Saw two of these in two days. 2nd one was a foreign looking dude trying to doing a burn out leaving the Lidl car park. Combined with the grunting tractor noises and smell it was cringeworthy.

The only thing I really don't understand is how it took so long for these to appear, or maybe I just didn't notice them till now.

Theres a difference between a 520d M-Sport and a 520d with an M5 badge. One is perfectly acceptable and the other is plain stupid.

factory MSports are not trying and in no way are an M Powered version, those that think a BMW with MSport kit is an M car wanabee are seriously deluded

No. I'm not into tacky plastic addenda of any sort. I agree with you about M5 badges on a 520d, I just don't think that the factory knacker pack is any different.

Come on now, they're all trying to make the car look like something it's not. To fixate on one badge in the middle of a sea of plastic and fat wheels is IMO to fail to see the wood for the trees.

It's not about trying to be an M car, it's about trying to look cooler for the neighbours. And this is what unites a factory MPack, a spurious M5 badge, and a set of furry dice on a 73 Capri - they're all peacocking. To claim that one is silly and the other is not is just favouring one form of gaudiness over another.

Anan1, you always make this argument which I dont agree with btw.

Anyway the OP is surely referring to 5 series badged and styled in an attempt to fool people into thinking they own an M5. This would often include the quad tail pipes, the wing cut outs and of course the M5 badge. This is what the thread is about. IMO you have deliberately derailed the thread with this old argument of yours about factory M packs.
They are not the same thing. One is a factory produced package which I would argue takes the old man appearance from the 5 series, both internally and externally together with mild suspension changes. The other is just a stupid fake.

How could you chose this: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2128606 (and this is an SE which has decent alloys at least.)

    Over this say: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2134954

The Msport is in a different league

Whats wrong with wanting to have a better looking car?

Anan1, by your reasoning, the sport Sport Pack 2 on my Alfa 156, with the faux carbon fibre dash and the better more comfortable seats with the red stitching and the 16" teledial alloys is me just peacocking for the neighbours? Sue me for wanting to have a nicer looking car without pretending that it's something that it's not.

Take the pic kceire posted above, for example. Do you honestly think the owner of that car set out to fool people into thinking that it's an M5? Personally, I think it's a charge that could better be laid at the door of a 520D w MPack owner. I'm not derailing the thread, i'm making a point that you disagree with.

Where this argument falls down when talking about BMWs (ignoring its a factory option) is that this isnt an "option" at all in reality, well over 60% of the e60 5 series was sold with the MSport pack. It was so popular it became the only style offered in some dealers. Which makes it the "standard" kit on an E60/61.

Off the top of my head, MSport kits were standard on the late UK models 840Ci too. They are almost defacto standard on the higher end 5 series too (535d). I would imagine there are several other BMWs (non-M and CSi cars) that had it as the only factory fitted option.

Here are two BMWs, both with MSport kits, one is the only kit offered and the other is by lack of choice and extreme popularity effectively the "default" kit:
    630e6f91.jpg

The "RS4" kit on an A4 is not at all the same as the MSport pack:
    - Isnt an "RS4 kit" as RS4s do not look anything like that, its a quattro GMBH kit (like the VW Votex kit is for VWs)
    - An Sline Kit and Badge is a nice way of customising and tiding up a car, an RS4 (or M3/M5) badge is just lying
    - quattro kits were never as popular as MSport kits

Whats wrong with wanting to have a better looking car?

Some people think sticking an eBay M5 badge on the boot looks good. Some people think the RS4 Tdi look is cool.

    What's wrong with that?

the pic kceire posted is very rare to see, normally idiots just stick on an m badge becuase they have an msport pack on thier car, but that particular idiot went the whole way and stuck on an m5 badge, lets just say his car knowledge could be written on a match box, but thats way off topic. anyone who ticks the msport package on the order list of say a new 5series is not trying to fool anyone into believing its an m5, they are ticking it to have the better looks of the msport body kit, the nicer smaller steering wheel, the nicer gear knob and sills, nicer wheels and suspension that is 15mm lower and stiffer than the se. you shouldnt see a problem with that but you do, i see a problem with people sticking on quad tail pipes fake wing grills and m5 mirrors, they are the real gob ****es, which is exactly the same as putting on an rs4 kit and badge along with the powerflow twin pipes on a 1.9 turf burner a4. i hope you can see the differnce between the three now.

