DLR Bay 10k : Monday Aug 1st (Dún Laoghaire)

Disclosure: Was speaking to one of the organisers for this event and I may be helping in some capacity.

However nice new 10k event planned for the Bank Holiday Monday in August. The race will be organised by DLR (Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council) and as questions arise I should be able to come back with answers. I personally know the race crew involved and have been involved with them in races previously, so I fully expect this event to tick all the right boxes from an organisation and safety perspective.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to announce the inaugural running of the dlr Bay 10k Road Race, taking place on Bank Holiday Monday, 1st August 2011 at 10am. This event will cater for participants aged 16 years and upwards, and will also cater for all categories of participants including Runners, Joggers, Fun Runners, Walkers, the Visually Impaired, Wheelchair users and Others.

Great, this looks really good. I just checked it on Mapmyrun and it looks a really flat route. Perfect addition to the race calendar (I was a bit disappointed that the parkwest 10k was cancelled).
I should be racing this, fit's in really well with My Berlin marathon training.

I'll be doing this also, not so sure if I'd go so far as to call it flat, should be a fair climb out of dun Laoghaire.
I suppose it ends at sea level so it all works out

Well, mapmyrun shows a drag between 2-5km (never more than 1-2% gradient) and there is a gradual drop between 5-8km.
I think the total climb is less than 50m.
For me that is a flat course (no hills). You'll only get a flatter course if you run around a running track.

I guess I would rather one water station done properly, than a couple of half arsed efforts..

Arent they normally every 3 miles in longer races anyway, so its not so bad.

Suits me perfect too, maybe this could be my target race to go sub 50 mins

Some nice boozers out that way, for post race refreshment too :cool:

I agree on the water stations. No real need for one than one in the 10k.

Also targetting sub 50 minutes. See you there.

Ah great a local race! Theres no way I'd call that a flat course either. Mountown has been a building site for what seems like the last two years, wonder if it'll be sorted in time?

Beep: The course is taking in some very busy roundabouts, will they be closing those roundabouts or whats the plan there?

And I second the Teddy's idea!

I'm meeting the organisers in a few weeks - but my understanding is that the Gardi have approved the course and will be supporting the event.

This is just down the road from me, less than 10 minutes away. I might give it a go to see if I can break my current "PB" from the first 10k I ever did a few weeks ago at the Great Ireland Run.

Theres actually 3 hills i think: Along Seapoint avenue as far as Monkstown road, down Monkstown road, Monkstown up to York road junction, and then finally Monkstown farm Oabout up to Sallynoggin Oabout. Nice Downhill then and Albert road should be wind assisted unless were out of luck.

delighted to see a race there. Would be great to see a running club emerge there too at some stage.

Id join ye but heading for Trooperstown Hill race.
Ran the second half of it at lunch the other day. Found anothe sneaky hill or two although yell enjoy Albert Road!!!

I'd rather no water station and a fiver off the price. You shouldn't need water on a 10k.

No water needed this evening anyway - there was plenty falling from the sky!
Here's the route: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/97277091 it's very runable and all the hard work is over by halfway.

I would LOVE to see a running club out here! I'm lucky enough to live here and it is a fabulous place to run. Hills up in Killiney if you need them or flat runs on both piers or into Sandymount.
I'm away on holidays or I'd most definitely be doing this race.

Yep, its a great area for running allright. Blackrock AC is closest i guess. The gravel track in the big park off Johnstown road/N11 has had markings added so some group (schools) must have been using it recently.

Im sure you have plenty of runs planned out for the hols so you should just about survive the ordeal!! (lucky you!)

That's Kilbogget park, I was part of a group who was training kids (including my own) from Dalkey, glenageary for Community games there during May. It took place in Santry in June and was super fun. No medals for my boys but we were thrilled to be there.
I was thinking I must head up there to do some interval training, it would make a change of scenery.

Will there be late entries for this race? Currently have a broken collarbone should be right to run it by then but not sure. It wouldn't be getting so much advertising if there was only a very small field allowed to run.

Also its very hard to plan these things too far in advance for a bank holiday weekend!

Although the brochure has a closing date of July 11th on it, there's no mention of a closing date on runireland. I'll be away in the week coming up to the race so I'm hoping they'll take late entries as I can't decide to risk €25 by registering by Monday next.

Formal response:

Good news – the closing date has been extended until Monday 25th July, run Ireland was updated and there might some marketing materials around that show the 11th. Number collection will take place at Dun Laoghaire Shopping centre from 13:00 until 17:00 Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July.
A number of out of town number collections will be facilitated, Please contact us on info@dlrbay10k.ie to arrange a suitable time.

I contacted the organisers who said that confirmation emails would be issued soon.

Acceptance letters are sent in batches within 2 working days once payment is confirmed, plus Run Ireland should send a confirmation email to the account used in registration. Everyone who has entered should receive an info email over the next few days.
