I hope Fergie doesn't go mad with the changes anyway.

    Predicted line-up:

    Lindegaard
    Fabio
    Smalling
    Vidic
    O'Shea

    Nani
    Gibson
    Anderson
    Park

    Berbatov
    Owen

Hope we rest few key players as Chelsea will be fresh with a week rest.

I would go with this team and also have someone like Obertan on the bench.
    VDS

    Fabio Smalling Vidic O'shea

    Nani Anderson Scholes Park

    Berba Owen

    United Team News;
Wayne Rooney missed Manchester United training on Tuesday with a hamstring complaint and faces a late fitness test ahead of the game.

Brazilian full-back Fabio will also be assessed closer to kick-off after picking up a knock.

Ryan Giggs sat out the defeat to Arsenal with flu but should be okay to return, while Dimitar Berbatov and Anders Lindegaard have been welcomed back into the squad after lay-offs.

Ferguson has revealed that Darren Fletcher will be involved after shaking off a virus.

The guy hasn't played in months (for a very good reason).

lol at the united fans posting fairly weak teams as if it's a foregone conclusion.

It's the semi finals of the champions league ffs, not the first round of the carling cup

With the exception of gibson ond obertan I dont think there has been and "weak" players posted and infairness to those two they'd prob walk into any mid table team in england

People are posting variations of Uniteds "second string team"

Our second string would beat most teams in England, so it's not lol-worthy at all.

I posted a predicted team I think Fergie will possibly play, not what I'd like to see. Tbh I'd play a pretty much full strength team for the first half and try to get a goal or two to finish Schalke off.

Any time we've made lots of changes, Fergie has ended up bringing on Giggs or Rooney to get the job done.

Still, we're at home and I can't see us not scoring.

Gibson yes, but Obertan? Onto the Newcastle team ahead of Barton or Guttierez? Or even the Villa team ahead of Downing or Young? I think not.

Anyway United to win, and Raúl to score. My prediction.

Like most people I would suggest a utd win. Before the first I leg I thought Schalke would cause alot of problems for utd but they were simply awful on the night. If they can reproduce some of the attacking football they are capable of, then they will make it a very interesting game ( on the night) but the 2 goal lead should ensure utd go through. I wonder how much of a 'second string' ferrgie will put out. There is of course chelsea on the horizon but too much change to the team might be counterproductive. His major worry of course would be injuries and suspensions with a look towards the final.
I'll be happy with a competitive game with both teams scoring - 2-1 utd maybe.

I think shalke will go all out attack tonight, utd will field a weakened team and it's not beyond the realm of possibility that shalke could score first.

    United need to concentrate.
No fannying around like against Arsenal or we could find ourselves making hard work of things tonight.

    Glazers Out!

Fact, but I think he'll start gibson and a few other players like that, fabio aswell, fabio is ok, but if we don't try and win the game and concentrate then there could be problems. Shalke can still score goals but if we don't have any threat going forward then Utd could be in some trouble.

Big night tonight after the capitulation on Sunday, we need to show we're not turning into push overs.
If Gibson can play like he did in the first half of the QF second leg last year for 90 minutes he'll be ok. Otherwise he could be a liablity if he starts.

I'm going to try to be positive as we have the two away goals from the first leg, lets just hope there's no refereeing howlers.

    Glazers Out!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,484 ✭✭✭Elbow

Go out all guns blazing and bury them with a goal or 2 in the first half, then think about giving a few of the lads a rest.

If we go out with weaker than normal starting 11 we're gonna be punished

We lost a game, its a little premature to be talking of capitulation and turning into pushovers is it not?

Schalke will have to up their game somewhat if they are going to score three, they will also have to go on the attack and leave themselve open at the back. United should do it.

    Schalke have nothing to lose
    League form means nothing
They destroyed Inter at the San Siro

    Really worried about this tie!

Shalke imo will go all out to score, and will leave themselves open, but lets hope we play some players who will counter attack, last sunday was slow when they got the chance

Seems to be quite a bit of panic about tonight. We have the experience to see this out and when you add this to our home form I think we will won and be comfortable with it.

Why not, they generally tend to help United out.

Based on the first leg United should stroll it...I reckon a comfortable 0-0, or 1-0 tonight. Would like to see Schalke take the lead though to make a game of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

Forget a weakened team, nothing's finished yet. Maybe the likes of Smalling in for Ferdinand and Owen and Berbatov in for Rooney and Javier (only because Fergie mentioned something like that). Rooney's definitely rested anyway due to a tight hamstring. Maybe give Fletcher a go in midfield to see how he does after his virus; but nothing hectic. Treating it like the tie is done and dusted is bollocks, other United fans should know better than that.

Only a Schalke goal early enough will make it interesting as a spectacle.

I think it'll be a low scoring match.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,763 ✭✭✭Jax Teller

    Evra should be rested IMO
Rafeal i hope will start at Rb and either Oshea or Fabio at on Lb .

Have a feeling Schalke might win this but we will still go through .

This is allegedly the team but unconfirmed.

Man Utd; Van Der Sar, Rafael, Evans, Smalling, O'Shea, Nani, Gibson, Scholes, Anderson, Valencia, Berbatov

Both Evans and Smalling starting would be a concern. Thought we were going with Owen and Berb but then Fergie doesnt always tell the truth!

That must be bull, at least I hope it is; there is no way we should be playing Smalling and Evans at centre back in the second leg of the Champions League semi final, no matter what the fecking score is.

happy with nani and valencia in, anderson if he's in the middle will slow the counter attack and gibson won't add to it anyways.

wouldn't like to see Smalling and Evans start ,either one plus Vidic would be better ,also would like to see owen play up top with berbs.

I wouldn't be too concerned tbh. I doubt they will be tested much. That 5 in midfield should be too strong for Schalke to get much of a foothold in the game.

I'd be much more confident about Evans and Smalling than I would about the Schalke centre backs.

The team is fine imo, it's the right thing to rest Rio and Vidic for Chelsea, no need to risk either of them imo.

I'm not surprised Owen isn't starting btw. I'm happier with the 4-5-1/4-3-3 rather than him starting.

only time will tell, but that team will certainly give Schalke more of a chance, I think it could well backfire. Schalke are in the semis of the CL - they can play football, just not the last day, the match just got a whole lot more interesting.
