It's a very individual thing but some of the more known and obvious offenders

    grains, caffeine, raw veggies, milk

Bacon!! (Most foods with high salt content) affect my other half something awful.

but again it is different for every person!

IBS is non-existent for me once I stay away from wheat. I gave up all grains at the time initially which may have promoted some kind of healing but wheat is something that triggers instant digestive upset when I eat any amount of it.

It's weird because now I can eat things that I thought I couldn't like raw vegetables and spicy food.

I am in agreement with the wheat, I dont know my own tummy these days now I have given up. Its great. Saying that I will have whole wheat bread the odd time and it doesnt harm me but if I eat it often or go near white bread it really affects me.

Thanks for all the replies everybody! I am going to give up bread for a while and see how I get on. I usually have special k for breakfast, it's handy for work, should I avoid that?

So awesome not to look pregnant after eating too :)

Yes, I would for a while anyway and see does it help you. I eat oats, eggs or yogurt but in some cases dairy really sets it off or the oats would because its high fibre which is bad for some sufferers. It really is trail and error to see what sets you off, but wheat is a very common cause. maybe keep a note book and see what makes your symptoms worse. I used to think it was dairy for me but I stopped eating bread and I am eating much more dairy then I used to and I am much better. My dad is the same and he has much improved from giving up bread altough he is much worse then me, he cant eat sauces or anything which he is not sure of.

I would avoid over processed food like special K anyway its not good for your stomach. Try and have something plain that doesnt upset you.

    Thanks again!

That egg muffin recipe sounds good, will def try that.

Any good books or websites that i should look at? I am clueless when it comes to food! Is wholemeal different to wholewheat bread?

Bumping this thread as I've been recently diagnosed myself and I'm suffering pretty badly... I've stopped eating eggs and some fruits as they affect me really badly but as to what I should be eating I've no idea.

Would love to know if anyone has a book of recipes or a book that gives good tips and information regarding what to eat, exercise etc etc...

    Thanks

I've suffered with this pretty much all my adult life, and like some others here, I gave up wheat a year ago. I cant say Ive been perfect since, there are still some irritants I havent eliminated, but removing wheat has had a very positive effect on the condition. Took away about 80% of the symptoms.

Right now I know that if I eat refined sugar or cream I will suffer for it. So Pavlova is out. :)

Cutting down on wheat definitely helped me, as did getting more exercise which in turn contributed to managing my stress levels. In fact i can't emphasise enough how much it helped when I joined a gym and started getting a good bit of exercise, did more for me than any change to my diet. In fact I've been on holidays and haven't had much exercise, and I definitely notice a difference (for the worse).

Try keeping a food diary to see if you have any particular triggers, though personally I tried that and found that the same foods would affect me differently depending on the day, I could feel ill after a slice of toast or some vegetables one day, yet a few days later eat the same thing and be fine. I definitely think wheat can contribute to bloating etc so it might be something to try cutting out or down on.

Peppermint tea might give you a bit of relief and if you haven't been prescribed something, Colpermin which you can get over the counter might be useful.

Colpermin is great. Also reducing stress in your life really helps.

Wheat really affects my IBS too, but I find it really hard to not eat it :( Does anyone have any easy recipes that are wheat free? I find it hard not to have a meal that doesn't have bread or pasta etc.

I'd really appreciate any help :o

There's a really nice gluten free bread mix that doesn't upset my tummy.

Glebe farms is the brand. It's just rice, tapioca and baking soda. You have to toast it and it's best when you make little muffins out of it.

Rice noodles are an easy substitute for pasta. Failing that pile your plate with veg, can't go wrong. It is very hard to kick wheat initially but you really won't look back when you get into the swing of it.

I found it in evergreen health food store in Galway. It's the only one I've found that doesn't have gut-irritating ingredients.
