I'm going to London next month for 5 days. I'll be straight down to Casino arcade near Goodge St. station for a game or 10 of Darius Burst. Hopefully I can drag my brother along as well for some SSF2T. That every arcade in the world doesn't have that game mystifies me.

That limited edition looks lovely but lord that's some crazy money! I'd settle for the standard edition, use the change to buy a cab for it and still have lots left over. :)

*sigh* It's a bit unfair that the one genre so many folks love seems to be the most flippin' expensive.

Why can't the market for, say, 'Imagine!...' games skyrocket and the shooting game market totally nosedive through the floor?

The things we do for the love of our favourite video games eh? That said, I certainly wouldn't pay that kind of cash for what is admittedly a beautiful kit. You'd spend a boatload buying it for it to just sit there and hope and pray it becomes an investment piece.

Not really my sort of scene to be honest. Not at the very high end of the market anyway.

    What?!!?!?!!?!?!?

    Ah!!!!!!!

    ah!!!!!!!!!

I always drop in there for a few games when I'm over in London. Excuse me while I go mourn. :(

I wonder what's happening to all the cabs? That place was absolutely packed with stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,994 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

    Yup.

I've played that machine like every couple of years going back to 2000 though. Back when it wasn't emulated in MAME felt very exclusive. I love those Pony Mk II cabinets they had in there as well. You're looking down on the screen very fun for playing shmups.

    4644953927_77bc8c6214.jpg

The cabs are mostly still in there. Some might get relocated to other arcades.

TBH, I think Casino is the better arcade even if it's tiny. 90pc of Trocadero was crap racing and lightgun games I've no interest in playing anymore.

Fingers crossed they get relocated and not just fecked out. I'd say the VS city fighting cabs and newer stuff like the Vewlix ones will be snapped up. But I don't hold much hope for things like that Raiden II board.

Even if a lot of the games are dedicated gun and racing cabs, you still can't beat that sensation of being in a massiv, multi floored arcade full of people. It was one of the last places on earth you could still go for that. Such a shame. :(

I've never been in Casino. Whereabouts is it? Do they have many shmup machines or is it mainly fighters?

They have Darius Burst EX Another Chronicle. That's reason enough to visit!

    The big one, 4 player?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,994 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

Yeah that's the one. They've usually got 6 or 8 other shmups up and running (while troc only ever had raiden 2 and Strikers 3) and rotate the selection often. I think some peeps from the shmups.com forum loan them boards and maintain the cabinets.

Stern location test all their pinball machines there so they always have the latest ones.

Rest is fighters and a few puzzlers. It's not big but the selections different than you'll see anywhere else.

Google 'Goodge St. Casino' for directions. It's pretty much right outside the underground station.

There are a couple of other decent ones i haven't been in. Going to ask on shmups.com i'll link details. Theres a namco one by the london eye for instance

Just captured this video tonight, testing Sega Saturn video. Input was my NTSC-J Saturn with proper RGB scart out to my capture setup.

Reasonably pleased with my first capture video, just not my lousy gaming skills.

Here's the amazeballs Donpachi stage one. :)

Espgaluda II HD was released yesterday. Bit disappointed this wasn't a free upgrade, now we have to buy the bloody thing again.

A really cool video behind the scenes of the brand new Dreamcast game. Anyone pre-ordered besides myself?

Surely the game would look better in standard definition? I'd imagine sprites looking pretty awful in HD.

Seems like a new version of Mame can play most of the recent Cave shmups. Although he says you need a beefy PC, it might be interesting for those without the means to play them via 360 or PCB.

I've never heard of that game. Looks really really nice. Not too expensive either. I think I may put in an order myself.

Holy ****, do want. The blue ship trail which stays half way across the screen before the level select just looks sheer awesome.

Now that is an interesting development. I guess they're the arcade PCB dumps. Definitely worth looking in to.

Isn't that Darius cab beautiful? What an experience it must be to play it on that. Remember the original Darius was rolled out on a 3 screen setup, even beefier!

Sturmwind is looking awesome. I preordered the second I saw it. Do a Steven Emmanuelle Ulysses SI and order two copies! :D The good part is it comes out the week after DoDonpachi Daifukkakjsjksjlfkjhsdfhsadklihjsflkajflwofujeoiufjfjju comes out. Got that pre-ordered at Amazon the day it was listed with a price drop guarantee too. :)

I must check out MAME at some point. It's never really interested me though as I've always liked to own the real thing. When it comes to Cave PCB's though the cost more than justifies use of MAME I think!

I wonder how much we'd have to bribe Dr. Quirky to get one of them in? :pac:

He probably wouldn't make too much money on it either with all of us cheap bastards trying to 1CC the thing heh

I've been very 'meh' towards MAME and emulation in general for years. Have always rathered the real thing. Never even considered putting anything other than the real thing in a cab.

Played Andrew76's cab a few weeks ago with Hyperspin setup and my opinion changed on the spot. It's a thing of beauty.

I'm a mint in box collector/hoarder true & true...but I say it time & time again...having a nice, easy to use interface on a mame pc inside a cab just kicks ass.

Most of the games I'd be interested in are 1:1 indistinguishable from the real thing, I know as I had the boards beside me to compare.

It's nice to have pcb's etc, lord knows I paid enough for some of them...but I don't buy into this elitist crap that because something is emulated, its not authentic. If its authentic enough to make a collector like me sell off my boards, that'll do me just nicley

This automatically enforces the rule that you mandatorily sniff your games. :D

On a personal observation of my collecting habits, I've no issues with MAME, just for me I like to buy items to keep, collect and most importantly, play. I don't consider myself to have any kind of elitist train of thought, it's just my view on my own collection roadmap. I understand your point though and people who do hold those sorts of views and attitudes regarding any sort of collection building should be given a wide berth. :)

Present company accpeted of course :)

I've come across it before though, its like there's a stigma attached to Mame cabs. You do hear of cabs being "destroyed" in order to run emu's etc. That used to be the case maybe, but with the advent of *PAC products, the pc essentially becomes a pcb leaving the cab completely original.

    Oh, I also don't sniff games <just for the record> :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

I think that if someone is happy with a MAME cab, that's great, so long as they enjoy using the cab and playing games on I don't see the problem with it.

Converting a cabinet in to a fridge, for example, I find annoying as its a waste of its original purpose. Someone else is missing out because of it. I've no idea if that has been done but you get my drift.

What shmups are good on Mame, as nearly have my xbox - jamma working. Are all the CAVE games been dumbed yet.

For me the perfect system is a cab setup to use the original JAMMA as well as a Hyperspin PC and an Xbox 360.

And EnterNow is completely correct, a mame/Hyperspin PC is just another pcb inside the cab so I don't see why people go on about it as if you've pissed on the thing.

A Taito Type X² system is just a PC setup inside a cab for example.

I really love having all the options.
