Hardy's accent seems a bit ropey but it looks like an interesting story, I'll probably go see it. :)

Joel Edgerton is a pretty decent actor very underrated imo

Did they just show the whole film in 2 minutes?

I feel like Homer after he watched part of McBain in the video shop 'do you want to rent this film sir?' 'Why, I just saw the best part?'

one of best films i've seen in a while nolte is brillant best role in a long time for him and hardy gets better and better all oscar worthy performances

seen this today, what a excellent film, nolte is great, tom hardy is quite brilliant, fast becomming one of my favourite actors, he holds the screen every time he appears in it.. such menace about him in this.. better than the fighter imo.. loved it.

I saw the trailer and thought just another Rocky/The Fighter/The Wrestler flick but its getting great reviews, might check it out tomorrow night

loved it .. one of the best of the year and Nolte deserves an Oscar nod.

Could not get over how different Joel Edgerton looked with the extra weight he was carrying. Had watched Animal Kingdom last week, and the difference between how he looked facially was huge.

Nolte was quality, there were two or three scenes with him that stole the show. It was a great portrayal of an addict trying to make amends for the destruction he had caused.

Nolte was amazing alright, I didnt realise Koba was Kurt Angle until a mate told me! Great movie, best I have seen in awhile!

Wow!! amazing film from start to finish.. gut wrenching stuff.. Nolte was brilliant, I hope he's nominated for an Oscar after that.

The ending was a little predicable but it still delivered.

Was on my phone last night so couldn't say much, but that gave me a chance to think about the film.

The performances were really excellent and made film.

    The scene where
Paddy has a relapse is one of the most heart breaking scenes I've seen in a long time, yet one of the most touching at the same time as Tommy finally shows a bit of compassion towards his old man.

Tom Hardy is also brilliant, especially in the final fight. You could feel the malice and venom dripping off of him and was quite simply unsettling to watch. Good news for all you Bane fans. ;)

I liked how they didn't go into too much detail of Paddy's past treatment of his family as it's always said that in addiction, you see two totally different men: one before and after seeking help. It's incredibly frustrating for the recovering addict when his past deeds are held against him, as the person who committed those deeds are a complete stranger to them. And Nolte got all of that across really well.

The one problem I would have with the film is the drama in the ring. By the time
Brendan got to the final, he shouldn't have been able to stand. I never really feared for him in his fight against Koba and I don't think the result had the consequences that it should of had. Bare in mind that Brendan is fighting Tommy on the same night that he was seemingly pummelled by Koba.
Then there's Tommy, who steamrolled through 3 fighters in a matter of seconds. There is no way that Brendan should have got the upper hand here. The roles should have been reversed in the final: it should have been Tommy who caused the serious injury to Brendan. We all knew that Brendan was already feeling very guilty about what happened, he had already shown brotherly love. So it should have been Tommy who was struggling with the fact that he could be possibly be killing his brother. It should have been Tommy that broke down constantly repeating "I love you, you're my brother", not Brendan.

I just feel that the ending was designed to neatly tie up the story (Brendan needing the money) rather than to give us that big emotional pay off.

handsome bob, i agree with the first part of your post, the final bit not so much, tom hardy in this film is quite brilliant.. ooozes genuine menace,

would have hated if what u said should have happend did, of course its an american movie so you get these type endings.

    dare i say it,for warrior 2

I'm sure ya can see where I'm coming from though, I just would have expected Brendan to be in no fit state to fight against Tommy.

Oh I agree that there is a very big difference in how Hardy looked in those roles and in Warrior, just that it did not come as a surprise to me based on how he looked when he bulked up for the Bronson role.

Joel Edgerton on the other hand really looked different to me as I had never seen him bulked up to that degree.

