Why are there so many idiots everywhere?

Why are there so many IDIOTS in all walks of life? For instance plenty of people thought it was a good idea to guarantee all deposits in Irish banks. Look what happened.

Plenty of people still believe that you should eat a diet full of starch and avoid fat.

Plenty of people thought it was perfectly rational to borrow 6-7 times their combined annual income.

Plenty of people even thinks voting makes a difference.

What can a man like me do when I'm surrounded by morons?

Kill yourself, it's the only way to be sure. If you tried to kill everyone else they'd probably be too stupid to die.

Edit: Don't really kill yourself. That'd be silly. Instead go for a frolic in a field, with the daisies and moo-cows.

I'm on disability and work on a cash only basis. I'll assume "idiot" applies to taxpayers (Fianna FAIL contributors) only. In that case, yup the celtic kitten was a laugh. Funny how you still want drugs, guns etc. to **** each other up, rich or poor. As the man said, its the economy, stupid. Perhaps the Queen will have you back.

Thats not trolling, that is truth.

    Dear whiteonion

I have been requested by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company to contact you for assistance in resolving a matter. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company has recently concluded a large number of contracts for oil exploration in the sub-Sahara region. The contracts have immediately produced moneys equaling US$40,000,000. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company is desirous of oil exploration in other parts of the world, however, because of certain regulations of the Nigerian Government, it is unable to move these funds to another region.

You assistance is requested as a non-Nigerian citizen to assist the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, and also the Central Bank of Nigeria, in moving these funds out of Nigeria. If the funds can be transferred to your name, in your United States account, then you can forward the funds as directed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. In exchange for your accommodating services, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company would agree to allow you to retain 10%, or US$4 million of this amount.

However, to be a legitimate transferee of these moneys according to Nigerian law, you must presently be a depositor of at least US$100,000 in a Nigerian bank which is regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

If it will be possible for you to assist us, we would be most grateful. We suggest that you meet with us in person in Lagos, and that during your visit I introduce you to the representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, as well as with certain officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Please call me at your earliest convenience at 18-467-4975. Time is of the essence in this matter; very quickly the Nigerian Government will realize that the Central Bank is maintaining this amount on deposit, and attempt to levy certain depository taxes on it.

    Yours truly,

You know I think Sean FitzPatrick actually bit that bait.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/ireland/article7061172.ece
n Anglo Irish source said that earlier this year the bank had discussed a business plan that FitzPatrick presented, which was designed to show how he could repay his loans. It assumed certain property investments would regain some value and that he could raise money from a stake in a Nigerian oil well. The bank did not accept the plan. Anglo Irish has already taken a charge on FitzPatrick’s share in the oil well, which is potentially valuable. The bank, and not FitzPatrick, will now dictate the future of the stake.

Guaranteeing of depositors also guaranteed the senior bond holders, since they have to be paid - in law - before depositors. ( Pretty much they deposit money to buy bonds as I understand it).

As for your tiny sum, it was guaranteed anyway.

You might like to read that.

The guarantee on deposits is not the reason why Ireland is in the position we are in right now.

The guarantee to to back up the banks LIABILITIES AND BORROWING AND BAD DEBTS most certainly is.

By guaranteeing the entire deposits of the banks, the bank guarantee, everything else was guaranteed as well. That is why Ireland is where it is.

All deposits cant be guaranteed unless everything else is guaranteed, all of these banks have more liabilities than their depositors can handle, without a guarantee the banks would close and the depositors would lose their money.

By guaranteeing the deposits everything else was guaranteed. Pal.

Getting really tired of the Pal < Pal >Pal < Pal back and forths, but to be honest, what you've just said there is fallible. take the FDIC for instance

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Deposit_Insurance_Corporation

that doesnt mean banks havent shut down since the 1930s, it means that when a bank implodes, it's account holders aren't burned. FDIC steps in and (currently) insures each deposit holder gets their money back up to a maximum of $250,000. That in no way has anything to do with the imploding bank's personal liabilities. If a bank loses a lawsuit and owes the state $100 billion, FDIC doesnt give them $100bn just to pay it right back to the state. Thats what you think is happening, is it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,751 ✭✭✭Saila

just to spell things out, there are 2 fundamental things

Deposits: money put in the bank by population and smaller business
Bonds: similar to how shares function, bought by speculators usually from other countries

but it appears you cant by law guarantee deposits without guaranteeing bonds also, and this why it went bad, bonds are what has us in the mess, but for some reason they couldnt change the law to say FU bond holders only the deposits are covered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,985 ✭✭✭skelliser

    but bonds are debt FFS!!

unlike deposits bonds mature! they are paid back at various times, deposits and bonds appear as debt on a banks books.
when Lenny guaranteed all he strung us out with all this debt.

His decision will be taught and laughed at in economics lectures for all eternity!

we guaranteed all deposits which include bonds AND then liabilities!
The reasoning behind this was that biffo and lenny believed that there would be a massive influx of deposits into ireland thus pulling a master stroke and saving ireland.
Or in laymans terms, a drunken gambler going all in with not only his house, but his life savings and the life savings of his yet unborn children!
    only in ireland!

FlutterinBantam by trying to be smart and pedantic you are showing yourself to be one of these so called idiots although i was sold when you said you had 50k in the ponzai scheme that was anglo!!

Don't really know what you are trying to prove or who you are trying to insult.

If you take the trouble to read the OPs post he /she refers to deposits.

Deposit guarantee, that is all I am interested in.If you want to bring in liabilities well that's another story.

Now I don't know why you think i am an idiot with 50k in an Anglo deposit when it is guaranteed and now in AIB and worth 55k+.

maybe you could explain that last paragraph, because I can make no sense to it.
