 2 of this program http://hundredpushups.com/. I'm using the middle column and it's pretty tough.

When I complete it, I'm going to drop back to week 3 and add weight to a backpack before working my way back up to week 6.

I'm doing a similar program for situps.
