    Hey guys
I'm just going to post a log of my new build, this is my second build & my first time was a long time ago and I slightly cheated and got a bike shop to do some of it. But I’m hoping to do this all myself.
After "MONTHS" of waiting (10) and haggling I eventually got my frame ordered (crash replacement for a Top Fuel 98) and arrived the other day. See pictures below.

Below is a list of the components I’m looking to put with this.

    1. SRAM XX GXP Chainset 156 170mm 39.26
    2. SRAM XX Cassette 10sp 11-36
    3. SRAM XX World cup Carbon Mag Disc Brake Front & back 160mm with SRAM XX Mount Adaptor Front & Back IS 160mm
    4. SRAM XX Rear Derailleur Long Cage
    5. SRAM XX Trigger Shifter 10sp F&R Pair
    6. Avid XX Matchmakers (pair)
    7. SRAM 10sp PC1091R
    6. Rock Shox SID XX World Cup - Tapered Steerer 2011, 120mm travel

I’m going to be using some old parts from my previous bike too that should be still ok
    like the
    1. Bontrager XXX Stem
    2. Bontrager XXX handle bar
    3. Crank Brothers Cobalt XC wheels

*** I posted most of this on another forum a couple of weeks ago I’m at the stage now where all parts have arrived except the Front brake, so I can start putting it together shortly***

I think the first thing to add to the Frame has got to be the protection.
there is nothing worse than that first chip or scratch so I’m going to do all I can to minimize them.
so I got the Full Top Fuel protection kit from Frameskin.com (also got the kits for the XX Cranks and Sid Fork)

These are the wheels I’m going to use from my old bike Crank Brother Cobalt 26” wheelset I had only ridden them for two month before the last bike went out of action

    BikePartsmeasurements023.jpg

    BikePartsmeasurements021.jpg

Given that the new Fork ahs a 15mm thru Axle the front wheel need to be converted from 9mm Quick Release to 15mm , luckily Crank Brothers do a conversion kit

    BikePartsmeasurements002.jpg

    BikePartsmeasurements004.jpg

But once added axle goes in perfect, and quite an easy conversion to do

Keep us posted. I'd love to see more photos of this going together.

Very nice build you have there.

I'm trying to Blend some blue through out the bike so the wheels don't stand out as much as they do already against the black red & white frame so i got the followings bits (not much i know but also thinking of blue cables)

What's to stop you from getting started on the rest of the build? What's the total cost, if you don't mind me asking?

  • Registered Users Posts: 92 ✭✭Ronin2009

haha not quite, just the girlfriend ;-)

a mix of selling my old components on eBay and getting great deals from ChainReactionCycles (they will really come down on prices if you ring and haggle) and a trek distributor here in Dublin got a Great deal on the frame as part of a crash replacement program.
and of course a fair bit of saving up and a lot of waiting!

i'm still waiting on the Front break, my last piece! should arrive in a day or two.

once in i'm taking 2 days off work next week to put it together

That Sram Cassette is nearly too nice to put on the bike:)

I hope you didn't pay CRC by credit card

    2 days sounds very indulgent.

i think i'm at around 4800 - 5000 not including the wheels and things like stem/handle bar as i had them from the old bike

Wow thats a whole lot of XC racer right there!

I have a Fuel EX 8 myself and waiting delivery on my Remedy 9

No PayPal all the way, my CC company called me to confirm when they seen it was a CRC PayPal payment due to there "problems"... pity great company hope they sort it out soon

there are things like cutter the carbon fork steerer and maybe cutting the hoses on the brakes (hose cutter 80 quid not spending that!) if they need doing i won't risk it myself
so second day is a "just in case day" :)

(crash replacement for a Top Fuel 98)

What happened there - did you write it off?

A pair of Wellgo flats on that bike would be .... unusual.

I love the XX groupset, and that back block is a machined piece of beauty. Best of luck with the new bike and have fun building it.

the old bike was a Trek Top Fuel 98
where the carbon and metal meet in the rear triangle by the chainstay separated.
it should have been a warranty replacement but i was not the orignal owner in their eyes :(

I had a temp carbon epoxy fix on it for a while but thought it was time to upgrade

as for the pedals i tend to agree :S the wellgo's where bought spur of the moment.

can anyone recommend a nice pair of flats that would compliment the bike? i like to have a pair of both flats and clip in

    Thanks Mark

When i was researching for the build, I was annoyed by the fact it was hard to find detailed pictures of frames and parts and i personally love threads with alot of pictures.
So i decided i would do the threads and take pictures of absolutely everything!
Hopefully it can help someone else out looking to make a decision

if anyone would like to see more detailed pictures on the frame or parts or even measurements let me know

hmm CRC Website says the DMR V12s weight in 536g
whereas the wellgo magnesuims i have are about 186g plus looks and shape wise are similar

    I think he was joking.

Sure why do you want flats anyway, you're not going to be riding to the shops on it are you? :p
