    Hi all,
just looking for a bitof advice with regards getting fit and healthy. I've found out quite recently that I'm ill and have been suffering with terrible stomache/bowel problems for over two years. I thought my diet was pretty good as I eat a lot of fruit and veg and hardly ever take aways but I do eat a looot of chocolate! I really need advice on getting fit and losing a bit of weight over the next few months so that I can keep my health at its best.

    Here are my stats:
    mid twenties
    5'10
    11ish stone
    small frame
    hate gyms!

    Thanks!

The most effective to way to see if you are eating healthy enough is a food diary. Just keep it for a week and then see if you need to make improvements. A lot of research has shown that trying to lose weight through exercise alone is quite difficult as people think because they have exercised that they can now have that bun !
Why not try jogging. Its cheap and very effective. The most common mistake is to start of too fast so just find a circuit and try jog a bit then walk for a bit eventually building up to a full circuit jogging at any speed. Walking is good too but it wont challenge the heart as much.
This book is excellent if you are looking for information on nutrition.
The Tao of health sex and longevity by Daniel Reid. Its a real gem !

Just wondering why you hate gyms? Is it a boredom thing? Or more an 'I don't know what I'm doing' thing? Because that can be easily fixed if you get a decent program that challenges you.

Maybe take up a sport? Basketball, football etc? Or maybe a dance class - there's that Zumba buzz that's going on at the moment, few of my friends are mad into it!

You know you need to watch the diet and keep an eye on the chocolate, so I'm not going to go on about that:) Maybe check out www.fitday.com too.

Before offering any advice I would ask if you have sought medical advice for you stomach/bowel issues which you state you have been suffering from for over 2 years?

Was any condition diagnosed and were you provided with a plan of action from the medical practioner who diagnosed you or referred on?

If you have not seen a medical professional re your illness and stomach/bowel issues, then IMHO this should be your first point of call.

I had stomach problems associated wiht bad diet and found that eating better and losing weight didn't fix the stomach problems until I cut out grains.

Cut them for 3 weeks felt a million times better and now feel awful if I eat bread, cereal or rice (especially rice!) I do miss bread but I enjoy not feeling like crap a lot more!

I presume I have some sort of grain intolerence so might not work for you but the same thing seems to be repeated by a number of posters of here so might be worth a shot - small price to pay for potential solution!

    +1 on the food diary.

Can you post here what you typically eat during a day?

How much carbohydrates do you eat? Bread, potatoes, rice, biscuits, cream crackers, breakfast cereal and the rest?

You eat lots of fruit and veg you say? What's the split between fruit vs veg?

Have you seen a good doctor for the stomach/bowel issues and are you on the path to recovery?

    Are you male or female?

What is a lot of chocolate by your standards?

What exercise regime have you followed recently, if any (even walking)?

Your Body Mass Index is 22.9. This is in the normal range so it doesn't look like you have much weight to lose (it's not a perfect measure, but quite useful).

Im actually having tests over the next few months to rule out cancer, intestina polyps, crohns, ect so will have no medical advice on my diet just yet. I hate gyms because (any time ive been) they've been full of posers/ too packed/ people were rude and I'd rather run outdoors than on a strip of rubber! So I'm gonna take up jogging, go swimming twice a week and drop the chocolate out of my otherwise healthy diet. Thanks for all the help:)
