2011 CAO/Leaving Cert discussion thread

    Mod Note:

As with every year, there's obviously going to be a whole load of leaving cert/CAO/college choice discussion so I figured I may as well start a thread for everything college related. So feel free to ask questions, rant, moan, celebrate or whatever in here :)

    Kateos2

Clearly none of us are taking these exams seriously. So much for the stress and denial going away after the Leaving Cert. College is waaaay worse. Well in terms of academic sides.

Depends on what course your doing :P Must update the CAO actually... :( Scary stuff...

Well as I'm from Limerick I'd say hit UL. You won't beat the craic in UCC though :p Business in UL is supposed to be a laugh if you like business. and all my friends go there. The craic and mayhem they have is crazy. Go with your gut though. Always leads you in the right direction :D and btw...I had OT down as well. Tough hours from what I've heard. But do whatever you feel you'll enjoy more.

Ah yeah I LOVE Limerick and I'm fairly certain I'll go there.. Dunno whether I'll stick with Business or not though. Maybe Law or something.. >_<

Relax and you'll be fine :) No point in gettin too stressed out. You'll figure out what you wanna do in good time. Sure I dont know what I wanna do. Part of me wants to go do Arts now. Missed the deadline and now I'm either stuck repeating first year or dropping out.

Can't you reapply through the CAO?

Of feck. I should really have a look at my CAO too. Feels weird to be doing it all again, can't fupping wait. Am I going to be the only C&Her in DIT?

Yea, I have the points for internal transfer. I'm asking around about it anyway.

That sucks :\ I thought the CAO late application didn't close this early - last summer, I applied for a course in UL some time after 2nd year of my old course had finished. However, I can't remember whether I applied through the CAO or by applying directly to UL - I have a feeling that it was the CAO, but all I can remember was contacting UL about a deferral :S

At any rate, contacting the college to see what options are available to you would seem like the best thing to do right now.

Lads, is there somewhere that has a list of CAO important dates? Like closing dates, and when the offers and stuff are out?

The very day I kind of think I want to drop out a CAO discussion starts up... An omen perhaps?

Kate, I think on the CAO website there's an important dates section. On my phone now so I can't check but I think there is! :)

You can do Law through Business, but there's an AWFUL LOT of work and misery in Law. Talk to someone who does Law in UL before you commit.

Got to put a link up for Randy's thread in the LC forum as it does contain a load of useful and helpful information

    This.

I love it really but I'm due a mental breakdown before May 20th!

Law is interesting and a really great subject but it is a seriously demanding subject though.

Software Development in LIT for me :D Hopefully I'll have accrued enough money over the summer to get a laptop and various bits n' bobs :)

    Ooh cool. :)

I'll hopefully get the HEAR scheme, my brother did, so hopefully I will too, which seems like a great addition to the college experience! :)

My HEAR orientation week was one of the most enjoyable weeks ever! Hope you do get on it Noel :) Going to be a leader at it this year for all the new little NUIM students :p

I'm not totally decided on which course I'm doing yet. It's definitely going to be DIT Cathal Brugha Street though. At the moment I'm leaning towards the 4 year culinary arts degree, which if the points don't change then I'm fine.

Although I may just go for Culinary Arts (professional practice) which is a 2 year level 7 course I think, you can get into second year of the degree once you've completed that. I've something like 150 points to spare for that, so I can't see there being issues in that aspect. There's also a similar course in ITT, but that'd be really awkward to get to for me.

Then there's Baking and Pastry Arts management in DIT too. That sounds awesome, and would be what I'm currently interested in. But then I'd be afraid that if I went into that I'd be pigeon holing myself too much.

So yeah at the moment it's looking like the BA in Culinary Arts (hopefully)

I met somebody, a friend of a friend, who was doing Culinary Arts last year and she said she absolutely loved it. From what she said about it, or more from how enthusiastically she said it, it sounds great Kate.

Yeah I hear it's pretty unreal for making new friends and stuff! My brother got it last year and he made friends in that week who remain to be some of his actual best friends now!

Aww really? I'd love to do the leader thing if I got the opportunity, it's great to be able to help back after the help they offer the students like! :)

Edit, also @Kate, if you're worried about not knowing people I can get my friend to add you on Facebook? :) Like just if you're worried about it or anything! She's hoping to go to DIT too to study Clinical Management! Even if you want to later on in the year or whatever, feel free to ask! She's lovely and would love to know someone too I'd imagine!

Yeah anyone I've talked to who has done it or is doing it seems to absolutely love it. My brother knows a few people in it so I was chatting to them about it a while ago. I adored the college at the open day too, and I'll get my own fancy knives and uniform (is it bad i'm nearly most excited about the uniform?).

Still no regrets whatsoever about leaving UCD :)

What put me off NUIM a bit was the fact that that was compulsory. I got DARE and to be honest, I didn't like the way you had to do it otherwise they withdrew their offer.

Like I have said before; College isn't just solely about the course you do, it is about getting involved and having a good time because your time in college is pretty short and does go quickly, so you have to make the most of it

I'm pretty sure the orientation week isn't compulsory for DARE students in Maynooth? It wasn't back in my day  I would still recommend that DARE students go to it though (I was one myself too) because having that extra week to get used to campus is good for someone with a disability/SLD :)

HEAR is a joke and a 1/2 i have dyslexia and a very bad forum of it and they told i was not dyslex i missed out by 0.1 in one of my tests and i ended up in CIT or UCC because of that

Also then i found out that i was not tested right eg only 3 tests post to be 8 tests so your man who tested me baicly destroyed my 1st year in college

Also the Access office is a joke in CIT i had to get a interview just to get the grent for it but you cant use it on anything ! also i went to the opening day for it in CIT and was a bigist waste of time ever when you found out that you got the must points out of 50 or so people and the only one doing a LV 8 at it

I have been moving to multimedia for 1/2 a year now and still dont have a clue what i am doing in the new school year because i got the points but to move is a joke. I be lookey to have everything set up at this speed

So when you do your CAO know what your putting down on it
