I have an ipod touch which I might as well strap onto my mobile I have it with me all the time, I love my apps, I have a load of music in itunes.

I'll be off contract with Vodafone in June, but am seriously considering breaking it early to take up three's current iphone 4 offer on the €40/pm tariff.

Should I be looking at any other handset or network, or biding my time for something else?

I have DSL broadband wifi at home, though if tethering turns out to be a runner I'll be able to bin my landline when I'm off contract with that.

Just be aware that 3s network does not work. Go to the 3 forums and see all the complaints for yourself, internet keeps dropping.

Go android instead, you won't regret it :).

It depends what you expect but i think you should be satisfied if you will buy iPhone 4, it's really good phone and music/video player as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40 Wrighty82

I reckon go for it. To be honest Androids and Iphones are getting more and more alike so you can't lose

Tethering on Three is no match for a fixed line in terms of reliability, if you are a light surfer/email etc. you might be OK, but if not, don't budget based on dropping your existing DSL.

If you use the iPod touch that much, I'd say yeah - go for the iPhone.

The Iphone4 is fine, its a decent phone, its that feckin itunes, worst POS software ever, and Apple make you use it for everything. Then there's the hope all your media is in the format Apple like or itunes won't sync it or you'll need to jailbreak to play it.

so the android is better! i just heard there on the 3 offer there looking for 150 deposit but u get it back though so technically its not free :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,260 ✭✭✭Viper_JB

The hardware + os on the newer androids blows the iphone away really, have a mess around with the desire HD in the three shop (can get it with the all you can eat data too) if you like it and can wait, get a galaxy s 2 should be a really great phone. If not then the desire HD is another great phone. I've found 3 to be a good operator so far, my bill never goes over 40 and the all you can eat data is pretty much better then anything else around at this price.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 184 ✭✭yoyo83

ya im goin to chance my arm next week but if they ask about this 150 deposit it put me off straight away!

It was never free, there's a 24 month x €40 commitment, which is fine if you're consistently spending that amount already.

True that... theres always a catch

is it set in stone that you have to pay 150 euro deposit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

Depends on credit check. Thus depends on whether venus is in-phase or some such voodoo. Having a new bank account is a no-no for example.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 184 ✭✭yoyo83

ya they have to check the credit check on the account dont think i bother now lol

what does this galaxy s2 offer that the iphone doesnt?

I have an HTC desire and it really is deadly being able to drag and drop your music and video files onto it and not having to install any software. If you have the itouch and like it, might as well stick with apple. Some people love itunes, I hate it myself. It seems to try and be to clever and do things I don't want it to do. Can't beat drag and drop simple mp3 files and folders.

Although, if I was buying now, I'd wait for a few new phones to come out, like the new galaxy and sensation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

what does this galaxy s2 offer that the iphone doesnt?

Better Hardware. Slimmer Design. Better Camera. Customizable OS. Google Maps Navigation. Choice of More Memory (16GB Min Internal + 32GBB MicroSD)

And hey no iTunes :) As said before. Its just drag and drop which i find to be alot less painful than using iTunes or Zune in my case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,060 ✭✭✭Kenny Logins

what does this galaxy s2 offer that the iphone doesnt?

    Freedom from iTunes.

A 'share' context menu ( how do iPhones function without this....? (rhetorical))

    Home screen widgets.

Cloud services, such as contact management.

    Flash.

    USB hosting.

    Drag and drop file management.

    etc.

One thing the iphone doesn't offer is the variety of choices for your next phone. If you go with Apple, you'll have to go with Apple again next time, go with Android you have a choice of many phones by many manufacturers. Apple tend to try to lock you into a lifelong commitment

That all you can eat data sure is tempting. Even if the iPhone isn't a runner, the other networks aren't even in the same ball park in terms of price plans. Assuming it works, of course

meteor bill pay smart for the same price 40 a month
    400 mins
    400 txt
    2 gb data
free meteor to metor calls and txt
    Voice mail free
Out of bundle costs Cost per min 25c, Cost per text: 10c

    3 ireland
350 flexi units included = 350 mins or 700 txts
    All you can Eat Data
    free 3 to 3
    1 Free† Addon
    Voicemail (per min): 15c
Out of bundle costs Cost per min: 34c, Cost per text: 17c

    so meteor has more mins,
    no charge for voice mail,
    cheaper out of bundle cost.

3 has more data but 90% of users are never even gona go over 1gb a month
    never mind go over 2gb.

that drag and drop function sounds easy and good, iv got an ipod so i know how awkward itunes can be.

when is this galaxy s2 phone out lads and do you know how much it will be?

just a few more questions about the galaxy..

can you get the sky sports news app on it?

can you get the navigation system app for it? il need that for my car in september.

is there a better selection of apps for it or is the iphone the best for apps?

    thanks

    its not a free iphone.
Its a subsidised iphone that you are paying off in installments.
The price of the phone is already included into the plan cost.

i.e the same plan the with three ireland is 30 euro a month sim only.
Your paying an extra 10 euro a month for what?
Yes that right, for the privilage of getting the phone,
    so the actual cost is 10 x 24 = 240 euro
That is how much your paying for the phone itself

My point is you were comparing a Meteor 40 quid plan with a Three 40 quid plan without pointing out that the Three plan gives the contract holder an iPhone 4 at no additional cost.

Plenty of Sky sports apps on it. https://market.android.com/search?q=sky+sports&so=1&c=apps. You can search all the apps the online webpage.

Free Google Maps with Street View Navigation come one the phone. Or either way you can install it from the Android Market.

Most apps wouldnt be as high quality as the ones on iPhone. But the majority of the most popular apps are pretty decent.

And best of all it charges via microusb. Proprietary cables are really just not cool in this day and age.

Although it is true that Apple needs to use a special cable because only a reinforced nano-titanium cable can carry the special electricity the iphone needs.

My gut instinct is saying to hang on for the new iphone. If you sign a contract now and apple bring out a new phone in a month you will be limited to an ultimatly old phone for the rest of the contract!

This is very true. If you are unlucky enough to own an older model all your friends will shun you. Better run to the apple store and start queuing straight away!

You can say the same for any type of phone tho, there will always be something better out in the near future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 605 ✭✭✭omega666

Yeah but with pre pay your not suck in a 2 year contract and you can
sign up to cheaper sim only plans from any carrier you like.
By the time your 2 year contract is up the iphone6 will most likely be the current model in use!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

Pre pay data is too expensive (on all networks). You really gotta have a contract unfortunately to use a smartphone properly.

It's so frustrating when you compare the iphone in Ireland to the US... In the US when a new phone comes out you get the option to upgrade. You can just buy the new one without affecting your contract! That would make too much sense to happen here! Think within the 12month life of a contract they could get you to buy two phones...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

You can always just sell the phone after a year...If its a good high quality phone the value wont depreciate and max you'll need to fork out is a 100 quid for a brand new phone in my experience...

I spent a large amount of money on my first smart phone. Since then i sold it and bought a new one. Cost me 80 quid.

If you look at it that way it costs less than actually buying a crappy dumb phone yearly. Makes the network offers look bad too. As im free to change anytime i want.

Also the ability to swap around to any 30 day contract i want every 30 days :)

I can get on Three's Classic Flex Plan for 30 quid instead of 40 a month :)

    40 x 24 = 960
30 x 24 = 720 (i can spend the extra on a new upgrade myself without getting into the contract)

Also id find meteor better for value. They actually have real unlimited calls and texts to meteor. 70% of people i call are on meteor so i barely even use the mints allocated.