Guess it was like when I saw Bale for the first time in the Machinist. I was gobsmacked at how he had lost so much weight for the role, but when he repeated the weight loss trick a few years later for Rescue Dawn, the image of him looking that way just did not have the same impact.

    brilliant film with amazing performances.

if nick nolte doesn't win best supporting actor theres no justice

Yeah this was pretty good, I guess. Well made, well acted and the fight scenes at the end are excellent. However, the underdog former fighter being forced back into the ring/cage/whatever because of financial problems storyline has really been done to death. And I don't understand why Edgerton's wife didn't do a bit of underwear modeling alongside her day job. That would have sorted all their financial problems right there.

Anyway, MMA fans will love this. Personally I'd rather watch Rocky again, but this is worth seeing for Hardy's performance alone.

    Great film--Nolte was perfectly cast
    Hardy is great as usual
Even though the ending was foreseeable and was wrapped up quickly--nice job

Predictable, slightly unrelaistic in some ways but bloody hell was it entertaining. I was really rooting for Brendan all the way through, but you root for Tommy too and I was quite conflicted through out, although more of the focus is on Brendan for sure. All the performances were outstanding and it has some genuinely emotional moments, the final fight is extremely intense and probably one of the most memorable scenes of the year. Thoroughly satisfying ending although I agree with handsome bob to an extent that what he said would have been a better and probably braver ending in some ways, but it would have been hard to take!

    Highly recommended.

I was going to avoid this because I cant stand MMA/UFC

But people talking about the performances here is kind of changing my mind. I'm intrigued now!

I hate MMA/UFC, don't particularly like boxing or wrestling either but still thought it was great!

Hmmm... just back from it - and a little disappointed to be honest. Nolte is very good, Hardy and Edgerton are pretty good too. But the film takes too long to get going as far as I'm concerned.
Yes, yes, we get it - Dad was a drunk, abused the mother and the boys had it tough... but did we need 90 minutes of it before the action started?

The last fight is pretty good but the ending quite predictable. I thought Nolte was under-used to be honest.

Nolte was incredible in it. Definite Oscar nomination contender. The
    hotel room relapse scene
    was heartbreaking.

Also, from a perspective of being a fan of UFC, my one slight criticism was that there's no ref in the world who would allow Brendan to take all of those punches without defending himself. If that was real life, the ref would have ended things way earlier. But that's just me being picky :o

    Was it though?
Did anybody really think that the reforming alcoholic father ("1000 days" etc etc) would not have a relapse at some stage? The fact he was mumbling references to Moby Dick with his earphones on drew a few giggles from the audience in the theatre. It was quite a touching moment but it wasn't all that special, I didn't feel.

Oh it was definitely coming, and in truth the more heartbreaking scene was probably directly before it where Tommy lets him have it at the slot machines. I just liked how the hotel scene was done and that for the first time you get to see Tommy as somewhat human while Nolte loses the plot.

What would you opinion of a sport have to do with liking a film? it's obviously about much more than the sport itself.

    Surely when brendan
    broke tommy's arm
it would have caused the fight to be stopped also, that bothered me more than what you mentioned.

Yeah, but the ref didn't know about that. Brendan tried to tell him but his coach stopped him.

It's a decent enough film, but I feel the acting is almost too good for the film and story. Hardy, Nolte and Edgerton were all great in it but the story let it down a bit. There were some really poor moments in it I thought including
when the teacher is celebrating in the room when Brendan wins, it felt like a cheap disney family movie or something.

    I thought some of the
    army
thing was a bit pointless too really. Found it strange that even though he was
revealed to be a deserter, that all the soldiers still supported him wildly.

Good film but not near Oscar quality IMO. The one thing I will take away from this film is I absolutely cannot wait to see Hardy as Bane in Dark Knight Rises, anyone with any doubts should go see this, if only for him.

Saw the trailer, just thought something similar to rocky and the types, watched Drive last night, going to check this out see if it can top this.

    But I doubt it.

Yeah, but the ref didn't know about that. Brendan tried to tell him but his coach stopped him.

    surely the ref knew.
he had to have known hardy was badly injured - he was fighting with one arm for a big chunk of the fight. edgerton threw his hands up at one stage looked around and then started pleading with hardy to quit. the ref was right there he had to have heard.

anyway was a great film. really enjoyed it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

    The whole
arm thing is pretty much viewed as ridiculous by anyone that knows anythign about MMA. A few times people have fought on with broken bones in their hands, or suffered a break but knocked the other guy out very soon after. But fighting on so obviously hurt is impossible.

Saw this in Dundrum last week and I was literally the only person there.

Enjoyable movie tho, I was lukewarm on it for the first 90 minutes or so but the fight scenes toward the end were really gripping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,584 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Ultimately a pretty cheesy at times and very predictable movie but one with pretty strong characters. Didn't like Tommy much at all and Joel Edgerton was the real star of the movie although I didn't like Tommy because of his character, nothing against Hardy's acting. Kurt Angle as Koba was a real WTF moment too. The father seemed like he was taken straight from the cliche book.

A thing that really annoyed me as someone who watches MMA quite regularly was at the end
They definitely wouldn't have allowed him to fight with a broken freaking arm without at least having a doctor look at it!

Overall a very good movie despite what I've said above and people who don't have such a knowledge of MMA might enjoy it a lot more than me as it is borderline great movie if not for a few cheesy characters and moments bringing it down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

saw this earlier, really enjoyed it, Nolte fully deserves an Oscar nomination but Hardy owns every scene he's in,the
scene at the slot machine where he throws the coins at his father is one of the best scenes of the year imo, and the subsequent relapse into drinking, Tommy cradling his drunken father was really touching

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,123 ✭✭✭the whole year inn

Isnt it a sparta touraament and thats why he is allowed to fight with the broken arm.

    Thats wgat ithought any.

I thought this movie rocked and who ever said it about hardy being bane is correct.Roll on next year!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 712 ✭✭✭arsenallegend

This film rocked from start to finish. Tom hardy really steals the film along with Nick nolte.

Did anyone else have a tear in the eye at the end when The National's About today was playing at the end fight. So powerful and heartbreaking.

I've never been a huge fan of sports movies so I was a little apprehensive about going to see 'warrior' but wow this film just blew me away.Defintely the best film i've seen this year. its so much more than just a mixed martial arts movie. The depth the actors bring to these characters is outstanding. Tom Hardy is just incredible. I found myself quite teary eyed at parts...paticulary at the end (even if it was a tad cliche).Hardy and Nolte most defintely deserve oscar nods for their performances. A definte must see.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,464 ✭✭✭e_e

It looks like this film kinda flopped. It's no longer in the top 10 for UK, Ireland or America and it has yet to even make back its budget.

Shame, let's hope it's bigger on DVD though.

going to see this on saturday.
My mates bro went to see it twice so it must be decent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

Sorry if this has been posted somewhere, just merge if needed.

Went to see this last night by accident and haven't enjoyed a movie as much in a long time.

I didn't know anything about it except that it was about mixed martial arts. I thought it would be an Asian guy fighting in some tournament yadda yadda yadda.

Movie starts slow but the longer it goes the more into it you get. Without giving anything away the performance of hardy is immense and while the comparisons with rocky are hard to avoid (I love rocky btw) I think as a movie on it's own this is a truly enjoyable 2hours 20 mins.

I didn't want the movie to end , was on the edge of my seat at times and went home wishing that every trip to the cinema could leave me with the same feeling of joy and satisfaction. I actually felt that in had been working out during the movie. This is prob because I felt the movie was an emotional rollercoaster that drew me in completely.

The fact that our hero is having the same trouble with his heartless bank prob made him an even more likable character.

If you go into this movie as a cynic looking for reasons not to like it, I think you will prob find what you are looking for. If you go into the movie looking for an escape rollercoaster of a movie that will pull your emotions in every direction (and you allow yourself to become engrossed) you will not be dissapointed. Best movie of the year by a country mile for me.
