    It's a computer game,
you move your whole body rather than just your thumbs so its no shock that you'll burn more energy compare to playing Mario.

But you aren't going to get fit playing this. The movements are far too sutle, low intensity.
Soem of the games might be hard to do, that's down to poor balance, co-ordination but mostly timing. You'll get better, but that's mostly down to learning how to paly them better, improved timing.

By all means play it, enjot it. Have fun. But remember its a game and not a piece of excercise equipment.

I know one or two guys researching this at the minute. While it is a bit of exercise and some is better than none, it doesnt get people to work at a high enough intensity to elicit any real fitness changes.
This is especially true of kids, they have a high threshold that needs to be reached to have any real benefits, these games just dont reach it.

I started off using the Wii Fit Christmas 12 months ago (lovely Xmas pressie from my fella!) as I was a total couch potato who had a paralysing fear of exercise. Have to say as a start off point for someone who is extremely unfit - it's a nice warm up. Like I tried to burn off a full chocolate bar on my first go and was so stiff the next few days!! I kept going with it for 2 months but it got quite easy I have to say as I joined a class at the gym too which was far more intense. So I progressed onto the EA Sports Active - More Workouts for the Wii which uses the Wii Fit Balance Board and which also acts as your personal trainer and commits you to a plan of working out at least 4 times a week. There's 3 different levels and it uses a resistance band for all the strength exercises. This gets quite tough as you work through the levels and I have to say I found it really really good. Definitely started to notice a difference once I was halfway through the medium level (each level is 6 weeks long), and the intensity definitely increases as you progress.

I then progressed onto a tough workout DVD because I couldn't afford a gym membership, but found I had built up a pretty good level of strength/fitness with the EA Sports Active. If you're running/cycling already, you could use this game as an additional resistance based training. I hope this helps :):)

    Watch your knees!!

Especially if you're doing stuff on and off the board, you need support, I never had knee problems til we got Wiifit and I had surgery 2 weeks ago. All down to Wiifit & Wiifit plus.

i got dance central on the xbox kinect and i love it, good work out but i wouldnt use it to replace anything i already do, but it def helps, work up a good sweat when youre playing on medium/hard

also go ea active 2 but waiting tilll i get bored of dance central first cause you'd be too knackered after one to do the other

What about the muscle workout section...plank, squats, etc...would that not be beneficiary? Could you tone up using the wii alone, obviouisly doing your own cardio?

My sister was about 2 or 3 stone (can't remember exactly) overweight and a pure couch potato. She started WII fit and noticed the weight falling off, she then started watching her diet a bit and now she's back to being thin.
So this definitely works for people who don't usually get much exercise and the interaction keeps them interested.
The wife bought the wii fit with the full intention of using it but hasn't touched it since. Luckily she doesn't need to lose weight, it'd be more like a bit of light cardio of which she currently gets none, she's like a guy in that respect, bought the nike+ trainers, gizmo and lycra ****e, then hit the road 2 times and gave up.

The dance thing for the xbox looks great, pity we only have a ps3 and wii in our house. Might look into getting a second hand one soon. The kids would love it, might get the wife off her arse too ^ ^.

  • Wii Fit is a "gateway drug" for real exercise.

People discover that it's actually quite enjoyable to not sit around all the time, and it prompts them to do more in their life. It's not that Wii Fit is a great exercise (which it isn't), but it makes people think a bit more and that's to be commended imo.

Story above about upping to resistance band work etc is a perfect example of this. Keep up the good work!
