Drinking on your own

What do you think of this? I do, of course, like to drink socially with friends as in my opinion these are the best times but there are other times where I like to just relax with a few beers and watch a film on the laptop.

Do you ever drink on your own? If so, how often do you do it? If not, what do you think of people who do?

(I'm not talking about full-blown reclusive drinking with no contact with the outside world, I'm talking about the odd few cans while watching a film etc).

(and for the smart-arse bastards - I'm talking about alcoholic drinks here)

Its a bit sad really isn't it?

I prefer hosting a mannequin party. The pizza delivery guy always gives me an odd look though.

Yeah. I feel I can really loosen up around myself after a few drinks.

I couldn't sit in and have one or two drinks by myself. As soon as the first drop hits me tongue it always puts me in the mood for going out to chase gee.

What if you're drinking socially around female relatives?

And why have I asked this question?

Love a nice beer or whiskey with the feet up on my tod watching a movie or gaming a bit, i do this every 1-2 weeks, very relaxing and will do it till the day i die no matter what other people opinions are. it's all about what will people think when it comes to irish mentality, bloody ridiculous.

The odd time when I'm watching football or something. Only a few cans, though. Wouldn't be getting locked or going on the shots like.:pac:

Regularly. I just love beer and wine so much. But sometimes I get absolutely smashed alone, which I know is bad, and am trying to stop that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

I used to do it pretty often. You ever just know a film is gonna be funnier if your drunk?

Its totally fine and you're not alone if your texting or talking to people online :D

Sh&t now i've gone and thought about this......i might have a problem!

Used to do it at least once a week. It brought out the best in me while writing (i.e. the most tragic). But also ended up with me falling asleep on the keyboard and/or being found the next morning by my little sister who would panic my mother into thinking I was dead.

Oh, and once I wrote a Bebo blog that I instantly regretted upon waking. Basically, I had listened to a younger girl in work ranting about her fella. She was in her first relationship and was so naive, but I kept my mouth shut despite wanting to scream. Until I hit Bebo with my pal Bulmers. I then loosely brought up a 'random situation' - that directly mirrored her very specific problem - and gave my full, uncensored thoughts on the matter. Quite embarrassing.

Of course, I was a serious alcoholic at the time.

Since I've gone back on the booze, I've done it maybe twice in 18 months?

Wouldn't rule it out, it has it's merits for sure. But you need to find a place to fit lonely drinks into your life without it being...pathetic. And that's a fine line.

Its a bit sad really isn't it?

It's only sad if you're someone who drinks to fit in when they're out, or to get pissed. Plenty of people like the taste of booze, and find it a nice way to relax.

I don't drink much, but I have drunk at home with no-one else around. Last time I did it my parents had come home from holliers and brought me some of the local brews and I had at them. I didn't bring 'em to a friends place as I'd have had to share them then.

I've also drunk when playing online multiplayer games. There's nothing like getting pissed while talking over voicecomms and messing up other people's games. In fact the ability to take such actions jovially is usually a prerequisite of most of the people I play online with.

Im drinking on my own right now. Had 4 cans in the fridge and decided to drink them whilst watching the football. I enjoy having a few cans watching TV and do it a couple of times a week. I dont care if people see it as strange. I enjoy myself so thats all that matters

every thursday, friday & saturday i'll have a few cool beers whilst gambling on-line, watching sports or playing poker.

its nice having nobody to annoy you when drinking

I cannot stand being alone if i am intoxicated, i find it very depressing.
I could do other stuff alone no problem, just not alcohol.

Sometimes I come home after a stressful day, sit and open a bottle of beer.
Its called distressing and it helps. I don't see the problem.

Having a pint in the pub while waiting for someone to arrive is ok.

Especially if she has big boobs.

I've done it a few times myself, not something I'd be conscious of doing at all. Don't feel odd about it. if i did it more often i'd probably question why I do, but nah. been thinking lately I'd like to go sit in a nice pub for a bit and read my book, now I'd be a little more self conscious of doing that, but probably will some day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Sometimes go to the pub for a pint on me own to either watch some sport or else read the paper....no biggy really!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,773 ✭✭✭madma

    good thread OP

I have done the odd time like watching football or if heading out I used to drink cans while getting ready and then meet friends in town or somewhere local but the was when living at home and in late teens..

