Few questions on protein shakes

Im going to the gym for a while now, doing a lot of compound exerciess, some weights and cardio.

Not getting into my routine as its not relivant to my question, just assume my routine is ok for purposs of the post.

Each day I try to do the 1g of protein per lb of body weight, and i do this with normal food alone, no shakes or suplements. Lots of eggs, lots of chicken and lots of beef. I try to keep my carbs down to a minimum.

Unfortunately instead of putting on mass i just get very very lean. I cant really eat much more a day so im thinking i need a better method of getting protein, and shakes seem to be the best method. So my questions are:

    1. Are protein shakes an easier way to get protein?
    2. Can you recommend any of the off the shelf protein supplements from lifestyle sports or holland and barret (basic protein, no creatine)?
    3. is it cheaper to do shakes than to buy all the meat, eggs etc that you would otherwise need to get the same quantity of protein?

first of all, yes it is cheaper to take shakes to improve your protein and carb intake. they also make it easier to consume a large amount of protein in one go usually 20g per scoop give or take depending on brand.

i personnally wouldn't buy protein powder off the shelf as variety is limited and a lot more expensive than online.
however..H&B usually stock two main brands one being precision enginered- a basic cheap protein although sevierly lacks quality and tastes like sh*t. the other brand is maximuscle which is the complete opposite. its basic protein is promax high in quality but very expensive..twice as dear as the latter!! i personally would recommend buying online like at monstersupplements.com where you can get good protein powders like phd etc for a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for the response! very helpful.

I visited maximuscle.com and the choice is overwhelming.

I want to avoid anything with Creatine, and just want good basic protein with some required vitimans and minerals for putting on a bit of lean mass.

based on this, what is recommended?

Ive read that this is decent, very cheap protein. anyone have any reason why this one is not so good?

i would reccomend a whey isolate over concentrate as it is absorbed faster and has better quality. isolate is preferably taken immediatly post training to replenish the body and aid in recovery.

i would also recommend to take a multi vit (even on none training days) such as:

You need lots of complex carbs: oats, rice, pasta etc and in large quatities

Instead of having three main meals try to break it down to five or six per day. There is no point in consuming vast amounts in one sitting when it won't be utilised, the aim would be to continually feed your body throughout the day with a constant supply of those vital amino acids. Of the food you do eat, it would be beneficial to take some sort of digestive enzymes to utilise all that you eat. That said, your diet does not seem excessive, so it really is about getting more of everything into you.

sorry but thats not all that much, get a 2 scoop shake in before lunch, 1 after and when you stop gaining another before bed. Or meat, whatever grabs you.
Bottom line, you eat only 3 meals a day(snacks are only getting in the way killing hunger when you need to eat more)
Milks good though chug it back!
