No confirmed dates for RTÉjr/RTÉ1+1 yet.

Black Briar posted some weeks ago that May 11th was to be the official launch date, again nothing officially confirmed.

RTÉ 2 HD will have HD programming from launch with up to 40% HD content by Sept, this according to RTÉ
RTÉ plans to have RTÉ Two showing High Definition (HD) sports, movies and drama programming as part of its schedule from the formal launch of the SAORVIEW in May 2011 (RTÉ Two HD Select). By September 2011 RTÉ anticipates that approximately 40% of the content on RTÉ Two will be in HD.

Source: RTÉNL Saorview FAQ (Mar 2011)

No further channels planned atm but the BAI did seek expressions of interest for the spare FTA capacity on the RTÉ Muxes at the end of Feb, report was to be submitted to the Minister following the consultation. No further information since. (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056195645)

channel 8 is now saying programmes start at 1900

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

And the epg for the other test (although I believe it's the same channel as such) says programmes start at 7am.

One of the test channels has three audio streams and the other one .... or so it seems here anyway :D

So at 7.00pm every weekday evening two of our new DTT channels will be showing a repeat of the "six one" news. (RTE one+1 and RTE News Now)

Nothing on my epg for channel 7 & 8, still displaying "Test Service" from Mullaghanish.

    Can someone confirm?

Yes, the RTE1+1 (presumably) test service is on black screen at the moment, and the EPG says "Programmes start at 19.00".

    Which transmitter are you using?

Odd, previously any changes were network wide. Still showing two test cards and "test service" from Mullaghanish and Woodcock Hill.

That's correct 3 audio streams on epg#7 test channel identified as English 2/0 (LyricFM), IRI 2/0 (RnaG) and NAR 2/0 (Tone). Epg#8 test channel has 1 audio stream - English 2/0 (Tone).

Also RTÉ 1 & 2, TV3, TG4 and 3e have recently started carrying an additional silent audio stream identified as NAR 1/0, for future AD (audio description) services?

i don't understand if these two stations ie. rte+1 and the childrens station are they not going to be on one channel eg channel 7 why are they testing two channels 7&8 if they are going to be split 11 to 7 and 7 to 2

As far as i know channels 7&8 are one stream but given separate epg numbers. It's like BBC THREE and FOUR which share the same stream as CBBC and Cbeebies on Sky. When the kids channels close at 7pm BBC THREE and FOUR start. I hope that explains it for you.

That's a bit unfair on people who only have Sky and don't want to pay out extra money for a half arsed half baked Saroiview digital system.

I agree Saorview is a very basic service at the moment but in time it will improve by adding new services. I'm sure RTE jr and RTE+1 will eventually make it on to Sky sometime in the future.

surely you mean free? as in no more money to Sky. ok you have to pay 50 quid up front for a STB if your TV is not compatible - 1 month subscription to sky!!

I find your attitude to Ireland's first Free Digital Service absurd - I along with countless users in Ireland am delighted with the service - When i combine this service with my Free To Air Satellite service i have an excellent Channel line up which is in many ways superior to $ky - ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, BBC3&4, C4HD, ITV-HD, BBC1HD and BBC HD, NHK World HD - And now the prospect of RTE2 HD - and more...

But what makes it even more superior is that it is ENTIRELY FREE!

That being said, Saorview is available to everyone in Ireland - You can take at advantage of this service if you wish - Aerials are available for as little as 20 euro,(10euro for indoor ones) and compatible (albeit not certified) boxes for as little as 65 euro - Surely if your a sky subscriber this is small penny's!

I doubt RTE or anyone else is blocking these going on sky, if sky want them.

€170ish (2 or 3 months sky subs) will get you DTT/ FTA Sat combo receiver. But it's Saorview that's ripping you!?!?

How so? Surely it is up to the all wonderful Sky to negotiate for these channels.

I don't know what you are expecting from DTT to call it half arsed.

Basically RTÉ "must offer" the channels to other platforms "as soon as practicable in accordance with the “must offer”/“must carry” obligations set out in the Broadcasting Act 2009".

It will be their choice to carry them.

Okay maybe I was a little over the top but the thing is I don't mind paying Sky for an excellent service as I can record everything at a touch of a button, if I could get a system that has freesat and Irish channels with a 7 day EPG then I would have no problem getting rid of Sky.

You can.... It requires the use of 2 set top boxes currently . . . i admit it is a slight drawback - BUT... with absolutely no monthly charges, all you need is the initial expense!

