Herself is thinking of getting one.

Haven't seen many around, but was looking at one the other day and it struck me as a handy woman's car, nice size and all that. Bit of a coup for BMW... first women's coupé maybe?

I saw one parked at the gym last week and did not know what it was, so went over to have a look.

I think there is a reason that you don't see them around that much, it was not very nice!

It looks very small in the flesh and the back kind of reminded me of a Hyundai Accent from years ago.

I think they are out a couple of years now and dont appear to be great sellers.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

135i coupe. Savage little car. RWD and >300BHP. I'd love one :D

I don't want to offend any true BMW afficionados, but I'd say it would beat an original BMW M3 on a track. That's before any remap :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,295 ✭✭✭n97 mini

Yeah, not a fan of the looks myself. She's also interested in the Lexus CT... might nudge her in that direction.

BTW, I find all version of the 1 series to be horrendously ugly.

They don't appear to have sold well over here, but perhaps in the UK its a different story.

The M model is coming out soon, I think they are trying to fill the gap between the last 6 cyl M3 and the current V8 M3. But it will be a niche product, a marketing exercise really.

For what its worth Clarkson seems to like it, though I think the three litre twin turbo engine may have had something to do with that..
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/jeremy_clarkson/article3103294.ece

I would probably avoid really. They're probably not going to hang onto their value as well as the 3 series coupe.

Well, front wheel drive coupes, they are definitly only for de wimmen, like live yogurt, you know it's just wrong.
Bmw coupes are for men, even the girly ones, like the one series !

    I'll get my coat.:)

The 1 series isn't very nice looking from the side or back, and I think they are something of a pointless exercise, but I would imagine they are equally as good to drive as most BMWs!

    I'd have one.

Its the closest spiritual successor of the old 2002 that BMW have every produced

    As for girls cars:

Its a girls car, wife bought one for herself not so long ago. I have taken a couple of spins in it and nice car to drive and quite nippy. If looking for a car for wife there isn't much better out there in that price range from what I can see.

Not this crap again ... the 1 Series Coupé gets launched, and stereotypically the reactions are

America : Bimmerfile.com reckon it's the purest, focused BMW since the e30 M3, anyone who's passionate about cars and driving needs a 135 now. The M version, even more so.

    Ireland : Girls car, pffffft.

Jealousy... jealousy - that's one side of it.
Ignorance and boasting is the other.

It's a great looking car - nice wheels and a good colour and it'll be the nicest car amongst hundreds.

I think the coupe looks a little dull. The hatchback is savage though.

    +1 on the 135 engine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

+1 on Paint Doctor's comment, only in Ireland would a 1 series Coupe be considered to be a girls car - it's only the car that is considered to be the modern day successor to the not at-all-girly BMW E30:rolleyes:!

I suppose this comment really is not surprising given that Ireland is a country where being into cars is frowned upon and our obsession with buying poverty spec cars with dangerously underpowered engines.

I don't see how people can class it as a girls car.

The 135i is all about the engine though, it is far from the best handler, do a google search for "135i understeer".

Also people banged on abot how it was harking back to the old days (E30), no fuss lightweight small coupe's when in fact, engine for engine it is only 40kg lighter than the equivalent 3 series coupe.

I still like them though, I suppose maybe because they are a rare sight but the 335i is a much better balanced car.

The 1-series with a proper engine in any of it's shapes is a very good car, and the short wheelbase makes for a more agile car on some of Irelands backroads than a 3-series. The same could have been said about the 3-series compact. The 325ti was a great little car, but no one bought them really.
However, the 1-series is horrible looking. Really crap. Don't know if it's an ugly mans car or ugly girls car, and I don't care, I just think it's ugly. The Coupe looks like a 3-series coupe that shrunk unevenly in the wash.

    Here we go again...

Whenever the MINI, Hyundai Coupe etc. is mentioned we get the usual haughty retort about how there's no such thing as a 'girls car', how those who don't agree need to 'grow a pair' etc etc. It's all pretty condesending.

Part of the appeal of a car, whether you want to admit it or not is the image it portrays. I don't give two hoots what some US mag says or how the manufacturer tries to spin dome tenuous 'spiritual' link to a legend from the back catalogue. This is not NYC or LA or even London. Different cultures, different strokes.

The 1-series coupe I wouldn't necessarily consider feminine or girly. It's small saloon-like proportions are worringly Accent/Tilda-like tho and it has as much in common with the 2002 as I have with Burt Reynolds.

The OP's oblivious(?) Gene Hunt sexism is kinda funny!

Ah come on! We're talking about a piddling 116i or a 118d. Definitely a girly poser's car. And pburns is right; it's all about image and how people want to portray themselves when they buy one of these. A 135i is a totally different animal and wasn't even mentioned by the OP. You're derailing the thread IMO.

Yup. And I make no apologies for thinking it's a bit sad to be worrying about whether a car is a 'girls' car. It's also an outlook that IMO is rare among people who actually like cars.

That depends on the person. It's not a factor for me.

Now i'm really lost. If you'd said the 7 series was a manly car i'd at least be able to see where you're coming from, but the 6? That's just an older persons car than the 1, probably on account of its being a few times more expensive.

Isn't the 7 an older persons car too? But I think you have to be a solicitor to own one.

So long as it's the Coupé, it's forgiveable. I saw a convertible one a few weeks ago in Munich, and, tbh, I'd have one over a 3-series. Like all small cars.......they grow in size over time, so it's probably now like a 3-series of a few years ago.

Her taste in cars and mine generally wouldn't be the same. Neither the CT or the 1 would be my cup of tae, but if it was for me I think the 1 is just a bit too ugly.

Haven't seen the inside of the CT, just watched one or two reviews. Looks lovely, and quality. I do agree that the outside is a bit Avensis alright.

The 135i stock is like 2% slower than an e46 M3:

    Which is good goin.

Id have one in black with wide wheels/spacers and fairly heavily tuned if I was in the market... but Im not entirely sure what market its actually in.

Had one for two days this week. Awful is all I can say. I can see the appeal if you are over 65, live in an urban area, do not need performance, and basically have given up on life. Why anyone else would buy one is a mystery to me.

Any of the high powerd diesels or petrols are great to drive. I drove a 123D a couple of years ago and it was serious fun, very twitchy at the rear end!
Like earlier posters I think the 1 series coupe is the nearest thing to a 80's 3 series as the modern 3 series coupe has gone a bit soft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭mal1

I don't think it's a ladies car. I'd love one to replace my E30. They look to be around the same size and there's just too many 3series around at the moment. I reckon I see a E46 M3 every second day

Yeah, I get it (and I'm too lazy to look up internet pics or dimensions right now) but to me the 1-series coupe is too tall and narrow-looking to be anything like as well proportioned as the E30. And I pretty sure it's weight is closer to the current 3-series than the '80s 3-series.

I think it's great car and not only for woman, of course it's small so it is easier to park in town but still if i would have one i would be realy happy person!

Btw. i wouldn't buy it just because it's not much cheaper than 3-series...

    Yes it is! a 120d M-Sport Auto Coupé: €39486. A 320d M-Sport Auto Coupé is €9725 or 25% more.

It is reminiscent of the E30, IMO, but you're right - it's nothing like as pretty. It is at least a bit brave, though - the E92 is as bland as bland gets.
