What can we actually do to get the country back on it's feet?

What can we do, as citizens of the Republic of Ireland, to actually assist ourselves in getting out of the mess we find ourselves in? I ask this in all seriousness, because most Irish people are actually doing everything they can to negate the effects of the recession. It seems like, at this stage, it's totally beyond our control and that our lives are at the mercy of forces beyond our comprehension.

Anyways. What do you think we could/should do as ordinary people, to try and drag ourselves out of this downward spiral?

Do what we should have done and spend money building wind pumped hydro generators and an inter-connector to Europe. Use the money earned to pay back our debts over the next 50 years.

Cross the roads at traffic lights when they are green (or alternatively : lobby to get faster response traffic lights). Seriously the entire problem with the people of this country can be originated and captured here in a snapshot event. The lights never change quick enough so people cross wherever they can pissing drivers off and before you know it you have an entire country of Me Feiners stepping on everyones toes and ****ing the place up for everyone else.

Public service unreliablilty leads to mistrust leads to intrusion leads to ..... leads a ****ed up country. It's like Broken Window Theory meets the Butterfly Effect, except the problem in this particular spot of the world is traffic lights. Look at Germany. Lights change quickly for pedestrians. Result : Model country (mostly).

There is a massive resistance to wind energy here for some reason. County Councils hate them & have refused or put on the long finger literally hundreds of planning applications for wind farms around the country.

The fact that so few are actually built means that the cost of importing turbines is still really high as there are no economies of scale involved.

And all because some people find them unsightly. Twats. I think they look really cool.

i 'think' the arklow wind bank got the go ahead- it will be the worlds biggest if/when completed

The fact they're harmless, while the mobile phone masts people don't seem to object as strongly to despite their potential health risks, makes the whole thing even more baffling.

There may be an alternative to the massive wind turbines we have today. The energy is harnessed from 'kites'!

There is a massive difference in wind speeds at higher elevations. Building steel structures to these heights is very costly, but string is cheaper (not really string).

back for my degree I invented a funny new kind of wind turbine and some company whose name eludes me asked me for it so they could drop it off a bridge and see if it worked well underwater.
but they refused to pay for it or hire me, so we never found out if it would have worked
