Its fantastic to have them but I wonder why they are not going on the same channel numbers as the UK,those slots are free on the ROI EPG after all>

Not sure if these have been posted yet

    • BBC Three 229
    • BBC Four 230
    • Cbeebies 613
    • CBBC 614

They're a long way from the action - way out in the sticks

    That's ridiculous !

    Why not just move BBC1 / BBC2 down to 115 / 116 and add BBC3 / BBC4 to 141 / 142 ?

Somebody might see sense before the official launch. It would be easier to leave BBC1/2 where they are and just give BBC3/4 the same EPG slots as in the UK.

I would have preferred if they had moved BBC1 and BBC2 to 115 and 116 and place BBC3 and BBC4 on 141 and 142 respectively.
Don't really understand why they can't do that?? It would make so much sense and surely would result in higher viewership if the channels were located there. So it must be Sky who are not letting them do this.

Waste of time launching the channels here on 229 and 230, who ever goes near that end of the guide? I know I'll just end up forgetting about them.

On another note, isn't the Entertainment section of the EPG getting fairly full. There's only about 9 spaces left now.

Possibly Sky consider them to be PSB slots and should RTE's new channels launch on satellite they will be given these slots instead of something near the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,003 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Only 101-105 are reserved for PSBs. 3e should NOT have 105, but that's another story...!

Changing the position for BBC 1 & 2 means advising customers (like a leaflet in the Sky mag) so that's probably a non-runner.

BBC don't really care where they are, Sky will be paying them a fixed price for this on our behalf. BBC only need to keep the UK licence payer happy.

Way back in the early day's BBC 1 NI was on channel 214. It was on it's own for a month before BBC 2 NI joined it on 215.

BBC3 + BBC4 don't broadcast until 7pm. BBC3has a lot of comedy and entertainment shows,BBC4 is more artsy and has documentaries etc.

    One word: w00t!

We've been waiting so long for this that my kids have grown out of cbeebies but at least can now record BBC4.

I assume this is partly down to UPC raising their game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,106 ✭✭✭Widescreen

I thought UPC went the opposite and got rid of a few popular channels the other week, itv 2,3,4 for starters...

I think it may be caused by having it still stored in your "other channels". Try deleting it from other channels and see if it fixes the problem.

it is deleted from other channels but the bar is still there

will we get bbc one HD now. And maybe ITV 1 2 3 4 HD

will we get bbc one HD now. And maybe ITV 1 2 3 4 HD

The reason cable has UTV is the agreement is years old and predates any other contracts.

TV 3 has the rights to the ITV stuff in Ireland that is why they have kept UTV and the other ITVs off Sky Ireland.

UPC added on the extra ITV channels at the start of last year TV3 challenged it and now they are gone.

There was never any problem with the BBC channels Sky just did not want to pay BBC for the rights to put their channels on the Irish EPG.

UPC had all the extra BBC channels and people like to use them that is why Sky got the finger out and added them onto the Irish EPG.

UTV being on UPC is the one odd loophole other then that there will be no ITV channels on Irish pay tv platforms as TV3 hold all the rights.

BBC has a good working relationship with UPC RTE and Sky the ITV channel rights on the other hand are a commercial minefield.

You can thank TV3 for this.

As regards BBC 1 HD UPC paid BBC the extra money to add it on there is nothing stopping Sky doing the same if their Irish customers pressure them enough.

Late to the party I know, just found these channels today.
Do you think it likely they'd add BBC News to the line up or perhaps BBC World News? (both would be fantastic)

    This too shall pass.

I doubt they would put BBC World News at that orbital position for just Irish viewers.

I am sure you do but the question asked is what channels would be missing from the EPG.

It would be far most cost effective for them to simply put the BBC News Channel on the Irish EPG. Its FTA already and there are little or no rights issues involved.

The fact that BBC World News and BBC News Channel are both available on UPC is simply a legacy of BBC World News having been there first. If the BBC News Channel had been there from the off, I'd wager BBC World News would never have been added.
