Metabolism shot

    Hi all,

I have finally registered as I am in dire straits and in need of some advice....not a telling off please, just advice on how to fix my metabolism.

I am a yoyo dieter and am sick to the teeth of it. 18 months ago I used to eat clean-ish and was a happy weight, fluctuating between 114 and 118lbs. But slowly my eating habits deteoriated (sp?) and I started eating more and more processed crap, living on chocolate and pastries. Even so I kept my weight fairly in check by doing a quick week of atkins every now and again. (Btw I hated atkins as I am not a big meat eater and miss fruit waaayyyyy too much when I do it). I would often in the past number of years have followed numerous fad diets...cabbage soup, fruit flush ..etc.
Anyway I am currently at 126 lbs, heaviest I have ever been in my life and so am not feeling too good about myself. Yes, technically speaking my 'problem' is easily fixed...return to clean eating but I SERIOUSLY think I have f'd up my metabolism........Wait for it, it gets better....you see, over the past 2 months I have been water fasting on and off, typically a week or 10 days on water(I know this is not advocated here, yes it was pure stupidity, i was looking for a quick fix again and I am now paying for it). When I returned to eating normally I tried to reintroduce food slowly but always had a day where i over-ate by like 1000 cals or so.
Herein lies the problem. I cannot even try to eat normally without my weight shooting up since then and I have to keep Cals at a minimum to even stay at the weight I am now. Even when I was 12 lbs lighter I was eating 3/4 times as much as I do now.
SO my question is....can my metabolism return to normal? Through diet and exercise? How long will it take? Or as I fear am I screwed for life?

In short - you will be grand. When you eat at present, your weight is shooting up fast as it's re filling glycogen, water that was used and not in the body when you fasted with water only.

The answer really is as simple as you stated - return to normal, clean eating - whole foods that are ingredients rather than foods that have lots of ingredients. You need to ignore the scales for couple of weeks. You've been ****ing with your body, you now need to give it time to TRUST you again. It WILL be hard at first but you won't know yourself in 2 weeks. Wait about a month to weight yourself - use a measure tape to take measurements. I am sure you are also aware that 1000 cals is not enough to live off daily. There will be an adjustment period for a bit; go with it.

Exercise is good - cardio, weight training, flexibility, take your pick or a mix of all (ideally) but do what you enjoy and what you will stick to.Are there any sports you like? Do not rely on exercise for the weight - rely on a decent long term sustainable change in eating patterns and habits and attack any mental stuff stopping you achieving what you want.

If you go off the rails on the future do't starve yourself, just go back to clean eating.

All the best. Let us know how it goes.

Big thanks...I just breathed a massive sigh of relief there...can you believe that? Afraid I was gonna get a right bollicking!!

Ya, I actually stepped on the scales this am for the last time, they are now in the bin covered in loads of smellly leftovers( just so as I won't pull them out again!!).

Ok so I will return to clean eating, its crazy cos I love all fruit and veg but once I start eating crap I get stuck on that train!

Re exercise I walk and have started cycling. I probably need to focus more on toning up though. I was jogging until I put out my ankle, might try returning to that too.

Thanks again for your advice and encouragement...seriously appreciated!!

seriously hit the weights focus on food quality at first and then dial back the carbs from there
