Too many reps?

So I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in ages and made an appointment with a trainer. He said to hold off on cardio now because I'm skinny and to eat a good bit more, which seems to make sense. However, he's also got me doing 2-3 set of 15 reps on all weights. Wouldn't that prevent me from lifting heavy and gaining muscle?

If I do my best on this workout 3 times per week and eat loads more protein, will I gain muscle or will I just get fat?

You'll gain muscle, buy it's not the best way to do it. Everyone is slightly different but generally to build muscle it's best to keep the reps below 12.

Personally I like to do 3-5 reps on the big compounds like squats and deadlifts. 6-8 on most other stuff and 10-12 on arms/calfs etc.

you certainly wont get fat and will definitely gain some muscle. he probably has you on that program to increase muscular endurance and to hone proper form on certain exercises. practice makes perfect so keep the reps high and practice the proper range of motion/technique that you have been shown for the next few sessions.

once you are confident that you learned the proper technique, start lifting heavier for less reps (like the above post). however be careful under heavy weight (use a spotter) and dont overestimate yourself. oh, and eat LOTS more protein too.
