Overweight, in late teens, want to get in good shape, build muscle y'know. I don't have any weights apart from two 5kg dumbells which I can make into one 10kg one, also have another 2 5kg dumbells that I can't switch.

I could do press ups and use my bodyweight, as I have plenty of it ;) 15 and a half stone, 5 ft 10/11.

Anyone got a diet I could try, doesn't matter what it is, as long as it'd help.

jesus someone asks for some advice and this is the attitude they get?

OP if its just a diet to go on try something like weight watchers. I did it and lost over 7 stone in just over a year. You can do it online if you dont want to have to go to the meetings.

    best of luck

I want someone to give me a guidline diet, i.e breakfast monday - weetabix with low fat milk or whatever.

Thanks for the very helpful reply. :)

Post what you eat on a typical day and we can advise you on what to drop and what to add. I imagine you would probably need to cut out the junk food, lower the carbs and up the protein intake.

The Nutrition and Diet forum has tonnes of queries just like your own, and is a resource that I recommend you use.

As for your your training, ideally you should join a gym and start doing compound lifts, i.e squats, bench press and deadlift as these are unparalled for burning fat and building muscle.

If joining a gym really is not an option (remember there are cheap ones out there!), then I suggest doing the previously mentioned lifts using your body weight and holding dumbells and throw in some pullups and pushups.

surely a diet to lose weight for a person doesn't need customising?

I'm no expert but to start off I'd say join a gym. Weights at home just dont do it for me, everyones different though I guess. You're a student so it should be nice and cheap:D
Try to go at least 3 days a week. Get them to make you a program.

For diet I'd say to start off try and cut down on carbs you're consuming. If you want to eat, eat something with lots of protein. Chick, Fish, Turkey, Lean meat. All really nice foods :P Nuts too are great to snack on.
You could even go out and buy some whey protein and drink one of them instead of carbs all the time. Some of them taste great.
If you can get into the habit of going to the gym over the course of a month or so, you'll roll all downhill from there.
    Go for man!

He wouldnt be the first to request this, and folks round here are usually more than happy to help.

Everybody has different calorie requirements; you’re BMR and activity levels are all factors which must be calculated. And that’s just one point.

There is some good starting advice for you below. Draw up a diet and come back for critique.

I’m happy to help as well, and regularly do. But there’s a difference between advise and hand-feeding someone the information when they've done no homework themselves at all.

Usually the Health and Fitness forum is the first stop for newbies doing their "homework".

Yes asking for it all to be laid out is a bit of a shortcut, but why not? as far as I am aware there are no research requirements to be met before advice is granted.

Now c'mon OP, post that diet and let us rip it to shreds.:D

    I don't really have a diet :L

maybe start with a bowl of rice krispies and tea, I'd then be hungry before dinner and eat something i could find in the press like maybe a bun or a bar or a yogurt, dinner then would be maybe steak beans and potatoe, or shepards pie, sometimes then id have a muffin and ice cream for dessert (yummy :P) or a mug of tea and some plain biscuits or something, then I don't know what i'd have for tea, anything that I could eat, maybe a toasted cheese sandwich or something along them lines.

Breakfast: Drop the rice krispies, pure sugar, so obviously a no-no

have a bowl of porridge instead or even better start the day with eggs.

Lunch Are you saying you don't eat again until dinner??
don't do that, have a chicken salad for example or have some spinach, brown rice and whatever meat you fancy.

Dinner: eat plenty of veg and of course your protein source of choice; chicken, turkey, ham, salmon, tuna, steak etc
beans are not great but then again not the worst thing.

as for all the buns, bars, muffins, biscuits and ice-cream, I think you know that they have to go. If you must then do so in moderation, but I'd advise going for fruit and nuts instead of snacking on junk.

    Don't skip meals.

    Eat often and eat clean.

This is just a rushed guideline as to what a healthy diet should look like.
As I said before, visit the Health and Fitness section and you will find a wealth of information.

Everything you are currently eating is crap and the reason you are overweight.
losing weight is mostly diet, you need to eat better foods, less sugar, less processed foods and less junk.
I'd also guess hat you need to eat smaller portions

I'd suggest getting a gym membership somewhere and finding a workout on either bodybuilding.com or muscleandstrength, you'll find good workouts on both, bodybuilding.com has some decent diets too as far as i know, if you start going to the gym keep your daily calories low but with a lot of protein, chicken is quite good as it has LOADS of protein and quite few calories, mackeral is also good except it will have a good bit more calories than chicken but will also be a lot cheaper, a protein shake would be good as well but make sure you use water instead of milk (it will probably taste rank with water but milk has a lot of calories although you could use low fat milk), you can't go wrong with eating fruit although bananas have a lot of carbs, obviously stay away from fried food and the like.

I'm sure bodybuilding.com will have some good detailed diets.
If you train properly and have a good diet you should be able to lose weight but you have to keep at it, you won't get the results you desire in a month but keep your goal in mind and you'll get there :)

    This is spot on

There's a **** load of bad info (along with some good info)already been given out in this thread. The reason the OP should do their own research before asking is so they can filter between the good & bad. Excercise & diet is confusing (when it shouldn't be) enough for someone without been given a load of conflicting advice.

OP as mentioned before, read the stickies.
The 1st thing you need to do is clean up your diet. If you replace what little you eat with healthy food you're already on the right track.

the stickies say what to eat, like nuts or whatever blah blah blah.
I want someone to give me a guidline diet, i.e breakfast monday - weetabix with low fat milk or whatever.

According to the quote above you know what to eat already.

    You've been given a guideline
Breakfast: Drop the rice krispies, pure sugar, so obviously a no-no

have a bowl of porridge instead or even better start the day with eggs.

Lunch Are you saying you don't eat again until dinner??
don't do that, have a chicken salad for example or have some spinach, brown rice and whatever meat you fancy.

    Don't skip meals.

    Eat often and eat clean.

Insert info from the stickies because you've allegedly read them into the guidelines in the 2nd quote & you'll be doing even better. You wont need to be spoon fed the info.
Add small clean snacks such as fruit or nuts or both into Mauricmo's eating plan & you'll be eating more often & clean.

If your eating schedule looks like this:
    Breakfast
    Snack
    Lunch
    Snack
    Dinner
    Snack
Follow this with a timeline of every 2- 3 hours
After a few weeks (give it atleast a month) you'll notice a massive difference. In the mean time read up on different aspects of healthy eating eating plans & weight loss such as (mentioned before) your BMR, total calories burned, activity level, macro/micro nutrient level break down etc.

The only supplements you should be considering at this stage would be a good quality multivitamin & good quality fish oil.

You can figure out the rest with a bit of reading

I know this has been said many times but i'll say it again. If you really wanna change, a diet is not the only thing you need to change it's your lifestyle.A change diet is almost always temporary and then you slip back to old habbits. You have to get in a day to day routine that you enjoy.
Recently I've started using an app on my itouch called fitnesspal and it really helps. It's a very easy calorie tracker that really helps maintain your calorie deficit. It really motivates you to work out since you can physically see the amount of work youve done by the amount of calories youve burned.
