Advice buying knee support

Short version is what kind of knee support should I buy for your typical kind of gym activities? I just want to try avoid or limit pain I often get in my knee.

Longer version is I have a gamy knee. I injured it jogging off-road in bad trainers several years ago. Despite being scarcely able to handle a step/stairs for a month the physio at the time said bruised cartilage/rest.

Years later it flared up when I started gyming. Since then I have sporadic pain at a 6-7/10 level sometimes when training, but also randomly when just walking or even sitting (even when I was out of training for a year the pain would flare randomly on the street or in front of the tv).

When brought on by training I'll be lame for a few days. Another physio recently said there's nothing wrong with me except the bad leg (my weak one) has much less muscle around the knee than my strong one for which I was given a bit of stretchy plastic ... I discarded the plastic and have been working on my quads in the gym.

As for the type of pain, its very sharp then dull and slow to fade, most pronounced to the side of the patella/top of the tib which is extremely tender, and I think its worst when brought on by lateral force or twisting.

So, what should I be looking for in a brace? Shopping online here. Will the cheapest thing do?

Have you seen the huge selection of knee supports on the market, different types for different injuries...your physio would be the best one to recommend a specific type for your knee...then it's a matter of finding the best value for that particular type.

you need state what sort or injury you have first

then get it assessed properly. physio and/or surgeon

what are you trying to do in the gym?? weights or cardio?

Can I ask, seeing as your knee injury was "several years ago" and to date it has not fully healed and flares up randomly, have you considered that the diagnosis from the first physio was wrong and looked for a second opinion?

How were you diagnosed in the first instance, X-Ray, MRI? Or did the physio just examine you and say it was a badly bruised cartilage?

If you were misdiagnosed, and there is something more wrong, then while strapping your knee may eliminate some/all of the pain, it may not help the underlying issue and worst case scenario, it may aggravate it even more. So my advice is that if you haven't already, get you knee checked out again from a different physio or knee surgeon before you go the strapping route. My motto is a ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure
