Are the Garda reserve trained to use the new equipment for testing tinted windows and also testing the noise levels for exhausts?

Also can they actually carry out the tests themselves?

I would have thought only the Garda Traffic Corp can carry the equipment and do the test?

Reserve Gardai are always accompanied by Regular Members.

Reserve Gardai normally would not be patrolling with Traffic Corps Members, but all regular Gardai and Reserves can request the assistance of the Traffic Corps members if required for their specialist knowledge. Potentially dangerous vehicles can be seized by regular Gardai for examination by appropriate personnel also.

I aint answering your exact question (as exact details of GR training are not in the public domain) but Im curious as to why you ask?

It came up over on the Modified Cars section from the Crime call piece last night and I was interested in the answer.

More specifically interested in a Garda reserves knowledge of the equipment as it has been stated on thread that a reserve member has stated that the "manual of the noise detection equipment states the test has to be carried out with the car traveling at 30 miles per hour" which I find hard to believe :D

Ah ok I cant answer that specific question so, apologies.

I would be surprised at any reserve having that much specific knowledge, but if they are a car enthusiast themselves then perhaps they looked into it.

Il let NGA or someone with expertise in that area answer.

Anyone know what legislation covers the new tests and the offences?

Wasn't it brought in for the new NCT?

I'm unsure as to whether Reserve Members are entitled to use said equipment but once trained I cannot see why not. Members of the full time regular unit however are permitted to carry out this testing (once trained).

A simple answer to your question daf is only GTC members are trained and carry the new equipment.

No the car has to be stationary for tests to be carried out.

In regards legislation, it's mostly covered by EU legislation (S.I. Here) combined with best international standards and regulations. The limits as such are not defined in law, something like the 20 obs period for intoxylizer use, best international practice and all that.

As far as I'm aware, it's the Construction and Use of vehicles section, from '63, and updated with EU legislation. Previously, it was just a Guard's opinion, the equipment just provides better evidence.

Just after reading the posts it brought to mind, I have seen many police cruisers over here with windows so dark you cant even see inside, and yet, yes...... the State Police carry such testing equipment to check vehicles, kind of the "pot calling the Kettle black" so to say. Just for your amusement heres a link to an artcile on the subject over here in Massachusetts.