So not really but every now and then, nothing wrong with it, always would prefer not too Though as it's boring on your own

Come summer still got like 2 & 1/2 boxes of it  Just think it's too depressin drinkin on your own. Even with the GF or a mate would just sip on it basically as don't see the point unless theres a party or ur headin out. Depressin on your own

You do know that it is possible to drink without becoming intoxicated?

You do know that it is possible to drink without becoming intoxicated?

My problem is that i can enjoy one or two nice bottles of beer or a glass of wine during the week in front of TV.
But also that can snowball into 2 bottles of wine or 8 beers if I have that type of ammunition lying around :(.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Naikon

Drinking alone is fine every once in a while. One of the only times you can really contemplate your mere spec of an existence, alone with just your own head. Not too often though, how else are you going to hold down a routine?

Worrying about drinking on your own is only a problem if you actually give a toss what most people think about you. Stop worrying about what other people think about you. It's really liberating. You have an obligation not to hurt friends/family. Not everyone will like you!

I hate the mentality of: having a few drinks alone= Alco!

Going out at the weekend, necking back shots, peeing and puking in the street: you are just having a laugh/ being social.

If you are drinking responsibly why would it matter if you are doing it by yourself?

It really shows an immature attitude towards alcohol to see drinking alone as some manner of taboo.

I never drink on my own except if I was getting ready to head out/waiting for people to come over/waiting for someone in a pub. But I only drink when heading out i.e. a binger

This is why we as a nation have such an unhealthy attitude toward drinking.

I would probably drink alcohol most days. I'll crack open a bottle of beer in the evening after a hard days work and enjoy the taste, I might even have two. I would rarely go out and drink 20 pints on a Friday/Saturday night.

It seems to be more acceptable to sink 20 pints in one sitting then over the course of a week or two.

Drinking alone isn't an issue as far as I am concerned unless you are getting pissed on a regular basis and using it as some sort of escape.

I see no problem with drinking at home alone unless you are drinking just to get plastered which is a different thing. I'd often open a bottle of wine on a Friday after work. Dinner, sofa, remote, bottle of wine = Perfect evening.

Used love going for a pint on my todd, read a paper and watch the tv, no bloody small talk to annoy me :). Now I have 2 kids and the closest I get to a bottle is 7 ounces of Aptimal formula for the youngest :D...

I'm drinking an ould can of guinness at the moment as I write this, you cant beat it a few pints every now and again.

The pubs are too dear now its crazy €3 - €5 a pint, you can't beat relaxing at home with a few cans :D

the only problem I have with drink is the Offie's close at 10 LOL

I don't drink much but its always when you'd like 1 you'd forget to buy em:mad:

    I drink about 10 - 12 cans a week

Might go to the pub once a week, and normally on a weekday evening for a few.
Have a drink everyday at home, might only be one bottle but nothing better than coming home from work and standing out in my back garden having a bottle and a fag and thinking, "ahh I'm home".
I love beer but I rarely drink enough to get me drunk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭Northern Monkey

I would have a beer when watching a movie or gaming online, but I don't think I would go into a pub to have a drink by myself unless I was meeting someone and waiting for them to turn up.

My work used to entail living in hotels a lot of the time around EMEA, so unless you wanted to spend the night staring at the 4 walls, you went down to the bar(sometimes you explored the city you were in, but sometimes you were just braindead from work). So you'd have a few on your own there, then have a meal. But, I did like Sunday's where I would get in a pile of papers & spend the day in a quiet pub going through them, not saying boo to anyone..

    Don't mind it at all.

In fact, I quite like it when I have the house to myself of an evening, especially if it's a weekend. Like to get a Chinese delivered, have a few cans of lager and a bit of peace and quiet watching the spanish football. :o

This thread title, if it could be scrunched into one word, would have been my response to the "in one word describe your day" thread.

'Alky' doesn't really fit. But drinking alone in the dark certainly does end my days on occasion...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

I do it most weekends and sometimes on weeknights too. Usually just a glass of whiskey or a couple of bottles of beer but last night I got a bit fairly wrecked.
I rarely get drunk though so I don't see any problem. I just really really like whiskey and ale.