Freesat+HD Box available for 260 odd euro
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-500GB-Freesat-Satellite-Receiver/dp/B0039J42LM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305300235&sr=8-1

I would point out that this box is one of the more expensive available but it is considered the best: cheaper units available online for as little as 200 euro!

Freeview+HD box available and fully saorview compatible!
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sagemcom-RTI90-320-T2-HD-Recorder/dp/B003EIKYDS/ref=sr_1_26?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1305300507&sr=1-26

Again prices vary but it should be pointed out that if you enjoy recording, then this setup is superior to sky - Two boxes working in tandem will allow you to record 4 stations at once - 2 satellite and two Terrestrial!

With one major drawback, Saorview does not currently offer Series Link and at the pace at which they are currently moving ( Official Launch last Wednesday missed, RTE2 HD gone back to next September at the earliest, Saorview own EPG gone missing, etc ), GOD only knows when we will see Series Link activated. I too am waiting to ditch Sky, but not until I won't get the head chewed off me, for forgetting to manually record Fair City, due to no Series Link signal/data being sent by Saorview to a Freeview HD+ box !

you can still record fair city every day, without using series link - All that is required is a timer setting - This is fundamentally possible, all that is necessary is that you make sure fair city is starting at the correct time every day - this is a small price to pay for having zero monthly bills in my humble opinion

Will the Saorview (Nordig spec.) series link be compatible with a FreeviewHD+ (D Book spec.) PVR when it becomes available??? I don't think we have a Saorview certified PVR yet.

Last Wed's "Official launch" wasn't officially announced, it was only mentioned at a Saorview trade event last month.

According to the Saorview FAQ - HD content will be available from the public launch this month with 40% HD content by Sept.

The Saorview MHEG-5 epg looked crap when they tested it last Summer, much prefer the manufacturers built-in epgs (except Philips maybe). It would be a nightmare with one of the Lidl Silvercrest TVs.

This sums up the whole Sky sub debate at the moment. Why we would we Sky subscribers be so foolish as to fork out all that hard earned dosh every month, when there are 'free' alternatives available.

The fact is we pay for the convenience of having nearly all the channels we want to view on a single epg, and having one touch recording and series link.

It will be in Sky's interest to offer the new RTÉ channels, including RTÉ 2HD to it's irish customers, (with series link) as soon as possible. After all as a business, they don't just want to hold on to the existing customer base, they need to expand it.

If the 'free' alternatives offer equal or near equal convenience to the Sky box, then many will choose to invest the 'up front' expense to save on the monthly subs in the long term. But in my view that's some way off yet, many of us can't yet get Saorview at all, and so if we want the irish channels in digital quality, then for the interim, we go on subscribing.

I think you are paying SKY ar least €33 a month for that?

I have both a Freeview HD+ box and a Feeesat+ box, - ok 2 boxes, but a saving on SKY of €396 a year. No brainer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Saorview does not do series link yet. Many can't afford an outlay of €500 for two separate boxes plus potential install costs. Sky is €23/month or less if you are on a half price offer - much easier to digest, even though it will cost more in the long term.

Go buy a Pannasonic G20B TV which has a FreeviewHD (for Saorview) AND a FreesatHD tuner built in and then just connect up a USB Hard Disk. One TV, one remote, one solution. A TV and a Sky box will obviously be two boxes and two remotes.

As for the debate about Series Link, I know nothing about it but if a program is scheduled to start at 19:30 (Corrie) but actually starts at 19:27, does it start recording early ? Video Recorders years ago had the option to record programmes with PDC but I don't think this ever worked (or maybe it did if you set the start time for 19:30 and a programme started at 19:32)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭JDxtra

I'm not aware of any IDTVs that allow you to record one channel, and watch another. Series link allows to to record a whole series no matter what day/time it is on - probably the best feature of a dedicated PVR (Sky+ / Freesat+).

Many channels on Sky and Freesat send data to their boxes if a programme has a delayed (or early) start. RTE don't do this on any platform yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,272 ✭✭✭championc

Thankfully I'm not completely addicted or permanently couched in front of the TV so I seldom have instances where programmes clash. As more and more of the +1 channels appear, there are more chances of clashes disappearing. We all know that soccer matches take up alot of time but in fairness, with the majority on SkySports, then this doesn't enter into this discussion since this TV would be unable to tune into encrypted channels like SS. Anyone discussing Saorview and Freesat and the ditching of UPC sound to me like households of non-TV addicts and so, a TV of this kind is perfect for 95% of the time.

You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time.
