.....after The Royal Emirates Group has completed their takeover of the club.

Disgusting IMO. This is a step too far and money's really ruining football.

I hope the whole game implodes ASAP.

If true that is utterly disgusting

Surely the Spanish Football Federation have to intefere.

I hope, and almost sure, there is a clause in the rulebook that a person can't rename a top flight team just like that.

Op have you got a link for this? Surely they won't let this happen

Boot them out of the league if they try it.

It's a disgrace, hopefully their fans won't allow it to happen.

I honestly can't see this happening, even the utterly corrupt and incompetent morons at FIFA & UEFA can see that moves like this will never be in the best interest of the game.

    What!!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,721 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

Weren't Zaragoza one of the clubs at the bottom who hadn't paid their players for weeks? And relegation would see the end of the club and so were inviting take-overs...

Do the fans have much option..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭V9

Well if thats allowed to happen, that is an absolute disgrace.

First things first, this is only a suggestion. A long way to go.

But the precedent is there. Red Bull Saltzburg. MK Dons. Not a lot the Spanish Federation can do if the owners chose to rename a team other than strip them of their honours.

I'll believe it when I see it. Speculating it and doing it are 2 different things. I'd be 99% certain this won't happen.

I assume any name change by RZ or any other club have to vetted by the Spanish federation.

If it's ok with them it's none of UEFA or FIFA's business so long as any name change doesn't clash with UEFA sponsorship, if so they play in UEFA competiton under another name.

    I doubt it'll happen....

It'd be a disgrace if it did go through but i doubt the fans would take such a move lightly even if they are in financial trouble.

Not sure why anyones surprised. NFL-style franchises were always the next step for the direction soccer has taken. Expect many more in the years to come.

Real Zaragoza made me cry when I was 11 years old, i fcukin hate that team to this day. Hope they get crash and burn

Well at least they kept the name of the city or region they are from. Dubai is nowhere near Zaragoza.

Explain to me how they are similar because I don't see it.

Of course, the proud and historic Spanish city of Dubai?

Even the 'Team' grates with me. Anglicising on top of it all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭UpTheSlashers

Why not "Equipo Dubai"? Or "Club Dubai"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,288 ✭✭✭ynwa_17

If the below is to be believed, then the OP has got his lines crossed. Not to say its right or anything though. http://www.ctpost.com/sports/article/Topflight-Spanish-club-bought-by-Dubai-group-1343453.php
The team's name will remain unchanged but Team Dubai would be added to the jerseys, stadium and other merchandise, Rafiq said.

Lot of people saying its Getafe.

Marca are saying it's Getafe and will be officially announced tomorrow.

    http://www.marca.com/2011/04/20/futbol/equipos/getafe/1303302845.html#comentarios

It seems the team will be called Getafe Team Dubai. I guess this is better than having a team with an actual history like Zaragoza have their name changed but it's still a joke.

I also can't really see Getafe progressing too far though as they simply don't have the fanbase. I'm not sure on this but I think most of their fans have Getafe as a second team behind Atleti or Madrid and even with money behind it the team will struggle to grow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 395 ✭✭AntoSRFC

Not suprising only thing that is shocking is how bad the name is. No worse than what happened to SV Austria Salzburg or Wimbledon F.C. although saying that I have developed a soft spot for Red Bull Salzburg:D
The report above was the first time ive seen Getafe mentioned good luck to the fans in any case.
    NO AL CALCIO MODERNO!!!

Without being smart, if you're happy at the thought of dubious mega-wealthy charachters buying your club so you can spalsh the cash for top players, you're tacitly accepting a process that starts with your manager being pussywhipped from the boardroom and ultimately ends up with crap like this even if it may not be true in this instance.

Malaga are one of the richest clubs, if you count the owners wealth instead of the clubs, same as City. They spent a fortune in January trying to stay up. If they do stay up they're expected to go mad this summer.

The precident is there as has already been pointed out, tbh i am not sure they could be stopped if its what they wanted to do and they owned the club. The would own the naming rights surely?

According to Sky Sports News, Getafe were bought by that Emirates group. Were Zaragoza also bought or has the article quoted in the first post made a mistake?

They were looking at both but settled on Getafe

think the thread title needs a change, Getafe are the Spanish Man City it may seem and no longer just Getafe.... apparently they have tapped up Messi & Ronaldo already and have convinced hiddink not to go to Chelsea.... :pac:

Some teams have stupid names - I remember Cork City played a team called Ekranas. Its Lithuanian for Light bulb I think.

Red Bull Salburg are another team who fell victim to the lure of the bling. Or maybe they had to to save themselves.

NS, Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven are company teams and were set up in that way. Entirely different to the Red Bull Salzburg and potentially Team Dubai scenario
