Baked beans - friend or foe?

I've recently re-discovered my love of Batchelors Beans - God they're delicious! I've started eating them with dinner almost every night. Am actually mostly phasing out potatoes and I'm replacing them with beans.

But, it just seems too easy and I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing about these beans. I'm just getting the regular ones - not sugar free or anything, but I can't imagine there's anything bad about having them for dinner with, say, a load of veg, a chicken breast and maybe a small potato or a Waffle (I've also re-discovered Waffles - the Dunnes Stores own brand doesn't seem too unhealthy at all!).

What do you think? Can beans be a good dinner staple?

    Cheers!

Heinz are for losers. Beaney and Barney ftw. :D

I like beans myself. They're filling. I'm pretty sure legumes (beans) are not ideal nutritionally, but I've found they help to keep my appetite at bay when I'm trying to lose weight. I love, love, love a bowl of bachelors chilli beans with some grated cheese on top. Super filling meal that for very reasonable calories.

I wouldn't rate the oul' waffles though. Can't see them being any better than oven chips really.

You guys are mental. Batchelors Beans are king of all beans.

I hear Heinz beans aren't beans at all but are actually small pebbles which have been carefully painted orange.

Beaney and Barney beans don't actually exist and are really small, bean shaped figments of the imagination. Very little nutritional value in them at all.

This is what I hear anyway.

Actually, canned beans have lower antinutrients than soaked and cooked beans. The processed sugar-y sauce I wouldn't be crazy about but I wouldn't be losing sleep either if the rest of the diet is solid.

OP, why beans instead of potatoes out of interest? I'd pick potatoes myself.

<nutritionnerd> Potatoes contain 10% complete protein, which is very unusual for a vegetable. Irish people ate 4kg of potatoes a DAY prior to the famine </nutrition nerd>

my other half decided that we had to reduce the beans intake of my son as there were noticeable effects on the ozone layer  not to mention the smell ! Certainly only having them once or twice a week seems to have improved the situation. :D
