Whey Vs Casein before bed

    Ive been thinkin about buying some casein protein to take just before i go to sleep and have read up on how its slow releasing etc and will work throughout the night. The reason i havnt gone out and bought it yet is im not sure if i want to part with my cash if i can get the same effect just buy mixing my regular whey with milk and downing that, which i have been doing until now?

    Now i realise at the end of the day these people are trying to sell something but they go on about "Specialized, slow-release, night-time proteins" and how "Waking up in the middle of the night to down an ordinary workout protein mix simply adds additional calories that are converted to fat." how much truth is in all this?

    Am i wasting my time having a whey w/milk shake at night, is it really worthwhile forking out for extra protein to reduce catabolism while i sleep, i mainly take a night shake to keep my metabolism working and burning fat am i fooling myself?

    your metabolism doesn't shut down while you sleep. just stick to what you're doing you don't need to buy casein.
    as long as you get your protein requirements in for the day your muscles will not eat themselves in the middle of the night.sleep easy!

    It's nonsense, they are mixing some facts with suggestions and assumption.

    For example, 33% of muscle growth potential is while you sleep.
    Which is true, its takes up 33% of the day. But they phrase it so that it soulds like you are missing out on 33% of potential if you don't have some night protein.

    None at all.
    Simply put, yes a whey shake before bed contains calories. But that doesn't means it gets converted to fat. Any protein shake has calories (they gloss over that fact with their night time protein)

    You aren't going to go catabolic while you sleep.
    You are still digesting you dinner most of the way through the night.

    Havign a shake will mean you metabolism its increased slightly as you digest it, but the increase won't degate the shake. If you are trying to burn fat having no shake would be better. Your metabolism doesn't shut down at night. Your heart is still pumping, brain ticking, lungs breathing, all the rest of your organs are burning energy. Obviously its slowed down.

    in short - If you want to put on more mass. Have a shake with milk, plain milk or cottage cheese.

    If you want to lose some more body fat then you don't need to eat anything. There is enough fuel there.

    This is a bit ambiguous to say the least. It's implying that if you consume an "ordinary" workout protein mix (and not their super-duper one), you'll gain fat.

    The fact is if you consume a surplus of extra calories beyond what your body needs (even super-duper calories), your body will convert this excess energy to fat.

    Here's my take on it.

    Waking up in the middle of the night is going to play havoc with your sleep and most probably your cortisol levels if it becomes a regular thing. That's not ever a good thing.

    Casein is my preferred choice of protein because it's so filling. I like to take it shortly before I go to bed. I can't ever sleep on an empty stomach and it helps me sleep like a baby.

    Casein is also much better than whey when it comes to making "protein fluff". Whey simply doesn't mix well enough to make it.

    I also take casein about 30 minutes before i go to bed, when i was taking whey with milk i found i could be lying awake 2 hours later and feeling...slightly peckish

    With the casein i may still be awake 2 hours later but with no hungry feeling so it works better for me.

    i also noticed that casein needs a lot more water to mix and has a very distinctive flavour...say i have chocolate when and cocolate casein...its a world apart flavour wise.

    I presume you meant to type "chocolate whey and chocolate casein", yeah?

    Actually you can make protein puddings by adding very little water. Mix powder and water (or milk) in a 1:1.25-1.5 ratio, meaning for each scoop of powder you take 1.25-1.5 scoops of water. Less water (i.e. 1.25) yields a thicker pudding and more water (i.e. 1.5) a smoother pudding.

    I thicken it up even more by adding a banana to the mix. Tastes fantastic and is very filling, despite the lack of calories.

    yes indeed, that what i meant

    I likek the look of the recipies, the only thing im afraid of is that if it actually tastes really nice....having just the one could be an issue.....take for example a dime bar...now i just love dime bars...and back in the day i could eat 10 dime bars during a movie without a second thought, but now..that im training etc i cant even have one...knowing that having one put me in temptations path and im rubbish with temptation:o, so having none is the answer

    I'd just be worried that casein pudding could be the same....it aint healthy if ya eat 10 of'em:rolleyes:

    Is it Optimum Nutrition casein protein you are taking? If so I could not recommend Cookies and Cream flavour enough, Something I look forward to taking before bed :D

    No, he doesn't actually advocate the intake of supplements. Here are the ones he says can help you but he insists they are not essential in any way - http://www.leangains.com/2010/01/supplements-you-might-actually-find_09.html
    "Supplements are certainly not critical to your success and you may in fact do just as well without them. A balanced whole foods diet goes a very long way."

    He is also drug-free believe it or not. He uses a combination of intermittent fasting and strength training ala Stuart McRoberts.
    "Generally speaking, people have no business contemplating specialization-routines for lagging body parts until they achieve two out of the following four goals: bench press 1.5 x body weight, chin-up 1.5 x body weight, squat 2 x body weight or deadlift 2.5 x body weight."

    Finally, he's refreshingly honest and downright blunt, which is a welcome change from all the thousand-Watt-smile charlatans who dominate the fitness industry these days.

    Ah jesus. This lad here in the article. Should I infer from the ridiculous cut of the guy that intermittent fasting is something I should really look into or is he just peddling some product/s?
    Lean gains does appear to work. But takes dedication, and just because it works doesn't mean its best or even for you. Great blog though

    I was going to start leangains to see, but timing it around my work gym schedule was proving tough so went a different route

    Steering away from the nutritional aspect slightly to the more pragmatic:
    Eating casein before bed (preferably in a not too liquidy suspension) I find satiates me much better than whey when I'm on a calorie deficit.

    Whey I find tends to be pretty useless in general when cutting unless right before/after a workout. Just sooo hungry with it. Casein isn't a whole lot better, but it is better...

    Yeah yeah I know almost better to avoid powders altogether, but it's difficult when you're trying to eat 150g-200g per day.
