I think his point is that it's done over 170k miles.
    Thats well over 50k miles a year - in a 2.8 petrol yoke :eek::eek::eek:

    That sounds about right.

Car like that would do 12 litres per 100km ( 24 mpg ) so 120 litres for 1000km, 33,360 litres for 278 thousand km at say 1.30 euro a litre average ( only recently has petrol went mad, was 1.20 something last year.

    That 43,368 euro on fuel.

Mad, but I bet he had fun:D

That's a sh1t load of mileage for a three year old car.

There was a mention on Octane of a Garda Vectra OPC estate a while back, wonder if that's the same one? I can't see that car as being worth anything over €3000 myself.

That garage is not too far from me, I might take a look at it out of curiosity if I am passing that way. BTW, what crazy person originally paid €50k for a Vectra?

it says in the ad "the only opel vectra opc estate sold in the republic"
i have no idea if thats true though
in 3 full years of ownership that would be somewhere around 160miles a day 7 days a week, or over 220 miles a day 5 days a week,
it could well be a garda car,

I would think it is, I remember being passed by a silver opc vectra estate on the M1 heading southbound for Drogheda a few months back. It has to be the same one, it was DEFINATELY a Garda car, aerials etc and the lights in the bumpers, got a shock to say the least! Nice to know it can do that sort of mileage though, but probably spent most of its life on the motorways around the country. Would like to go to work every day in one of those lol

There isn't many situations other than it being a Garda car where that mileage would be possible, crazy mileage in that time frame.

Yeah that mileage is absolutely insane. Some motor though, I bet whoever drove that had some craic!

I seen these when the were in the testing stage at the 'ring lovely sound out of them, would love to get a spin in and one and see if the live up to the billing.

I'm not too sure about the reliability of these lumps but if it was say the VAG 2.8 V6 then 170 k wouldn't scare me away one bit once the FSH was there. The fact is was a police car would scare me away though. :D

How could someone with the name "vectrahed" think the Vectra OPC is a diesel "with the turbo". As opposed a naturally aspirated Diesel in a "performance car"?

Mind you, 2.8L [Petrol DOHC] V6 that still needs forced induction to reach the dizzy heights of 276bhp in 2008.. Opel/GM sure do make some sucky engines and cars.

Ok, fair enough the gardai might need a quick car as such for doing some stuff like chasing stolen cars etc, but if they knew there would be over 50k miles a year put up on it, would it not make more sense to go with the likes of octavia with a 170bhp tdi engine (then remap it if they need the extra ponies), or even a 335d, both which will achieve far better fuel consumption??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭Wetbench4

    Crazy mileage on 3 year old. 172,000 / 3 = 57333miles per year, / 52 = 1102miles per week or 157miles per day

Don't forget that most of the cost of fuel is tax.

Things like this make baby Jesus cry:(. I know this is motors on boards and all that, but there is more to life than a bloody Octavia, even a remapped Octavia.
If you had suggested a 335d or 535d touring, or a Mercedes C320cdi estate, or any bloody diesel that comes with less than 100bhp defecit compared to the car you're proposing to replace, it'd be something, all turbocharged cars respond well to tuning, why always the bloody Octavia:confused:.

There, I've said it, I can't conceal my dirty little secret any more, I just don't get the obsession with the Octavia.

I think people are missing something here - that kind of mileage on that car without putting it through a hedge is no mean feat - I mean, aren't they notoriously poor handling ?

9.5k seems to be the "going rate" :D

Two years ago I was training in Dublin everyday for 6 months and for personal reasons ( baby + mortgage) I had to commute daily racking up near 1000 miles per week. Now in fairness I didn't have a 2.8 petrol so can't comment on fuel consumption my fuel bill was only 120 a week :)

in fairness if the cops who had that yoke were anything like the cops down this end it was maintained very well. ( I've seen cop cars being taken off the road and sent in for service because the light for low washer fluid came on :) and lots of other silly stuff ) I wouldn't mind having a look at it myself to keep as a weekender car.

Um... you could almost buy and RS4 or M3 for that asking price. Older granted but vastly more powerful and well, actually fit for purpose.

Yeah I misread the price. Might be a bit much for a weekend car.

Original ad doesn't exist any more - is this the same car? Now with 75k KM? (asking as I'm sure there can't be too many OPC estates about)

Yes its the same car. I posted it in the thread about Motorchecking cars. I also sent it to Donedeal, who replied that they now have the position they will wait for the Garda to tell them to take it down.

Have you looked at the dash (left side) and steering wheel. Come on, anyone who knows anything about cars will cop or should do that it has been clocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

I was going to say the same thing.

Someone who hasn't a clue about cars is not going to buy this because of the "massive" engine.

Someone who does have a clue is surely going to notice that the seat (the bolser in particular) does not look anything near as fresh as a car with "75k km" (47k miles) should?

If you look at the other photos, you can see the condition of the rear seat. There is no way in hell a back seat degrades like that if it has "75k km". It's one thing seeing a worn drivers seat. It is not unexpected that a driver's seat looks worse than the other seats. But the passenger's seat and the rear seats really give the game away that this car has clocked up a lot more than the 75k km it is being advertised for.

O/T but I cannot believe these cars were so basic.

No climate control or full leather on a 50k Opel? Someone is seriously extracting the urine with that!

I've seen bolsters worn after two years when the owner has been of a hefty (16 stone+) build.

Would a tow-bar be an unusual feature on a Garda car? Especially on something designated for high-speed use? Would traffic Corps cars be fitted with them for any reason?

This car had to be seen to be believed. Not a bit of wear on it, anywhere! no wear on the bolsters, steering wheel etc. All original paint, and no major stonechips, no wear on door hinges. No noise from wheel bearings, gearbox, smoke from engine etc. Absolutely flawless, I reckon if it was a diesel, it would have shook itself to death 50k ago lol.
Guy that had it drove from limerick to dublin everyday, but really knew how to look after a car. Always serviced at the interval, which was every 2 monthsgrnsurprised.gif
I drove it for the easter weekend after it came into stock on the thursday, and it was one hell of a car, massive room, comfort, endless power etc. If it was blue, i probably would have bought it myself.
    It sold the following tuesday!!