I couldn't imagine buying a new BMW myself and not optioning the car to my tastes. I'm sure some do, but i'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that most 520d w MPack owners were not pushed by dealer stock issues into accepting an option that they didn't want. It is true, though, that some cars are only available with the MPack.

Thats what lead to this point, seemingly most peoples tastes were they like the MSPort kit.. not surprising as its designed to be liked. :)
In the second hand market the options list choice doesnt exist; both my mothers and sisters cars have MPacks. My sister hated the SE suspension and my mother had no choice due to the general spec of the car. Both liked the MSport anyhow (I presume) but one has a walled garden so neighbours cannot see the car and the other has no neighbours... :P

I had a E39 530i SE and the suspension and general look were squishy and unattractive compared to the MSport.
Some people think sticking an eBay M5 badge on the boot looks good. Some people think the RS4 Tdi look is cool.

    What's wrong with that?
Having bad taste is wrong and should be severly punished. I will determine what good taste is for all. :pac:

I was saying it within the realms of normal upgrading not the knobjockery that sees people sticking m5 badges on 520d's.

Doesn't the Msport pack also include upgraded suspension and extra toys?

On looks only, personally I think there's a huge difference between an Msport pack and an M5 badge.

The first is just making your car look different stylistically, it's a matter of taste but imho it's an improvement.

The second though is trying to pretend that the car is something it is not. It's pretentious and just screams wannabee.

    I agree with Anan1 to a degree. The fake M5s are sad/wrong/knackery.
The M-Sport packs aren't as bad but are still a bit fur-coat-no-knickers on something like a 520d.

how many actual fake m5's do you see with quad pipes mirrors and front bumpers with no spot lights along with wing grills cut out? or are you getting confused with normal 5series with msport packs an an mbadge, not an m5 badge.

To me the argument that an M-sport pack is a "bit fur coat and no kickers" is heading in the direction that we should all drive around in bog standard cars with steel wheels and nothing to enhance the styling unless its the marquees most exclusive model. i.e. if you dont drive an M5 you should be stuck with the most bland possible looking 5 series.

You're missing the point entirely. We should all drive what we like, and enjoy the fruits of our hard-earned money. And when we look at someone else's car and think 'that looks a bit sh1t', we should remind ourselves that other people are thinking the same about our cars, and that really, all that matters is that we each like our own car. Do you really think i'd be getting all hormonal if you all told me you didn't think much of my Forester's looks?

I think it's obvious that BMW call their factory cosmetic knobjockery upgrades "M-Sport" and use the M badge on it in the hopes that the image of the actual M cars will rub off on these tricked-out diesels.

In that, they are no different from a young lad in Magherafelt with his TDi.

I see the angle, but to think that you obviously are misunderstanding some fundemental differences:

BMW MSport - Has no exterior badge, has uprated suspension, seats, is an OEM look and looks fairly similar to an M-Car.
MSport kits cost quite a bit to retro fit...

Magherafelt with his TDi. - not only has a badge, but typically one from a completely different car (!) , is not an "OEM" look as most of these are B6 A4s of which there is no RS4. Not only that, but the kit isnt meant to look like an RS4 anyhow (in Audi's eyes, only the thick muckers themselves get confused on this).
RS4 Badge is under a tenner on eBay...

I think our Alfa has the SP1/2 (?) kit too then, as it has that lower bumper but on a Sportwagon... I thought it looked well, till now. :D

In fairness, qz, that looks a hell of a lot better than I was expecting. I still prefer the Lusso interior, but i'm about 50/50 on whether the 15" wheels with the smaller holes or the ones you have look better. I fully withdraw the vandalism comment, in any case.

I think there is a fair bit of difference in that blue M5 wannabe and a well kept OEM looking M-Sport

    IMG_2044-1.jpg

I even have OEM M5 wheels on mine, but that is because I prefer the way they look to any other wheel out there (apart from BBS LMs) No extra badges, no M5 mirrors or grills, just a nice looking 520i with M5 wheels.
