    Hi Folks,

I have been running down the beach lately.

Anyone else find running on sand quite soar on your calf muscles.

I try to run on the hardest sand available when I’m down there, I’m just worried I’m injuring myself.

Does anyone have any info on the right way or right type of sand to run on, should I warm up for longer, if my calf muscles hurt should I give it a rest for a few days?

    Thanks in advance Folks,

    B

It's not going to injure you any more than running on any other surface. Possibly less. It's bloody hard work though! I'd say that's what you're feeling.

running on sand is much tougher since you have to put in more work to cover the same distance...and im pretty sure its not an injury since sand is soft to run on?!

Its probably not cooling down properly thats causing the stiffness instead of not warming up properly.

Plus the fact that its new to your body and it needs time to adapt to it

The reason your calves are sore is because of the extra forward flexing of the foot as it sinks into the sand. You don't have this when running on hard surfaces.

I’d hazard a guess that the stiffness is being caused by microtrauma to his muscles due to the new stabilization demand being put on them. Very little they do will prevent that until their body adapts.
