Post your list of singers who in your opinion can't really sing.
Firstly I apologise to any fans of the artists I've listed. Just because they are named here does not mean I don't enjoy their music. I just don't believe they are very talented vocally.
    My list is;

    1. Will i am (and the rest of the BEP for this matter)
    2. Jedward (both of them)
    3. Ke$ha
    4. Victoria Beckham
    5. Madonna
    6. Johnny Cash
    7. Bob Dylan
    8. Britney Spears
    9. Matt Cardle
    10. Ronan Keating

You can do 5 or 10, whichever suits. I just did 10 because I can say anything about any of the above 10.

I'd agree with that, but I do think matt cardle can sing. Johnny cash isn't too bad either.

No I mean singers who don't have great vocal ability in your opinion.

You may like or dislike the singer. I only wrote this because I didn't want any fans of my list to be insulted.

I think its more to do with vocal ability and sound deliverance as opposed to song meaning, emotions, etc. I think Dylan is an exceptionally gifted artist but I do sort of agree his voice can grate at times. And other times it's 'great', depends on the song :)

Hmmm not sure if I agree with Johnny cash..

Definitely agree with Ian Brown...as much as I love him.

Caught that Rhianna one on xfactor one night and was shocked at how bad it was:eek: Cheryl Cole's another one that is really poor.

Think its only when you see them live that you really get an idea of how weak/strong someones voice is, but thankfully most artists I check out are as good, if not better in person than on record!

Edit: oh and just remembered Anthony and the Johnsons..cannot go his voice! Also find that Janice Joplin in her later years grates on my ears...but then again that comes back to delivery vs technique again doesn't it..

Would have to agree with this - with the caveat that this is an entirely subjective thing but just to take one example - there is a line in "Only A Pawn In Their Game" where Dylan sings "They lowered him down as a king...." and the anger/respect/dignity that he manages to shoe horn in there never fails to give me tingly spine shivers.... I don't think vocal ability is everything in singing.

Noel Gallagher is a pretty good singer in terms of hitting and holding notes etc, there's a difference between a good singer and a good voice. Liam gallagher for example isn't a particularly good singer but he has a good voice.
Neil Young is similar to Noel, but they're excellent songwriters and there's always something refreshing about a song writer singing their own songs

Surprised Morrisey hasn't been mentioned yet. And despite the fact that he's the lead singer of my favourite band, I would have to admit that David Byrne can't really sing.

    Bob Geldof

Britney Spears - can actually sing pretty well but chooses not to, which baffles me.

Ke$ha and Cheryl Cole are the other two that come to mind. Janet Jackson voice doesn't really equate to her success either even though I do like it.

I also disagree with the person who said Mariah Carey... I think her voice is extraordinary.

Some of my favourite singers of all time can't really sing:

    Lou Reed
Nico (probably could be argued that she could sing well in a low range, just didn't have any high range whatsoever!)
    David Byrne
    Leonard Cohen
Captain Beefheart (though I read somewhere that he had a five octave vocal range, so he probably could sing properly; he just chose not to! On some songs from Safe As Milk he sounds like he really can sing.)
    Kim Gordon
    Bobby Gillespie

His voice sounded shot on the last three records, his attempts to scream were rendered squawks, but it worked.

He was some whistler, the end of Harry Irene is a good example.

Can't believe someone mentioned Bono as someone who can't sing.
Are you mad, Bono has an amazing range, listen to some of the high notes he hits, the ending of "With or Without You", "Pride", "Streets", "Vertigo" to name but a few.
Noel Gallagher is also another very good singer, some people are just idiots

    Complete lunacy tbh!

    Ke$ha plus a thousand - hasn't a note in her head.

She can hold a note too.

    I'd go with Niall O'Flaherty :D

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Pixies, Ride, Therapy?, Public Service Broadcasting, IDLES, And So I Watch You From Afar

Gigs '25 - Spiritualized, Orbital, Supergrass, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Vantastival

Stephen Gately. Heard him live on TV and he was way off-key. Doesn't matter now of course
    Bernard Sumner
    Ian Brown
    Ronan Keating
Leonard Cohen/Bob Dylan/Tom Waits, though I regard them more as poets who try to sing
    Kurt Cobain
    Tim Wheeler
    Bob Geldof
    Frank Zappa

To be honest Id say that most of the people in the charts at the moment wouldnt have a career if not for AutoTune.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 485 ✭✭Deregos

I actually like these singer songwriters . . But alas they're not the best warblars.

    Anthony Keidis

    Johnny Lydon

    Frank Black

    Huey Morgan

    Julian Casablancas

    Tom Waits

    Iggy Pop

    Lou Reed

Jarvis Cocker (Richard Hawley has a much better singing voice)

Jim Morrison's voice was banjaxed toward the end.

And of coarse the bloke from Noah and the Whale whose name I can't be arsed to look up.

Stephen Gately is a half-decent singer. I do believe that he was the best singer in Boyzone because he could reach some high notes and Ronan was always left sqeeking in his boots trying to keep up. You can see this in songs like "No Matter What" and "Gave It All Away" the last song recorded by Steo before he died.

Danny O' Donoghue actually is very talented vocally. Some people don't like him though because he can be quite bland at times.
    MsJenjers wrote: »
    Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole is another person who can sing when she really tries. If you saw her on the Alan Carr show you will see the difference between herself and Britney Spears. I also feel Britney tries to sing worse, its because she gets so much grief and wants to show it in her music. Listen to "Happy Tears" on Cheryl's new album and you will see she can sing when she wants to.
    Bono

Bono can sing. In my experience its mainly just people who have issues with Bono who try to allege he can't sing. And he does reach some high notes in ""With or Without You".
    justin beeber
    noel gallagher

Justin Bieber yes until his voice breaks. Noel Gallagher is not the best singer but he has a good voice because he has potential with holding notes etc. but that doesn't mean he can reach the higher notes. Liam was a better singer but a worse songwriter.
    Deregos wrote: »
    Anthony Keidis

I would rate Keidis the same as Stephen Gately. He has it but can't hold notes for long enough. He's a class songwriter though.

Bono, Julian Casablancas and David Byrne are fantastic singers.
Dylan and Cohen are poets and never really claimed to be great singers.
A lot of bands have a style where the singer doesn't really sing as such, New Order, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Lou Reed, come to mind.

Moby (as much as I like him) cannot sing, neither can Kanye West (and I'm not talking about rapping, he does try and sing now and again).

Two rock/metal artists from bands I love don't really have the best voices, yet that did not stop them being successful, nor does it stop me from loving them!

    Joe Elliot from Def Leppard

    Stephen Pearcy from Ratt

Noel far me is a far superior live vocalist than Liam. Noel always nails it but Liam in recent years sounds like a foghorn when singing live.

Mark Knopfler has a style that most artists would give their limbs for, don't think any other singer could pull off Romeo and Juliet and the Sultans of Swing like he does and having sold in excess of 130 million records he's made a pretty good career out of this style.
Dire Straits are a very under rated band and as bands go only The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Rolling Stones and Genesis have sold more
