I think I have a rotten memory compared to other people I know, and I think it would be great if that part of my brain could be augmented, as long as it stayed under my control. I don't want memories coming back in to my consciousness unless I actively want them back. I think human forgetfulness has its uses: it allows time to heal mental wounds, and move forwards with our lives rather than remain stuck in the past.

Yeah, this is a well-grounded and known phenomenon. My take is that people with outstanding memories are sort of continually "refreshing" the information with their neurons. You know how some quote or memory comes to us sometimes? It seems that people with very strong memories are continually being revisited with these memories.
