Unfit resistance training novice

Hi, bit of a fitness forum lurker.

I'm female, late 20s and I'm unfit. I've never at any stage been into fitness bar when I tried a few little exercises for a few weeks when I was 13, more out of curiosity.

I've read the Women and Weights thread and it was interesting but not very informative for a COMPLETE novice like me. Found myself a bit bamboozled. Lots of jargon.

How do I get started? I definitely can't afford a gym and not even sure if I can afford home exercise equipment.

Everything I look up on the net mentions exercises but not actually how to do them. I'd love something with written instructions for each exercise. Can anyone suggest anything? :)

    HELP!!! :)

Youtube can pretty good for looking up how to different exercises.

Maybe. I'd love to find exercise with well written, clear instructions.

Hey tarpina, it seems to be a common problem, and there are actually a few of us working on tackling some video and notes at the moment, so if there's anything in particular you'd like to see post it up.

In the meantime I'd suggest starting with some bodyweight exercises. There's a user here transform put together a useful beginner bodyweight circuit, I'll dig it up and link it in the morning if others haven't in the meantime.

Maybe take a look at the "tutorials" section in www.myomytv.com. There are tutorials on bodyweight exercises that don't need any equipment (burpee, squat, reverse lunge, pushup), as well as exercises using a kettlebell which would be a fairly cheap piece of equipment to buy. There are videos, but they're backed up by detailed written instructions with key points to watch out for.

There's loads of other stuff there too in the other sections of the website too, but I think the tutorials are closest to what you're asking for.

(Thanks to TommyKnocker from whom I originally heard of myomytv. Have to say I've been using it a lot since.)

Edited to add: Think this might be the video of Transform's that cmyk referred to above.

If you click on on the "show more" info bit just beneath any of Transform's videos in youtube itself (rather than just embedded versions like the one above), you can get more details of the exercises (reps etc.). Again, I've found these great over the past while to get a bit of variety rather than doing the same thing for months on end.

Just a thought but if you have Sky you should also check out the Active Channel (Sky 281)

I recorded a couple of shows featuring Danni Levy for my wife and she finds them very good and easy to follow. You can find them here too http://www.theactivechannel.com/search/index.php?search=danni&x=0&y=0

There isnt much in the way of weights, but it would be a very good way to starting conditioning yourself for more resistance training.
