cycle touring in cavan area

asked this in the monaghan section.
so whats cavan like to cycle tour and very important camping.
hopefully during the summer months i would love to get to know parts of our country by bike.
so i'm looking for ideas folks any suggestions would be greatly appreciated;).

I dont know really but some of the roads around west Cavan, Glangevlin seem to be fairly empty, very rural and beatiful scenery.

Living in East Cavan I can say that cycling on our roads is a huge risk, the roads are too tight/twisty, hedges are overgrown and traffic too busy..

Cycling just isn't a safe pastime as it is in other European countries.. .. Irish drivers don't think about cyclists being just round the corner. Evening walkers on these country roads are also taking their lives in their hands

thanks folks for the reply's .i can say up my part of the country louth is every bit as bad for us cyclists, but what can you do can't let motorists take over our roads completely;) guess we just have to keep at it and watch out for the lunatic element .
anyway besides all that are there any big or small lakes that i could spend the night at in safety moving on the early the next morning.

West Cavan, where the road spins in between the neat hedgerows of Fermanagh farmland and the jaw dropping beauty of the Cuilcagh mountains and lovely Leitrim, is a fantastic place to travel on a bike. I cycled from Bundoran, near the Sligo Donegal border to Cavan town nearly two years ago in the chill of February and it was a wonderful trip. It's very flat so you don't need to worry about big climbs (I was on a single gear). I travelled through Blacklion ( http://www.gomapper.com/travel/directions-from/blacklion-to-ballyshannon.html) and then on through Florencecourt and Belturbet. The run from Belturbet to Cavan town is pretty horrible alright with big trucks trying to get past you so I don't recommend that stretch for the faint hearted.

I think, but I'm not sure and am about to research it myself, that there are bike trials in and around the Cuilcagh forest park area.

Regarding cycling in east Cavan, while cycling on the N3 is never going to be pleasant, I have also taken the bike around the Ballyjamesduff and Lough Duff areas. On a fine day that part of the county is unspoilt and beautiful and teeming with wildlife.

there are small back roads going parallel too that have very little traffic.

i.e. here, and BTW theres lovely scenery there along this route which skirts the lakes and river erne, and arrives into cavan from the Farnham estate direction.

I saw a tent camped at this place last weekend (theres even a turnstile into the field to climb the fence)

I'd ask the nearest house though if its ok though before pitching a tent, in case you have a grumpy farmer who owns the land and is worried about getting sued
